New Kellar Radio Talent Institute Begins Today

6-2-14

24 aspiring young broadcasters will start to learn the trade today on the campus of Appalachian State University in Boone, NC. The Kellar Radio Talent Institute begins with opening comments from NCAB President Steve Hammel who is the VP/GM of WRAL-TV in Raleigh. Forty-five broadcast professionals are contributing to the ten-day Institute this year, which was started by Dan Vallie who's pictured here with a student.

The mission of the National Radio Talent System is to create the radio talent farm system (a talent incubator) by placing a Radio Talent Institute on a college campus in every region or state in America so students can attend in their home state, and so radio stations can recruit from their own region of the country, or nationally. Dan Vallie, Director of the Kellar Radio Talent Institute, and Founder of the National Radio Talent System, said, ?This all began as the answer to the question, ?where is the next generation of talent coming from? and the often stated comment that we need a radio talent farm system for our industry. We now have exactly that as we secure sponsorships from broadcasters and identify universities to create a Radio Talent Institute in each state. It?s exciting to watch and, admittedly, somewhat emotional at times to see students with the talent and passion to succeed in our business, complete the Institute and begin a career, fulfilling our need for young talent and the Radio Talent Institutes being the campus-to-career connection the students need. It?s impressive and heart-warming to see so many broadcasters committing both time and sponsorship to make this happen?.

This year the Institute includes the Radio Marketing Professional Certification course from the RAB, with those sessions being taught by Gary Weiss, Regional VP, Radio One, Raleigh and Charlotte; Mac ?Edwards? McTindal, VP/Market Manager and Pam Patton, AE ,of the Beasley Broadcast Group, Fayetteville; Dick Harlow, VP/Market Manager, Dick Broadcasting, Greensboro/Winston-Salem; Larry Weiss, Market Manager, Digity Media, Greenville/New Bern/Jacksonville, NC and Mike Hartel, VP/GM of the L&L Broadcasting stations in Columbia, SC.

Kellar Institute Begins Today

7-8-13

Twenty-two young broadcasters will be taught by some of the best broadcast professionals in the business at this year?s Kellar Radio Talent Institute that begins today on the campus of Appalachian State University in Boone, NC. Thirty eight radio professionals are teaching the sessions this year, including CBS Radio President Dan Mason, Beasley CEO George Beasley and Salem Chairman Stu Epperson.

Director of the Kellar Radio Talent Institute Dan Vallie (pictured) says, ?We are developing the next generation of broadcasters. The students come with enthusiasm and passion for the business, and it?s very impressive how industry professionals sacrifice their time to come to the campus to teach sessions and give back to the industry.?

Every session is on the Appalachian State University campus, except for one day in Charlotte where sports broadcasting sessions are led by Mick Mixon, Play-by-Play Announcer of the NFL Carolina Panthers at Bank of America Stadium; Doug Rice of Performance Racing Network at the Charlotte Motor speedway; and Scott Lauer of the NBA Charlotte Bobcats at Time Warner Arena. The Kellar Radio Talent Institute last for ten days.

The Kellar Radio Talent Institute is named for former broadcaster Art Kellar, who funded the Institute. Art founded EZ Communications in 1970, merged with American Radio Systems in the 90?s and later sold to CBS. The Howard Outrage Begins

12-16-2011

Parents Television Council President Tim Winter was quick to criticize the new NBC/Stern relationship, saying the network has lost its way. ?In an act of desperation for a flailing network, NBC has hired Howard Stern ? a performer who is synonymous with shock, profanity and obscenity ? as a judge on a prime-time talent competition. Not coincidentally, in just over three weeks the network will be standing before the United States Supreme Court arguing for the right to use the F-word at any time of the day, even in front of children. The once-proud broadcast network has made it clear it holds no concern whatsoever for children and families. It also risks losing millions in advertising dollars. Whatever principles NBC had in the past, when the network was successful, have clearly gone out the window.?

(12/16/2011 7:36:24 AM)
Suddenly, the image of Howard Stern critiquing the likes of a Jackie Evancho came to mind. Is it really that hard to find someone with class instead of reaching for the lowest common social denominator? It sure explains a lot about how NBC has gotten to where it is today. Very sad.
(12/16/2011 7:12:45 AM)

While I don't often side with - or even agree with the PTC and its tactics, I have to echo their sentiment concerning Howard Stern in a Prime Time network slot.

He may be intelligent, he may be 'heritage' to radio, and he may draw curious viewers, but his reputation as a sleaze bag is well earned, and I believe NBC just made another costly error.
