Bridge: Streaming Research for Radio Slow

3-27-2015

Dave Van Dyke points out in his latest blog posting on Bridge, that most terrestrial broadcasters are gun-shy when it comes gleaning research from streaming data. Van Dyke says that much of it has to do with programmers' comfort with the research tools they have been using for years: telephone call-out, auditorium music testing and newer platforms such as Shazam and M-Score.

Van Dyke points out that streaming songs such as Meghan Trainor song Dear Future Husband and Luke Bryan's Games are huge on the streaming charts, but both are charting low on radio. Guns n Roses' Sweet Child of Mine and Never Gonna Give You Up by Rick Astley continue to rank in the top 20 most-streamed songs by their on-demand audience, but are radio programmers using this data for rotations and adds? Well, there is that whole Rick Roll thing.

Van Dyke notes, "A better indicator than CD sales or even digital downloads, on-demand streaming gets to the root of quantifying song appeal. If a music listener invests time in selecting and listening to songs on-demand, there is legitimate cause to believe they want to hear it." Van Dyke says that if it is indeed radio's job to reflect the taste of the listener, it's paramount to "study the consumption of your listeners through on-demand streaming."

No Deal in Bubba Attorney Case

3-26-15

Remember when Bubba The Love Sponge and Todd Schnitt were in court over name-calling? At the time Bubba's attorney's were accused of setting up Schnitt's attorney, Phil Campbell, for a DUI charge when a paralegal fed him drinks at a local bar and Campbell got into his car and drove. A judge has rejected a plea deal that would have kept three attorneys -- Stephen Diaco, Robert Adams and Adam Filthaut -- from going to court for the setup case. Channel 10 in Tampa reports the judge said the deal the attorneys sought was unacceptable and not harsh enough.

(3/27/2015 9:27:56 AM)
I'm sorry, I don't care WHO bought the drinks. If Captain Stupid drank the drinks and jumped into his car, without the purchaser holding a gun to his head, it's a legit DUI! Would it have been different if he'd bought the drinks himself? Absolutely not. Captain Stupid had plenty of options. From not accept the drinks in the first place to calling a cab because he chose to drink them.

Little Big Town Song Frightens PD's

3-26-15

Last month the popular country band Little Big Town played its brand new song called Girl Crush to hundreds of Program Director's at the Ryman in downtown Nashville. The PD's seemed to love the song, giving the group quite a roaring ovation. Apparently they don't love the song enough to play it anymore on their radio stations, despite the fact fans all over the country are buying it, due to the incorrect assumption the song promotes the gay agenda. Now, the fact that country radio isn't playing Girl Crush, or stations are pulling it after receiving complaints, country radio is being criticized in newspaper articles all over the country, including this piece in The Washington Post. The Post does concede Country Radio is still the genre's most powerful platform.

The Post says there?s a deep chasm between what?s popular on country radio and what fans are buying. ?Girl Crush? is 4th on iTunes, but 33rd in radio rankings. "And while country music is seen as more progressive now ? with explicit lyrics about sex and casual marijuana use ? significant portions of the traditional audience will not tolerate a song that they even wrongly assume is about a same-sex relationship."

The paper also cited syndicate host Bobby Bones who interviewed the band and asked them if it was frustrating that their song, which is one of the top 10 sellers, is not being played on radio because PD's are afraid of it, thinking it?s a "lesbian song"? Band member Karen Fairchild said., ?Just the fact that we?re still discussing that, number one, there?s so many problems with that whole issue. Fairchild told the Post ?It?s a genius lyric, such a beautifully written song about jealousy. It was like, ?Why would we not cut this?" Fairchild says the song is about a girl saying, you know, ?Why do you love her and not me???

(3/27/2015 9:21:44 AM)
Heard the song a lot last week, across 4 states of road trip. I can understand the confusion from those who aren't listening to the lyrics carefully, and the intent behind them. I still found the whole song kind of creepy and weird - and my wife agreed when I asked what she thought of it. Beautifully sung, but just ... meh.

How To Get A 40 Share

3-26-2015

Wheeler Broadcasting's WVBE in Roanoke, VA, is an incredibly successful radio station. In some demos, the Vibe simulcast attracts 30 and 40 shares. How often do you see that anymore? Operations Manager Brett Sharp has been in radio for 30 years, 15 with Wheeler, and he says he's never seen a more dominant radio station ? and it's all about involvement. "As cliched as this may sound," he says, "we are big in heart and big on trying to deliver the absolute best, always. Our listeners deserve it. The Vibe is truly a great radio station, in every aspect. I wish I could take credit, but that should go to Leonard and Kianna."

Sharp is referring to Wheeler Broadcasting President and GM Leonard Wheeler and Vibe PD Kianna Wade. Wheeler Broadcasting purchased WXLK in Roanoke and WLYK in Lynchburg back in 1997; the stations were simulcasting WXLK's CHR format at the time. But WXLK, a class C FM, covered both Roanoke and Lynchburg, and Wheeler (pictured left) says the simulcast on WLYK wasn't offering a great deal in the way of extended coverage.

"I was very desirous to take the WLYK signal in a direction to serve the African American population," he says. "The Lynchburg area is approximately 18 percent African American. While the market had some Urban-directed stations in the past, it seemed no one on the FM side in the recent past, and with some wherewithal, really committed for the long term to making a play at a station targeting African Americans 100 percent. There was a Rhythmic CHR in the market at the time, but I felt there was an opportunity in serving African-American adults." So the company took WLYK to Urban AC in 2000 and became the Vibe, with new call letters WVBE.

A few years later, Wheeler flipped one of its Roanoke AMs from Country to simulcast WVBE, hoping to penetrate the Roanoke market. Even on the AM dial, it did well. Then the Vibe simulcast was extended even further, to an FM signal in a county adjacent to Roanoke. Today the Vibe is also simulcast on an HD2 signal for WXLK and on a translator in Roanoke at 97.3.

Wheeler says it takes several pieces to cover the area, so the company is working with the resources and assets it has to serve the community. And that service is second to none, as evidenced by the Vibe's amazing 40 share with African Americans. Wheeler reports that the station is always above a 30 share, but generally around the 40-share range.

As he notes, "We are clearly the go-to station for African Americans in our market. Beyond programming music and entertainment to appeal to our target market, we can also speak to issues that are more pronounced in the African American community."

Kianna Wade (pictured right), a onetime pharmaceutical rep, is WVBE's PD. After falling in love with station and what it stood for, she joined the staff as a part-time jock in 2006. In 2007, she was promoted to WVBE promotions director and took over middays. And, before moving up to PD in 2012, she also carried a list.

"The Vibe does so much more than provide music and entertainment for our listeners," Wade says. "Black radio has historically been a powerful resource to the African-American community. It is our honor that the Vibe is an integral part of the community. We are nothing without the people we serve. Each of us at the station takes pride and value in serving our community. Whenever possible WVBE tries to align itself with nonprofit organizations and agencies striving to improve and empower the community. We do our best to help assist with events and projects, via lending on-air time as media sponsors, aid in planning community events, or volunteering as MCs."

Wade goes on, "We also recognize that we are in the position to help shape the entertainment culture in our market. We therefore take the time and investment to create our own station events for our listeners, ranging from after-work social events and musical concerts to family-focused activities like health fairs to Easter egg hunts."

It's the community involvement, culture shaping, and serving others that Wheeler says gives him such great satisfaction as an owner. "No offense to other industries," he says, "but I can't imagine selling copiers would be this interesting and fun. Beyond the bottom line, there is great satisfaction in serving others, and also in winning. Each of our stations serves a somewhat different target, but we want to win that target and be number one in it. We have no station as dominant in a target demographic as WVBE is. It is also circular ? the more you serve your audience well, the more audience you build, and the more audience you build, then, indeed, the better you can serve others and be of impact in their lives. Radio stations and the emotional connection they build with an audience are a great conduit."

And Wheeler isn't afraid to make the commitment needed to win in a corporate dominated radio world: "We were willing to commit to the resources and investment to serve a market that we felt was underserved, plus stay the course even through some unprofitable years to build a franchise and strength in the market. I'd like to believe we are geniuses, but realistically, our position doesn't have a lot of competition on the over-the-air radio front. Along the way we had competition from a Rhythmic CHR for some years ? they now are pop CHR. We did have an Urban/ Urban AC competitor in Lynchburg in the recent past, but they didn?t stay in the format past two years. We deserve some credit for being strong enough in our position that a new competitor didn't make quick inroads."

For the past seven years, the Vibe team has planned the Henry Street Festival. It's the largest African-American festival in Southwest Virginia, and the major fundraiser for the Harrison Museum of African American Culture. The Vibe serves as the event's promotional powerhouse, as well as lining up major national recording artists to perform at the festival.

Wade says the festival takes months to plan, but that it's a great joy to unite several organizations working for the same cause: to educate and entertain the people of Southwestern and Central Virginia. She says, "Watching the thousands of people enjoying themselves the day of the festival is so rewarding, and well worth the investment of time and energy."

Additionally, for the past six years, the Vibe has partnered with the National Bone Marrow Registry and has registered hundreds of people of color to be donors, spearheading and coordinating drives throughout the community. "It's not an easy event to pull off," Wade says. "You need to motivate someone to agree to go through a swab of their mouth and do about a 10-minute or more paperwork process. And of course, in the end, be willing to be a donor if they are a match with someone in the future." Talk about working hard to improve your community!

Wheeler says the chances of a minority individual finding a match for a bone marrow transplant are very low, given that African Americans and other minorities make up a very low percentage of pre-screened donors on national registries. "Vibe has worked to improve this," he says. "There are a number of diseases that are more prevalent in the African-American community, yet also the African-American community indexes lower on having continuity of health care and preemptive health screenings. Vibe produces a Community Health Fair each year in Roanoke and Lynchburg that involves the availability of some health screenings."

With as much as the Vibe team does to serve the community, it's no wonder that translates into massive shares of the audience. The Vibe on-air team is incredibly dedicated, always willing to lend a helping hand and to step in whenever possible. Their commitment to radio speaks volumes, from traveling an hour's distance to be on air to freely giving their time at community events. Each of them gladly serves the community, working with school kids and training young talent to be future stars. And that's what live, local ? and successful ? radio is all about.

Rosin: Podcasting Maturity & Growth

The most high profile of podcasts is undoubtedly the Serial podcast, and data posted to Edison Research President Larry Rosin's blog shows  the podcasting arena is maturing, but still has a lot of room for growth. The Infinite Dial notes that only 10 percent of the population has heard of Serial, and just under 30 percent of those who were aware of Serial, have listened to a podcast in the last week. It's a good news/bad news story. Only 10 percent of the population has heard of the most successful podcast, on the other hand, 10 percent of the population is aware of just one podcast.

Apple's Plan To Dominate Streaming

3-25-2015

The New York Times has released an expanded expose of the plans Apple has for its much-talked-about upcoming streaming venture. The Times repots that Apple is not only working on the Beats streaming service with engineers from Cupertino and Beats, but plans to introduce iTunes Radio, tailored to listeners in regional markets. Nine Inch Nails' Trent Reznor has been tapped to redesign the music app and the rumored $8 price point has hit a roadblock with labels.

While Apple is still the biggest player in the music business, the fact that they were "late to the party" with streaming was used as leverage by labels to keep Apple from offering the service at $2 under what Spotify, Rhapsody, and Rdio price their streaming products. The Times does report that there will be no free-tier for Apple and speculates that the hiring of former BBC talent Zane Lowe, reinforces the regional aspect of iTunes streaming. Inside The Mind Of A Great Programmer

3-25-15

Like most young kids who fall in love with radio, Jay Stevens wanted to be a DJ, just a guy on the radio. He had no real desire to be a programmer. His radio career began while attending the State University College at Brockport in Upstate New York, where he worked at stations in Rochester ? and was fired for the first time. Welcome to the business, kid. He then moved on to Indianapolis as a music director, and then to Lansing where he landed his first PD job and came to the realization he really wanted to program stations and lead and teach others. He returned to Rochester to program WBBF and WMJQ before taking a job as PD at WQUE in New Orleans. Then it was on to Y95 in Phoenix. All that led Stevens to the nation?s capital, where he would spend two decades as VP of programming for WPGC.

AT WPGC Stevens helped take a good station and make it great. He loves radio today as much as he did when he was a little kid and his parents would take him to the mall so he could watch live broadcasts from a local radio station. "I guess I'm good at it because I'm so passionate about it and I love it so much," he says. "I can't get enough of it. The famous saying is, 'If you chase your passion, you will never work a day in your life.' So maybe that's it. I just love what I do."

Today, as senior vice president of programming at Radio One ? a job he's held since 2007 ? Stevens is sharing that passion and spreading his programming philosophy throughout the 60 Radio One stations across the country. We picked his brain about becoming a programmer, whether radio is fun anymore, redlining the studio, whether live and local matters, and much more, including the latest format success to hit radio, BOOM. BOOM is a Classic Hip-Hop format started by Stevens and the Radio One team that is now being copied by several of radio's bigger companies.

RI: When you became a PD, did you know right away you wanted to manage?
Stevens: Oh, yes. Absolutely. I was OK on the air, but I was probably going to be one of those midday DJs who, every two years, has to pack up a U-Haul and go to another town. I thought there was a little bit more stability, where I could control my own destiny, as the program director. I had a lot of good ideas. There was a period of time where I was on the air as a PD, and then I went from being on the air to being off the air and a PD in management. I'm not going to lie: To this day, I miss being on the radio. That was fun. That's where you get to be creative, and the expressive side comes out. I do miss that, but I have never looked back. Never.

RI: Today you're one of the most respected programmers in the industry. Why is that?
Stevens
: (Laughs) I'm just sitting here doing my thing. I love radio. I'm passionate about what I do. I live it 24/7. This isn't a job for me, it's my life. If you ask my wife or my family, this is what I do all the time. I'm listening to the radio on an app somewhere, I'm on vacation and I'm sitting on the beach with an app on my mobile device, listening to one of my radio stations. I guess maybe I am good at it because I am so passionate about it and I love it so much. I can't get enough of it. The famous saying is "If you chase your passion, you will never work a day in your life." Maybe that's it. I don't know. There's nobody you will meet in this business who is more "all in" than me, 24 hours a day. I cannot shut it off. I sometimes wish I could have an on/off switch on my brain to shut it off. I can't.

RI: As a senior VP, have you ever called into a studio if you heard something you didn?t like?
Stevens:
(More laughter) You mean on a hotline? Maybe now I would text them, absolutely. Now I won't go as granular as calling one of our DJs on the air, because if in my role, I call one of the DJs, they are ruined. It's bad enough if the program director calls, but if the senior VP of programming calls them on the air, they are going to be ruined. I would work through the PD. But there is no doubt, I will alert the PD if I hear something, immediately. Absolutely.

RI: What is the secret to programming a great radio station? not only what comes out of the speakers, but getting the talent to execute it in the way the company plans?
Stevens:
I think that is through proper coaching. Our talent have room to maneuver within our formats, as they should. Their job is to be creating. They need to be capturing the moment. In other words, if something serious happens, they stop what they're doing and they get it on the air. It could be a bad accident or one of the big freeways in town is shut down, and they stop what they're doing to talk about that. It could be something horrific happens with ISIS. It could be something positive. If something positive happens, it needs to be reflected on the air.

On our younger stations, where new music is important, on the mainstream stations, that is not only pop culture news stories, whether it is Bobbi Kristina [Brown] being found in a bathtub in Atlanta, which is horrible, but it could be a new song we found on the Internet from a mix tape from Drake that we're playing. That is all part of the urgent, compelling content that makes great radio. Back when I was on the air, the compelling content like that, you would find on the old newswire. You would hear a bell ringing outside the studio door and you would go rip it off the wire. Now we find it on social media, on the Internet, from CNN on a TV screen in our studio. What I say to our program directors and our talent is, "Each quarter-hour is a show." So if you do a four-hour program, there are 16 shows. Each quarterhour is a show within your show. So each quarter-hour, you'd better be creating compelling content, whether it's new music, a factoid about the artist, a phone call, or a contest. The pressure is on. During these quarterhours you had better be creating compelling content. It doesn't matter what format it is. It doesn't matter if you're doing Gospel or Urban AC or mainstream, it goes with any format ? creating that compelling, urgent content 24/7.

Edison: Podcast Listening Heaviest with Millennial's

3-20-2015

Podcasting's resurgence is strongest with millennial's, reports Edison Research. Close to 25 percent of users fall within the 12-24 year old demographic, 25-54 is just under 20 percent and 10 percent of the users are 55 plus. Even though podcasting skews young, the demographic spread isn't as young as podcasting's streaming cousin. Edison believes that the more balanced demographics of podcasting might be due to the promotion of podcasting on Public Radio, with an older skewing audience.
