NRG Omaha Launches "The KEG"

NRG Media in Omaha is retiring its Big O 101.9 brand for what it's calling a refined Adult Hits station with a mass-appeal playlist. 101.9 The KEG will now target men and women ages 25-54 with music that will remind them of their "KEG" days. That means music from  Guns N? Roses, Journey, Aerosmith, Bon Jovi, Pat Benatar, Def Leopard, and others. NRG GM Andy Ruback said, ?It?s Adult Hits without the Pop. The KEG is all about the party and all about the fun, which to us means yes to Van Halen and no to the Go-Go?s.?

Omaha Station Draws $17,000 NAL

Cochise Broadcasting, licensee of KOMJ-AM/Omaha, has received a $17,000 notice of apparent liability from the FCC's Enforcement Bureau, which says it failed to maintain and staff a main studio and make a public inspection file available. Along with the NAL, Cochise has 30 days to submit a statement saying it's established and staffed a main studio and made a public inspection file available.

This dates back to August 1, 2013, when an agent with the Enforcement Bureau's Kansas City office went to inspect KOMJ, but was unable to find the address of the main studio or contact anyone responsible; calls placed were transferred out of state and went to voicemail, and a message went unreturned. A voicemail to one of Cochise's owners also was not returned.

An FCC agent was later told that the main studio was at Journal Broadcast Group's studio for KMTV-TV/Omaha, but a Journal receptionist said that wasn't the case. A manager later said some files might be there "but that he would have to research the matter."

This all brought a notice of violation to Cochise over failure to maintain a studio and public inspection file. Cochise responded by reiterating that its files were at Journal's studios. After letters of inquiry went out to Cochise and Journal attempting to clarify matters, Journal said that Cochise pays a monthly fee to house its files at KMTV's main studio, but that there is no Cochise equipment or staff at the site. The bureau doesn't think that's sufficient, and Cochise now has 30 days to pay the forfeiture or submit a request for a cancellation or reduction.

Vowinkle New Journal GSM In Omaha

Scott Vowinkle has joined the Journal Broadcast Group-Omaha Operations as General Sales Manager. Vowinkle has served as vice president of business development for the Radio Advertising Bureau and as vice president and general manager for the Hispanic Broadcasting Corporation. Most recently, he was regional sales director for ApartmentGuide.com.

In Omaha, Journal Broadcast Group also owns Star 104.5 KSRZ-FM and Channel 94.1 FM KQCH-FM, as well as CBS-affiliate KMTV. Vowinkle will be sharing management responsibilities for Journal Broadcast Group?s Omaha radio cluster with General Sales Manager Kris Chistiansen, devoting his primary focus to leading the sales efforts of Z-92 (KEZO-FM), CD105.9 (KKCD-FM), and AM-590 ESPN (KXSP-AM).

The Zone In Omaha Goes All Local

With the addition of "The Nick Bahe Show," NRG Media's sports station "1620 The Zone" is now all live and local. Bahe replaces The Jim Rome Show from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. GM Andy Ruback says, ?We really believe in the importance of providing Omaha listeners with comprehensive local programming content that is dedicated to our area?s most relevant sports franchises and the people making headlines."

Bahe, a former Creighton University basketball standout, is a graduate of Southeast High School in Lincoln where he earned multiple athletic awards as the 2003 Gatorade Nebraska Player of the Year, was quarterback on the All-State Football Team, and was nominated to the McDonald?s All-America team. Although he was always a standout athlete, he said the opportunity to return to broadcasting is his true passion.

Bahe most recently was an on-air personality at a radio station in Lincoln, Nebraska, and prior to that was co-host during mornings on 1620 The Zone. He said, ?Returning to 1620 The Zone is an exciting opportunity to talk with true Omaha and Nebraska sports fans who care as passionately as I about the local sports scene. Kohls Joins NRG Omaha

NRG is bringing in Ken Kohls to program "The Big O 101.9-FM" (Adult Hits) The veteran broadcaster joins the station with three decades of radio programming experience and 20 years of radio management experience. Kohls will also take the Noon to 4PM shift on the station.
