I was speaking with a friend who works in the software design world for a leading innovator and he had some terrific words of advice that can be put to use in your organization. First and foremost: "a diverse team aligned through debate will make a better product."
How often do you truly think in those terms when you are taking a project on or you are trying to solve a problem? Many times our traditional approach is to think in terms of "the way we have always done things" with the same members of our team every time.
It's a new year and it's time to shake things up a bit. Reconsider how you build internal teams to innovate, solve problems, or execute a project.
The program director of today is the brand manager of the entire product on all platforms but don't we really need a full product team?
Start with the PD but don't be afraid to go deeper: Promotions/Marketing, Sales Manager or Sales Rep/Street Team member, Production Director, Digital Manager.
What the heck, go nuts and invite the General Manager!
Maybe even consider bringing someone into your diverse team who is from outside of our core business as an invited guest. Why not even invite your receptionist since they probably have more direct contact with your clients or listeners than anyone?
One last note from my designer friend: "Happy teams make happy designs. The converse is also true."
