What Will Piolin Affiliates Do?

7-22-13

Here's one suggestion. GLR Networks was quick to send out a release regarding Ren?n Almend?rez Coello and his morning show called ?El Cucuy de la Ma?ana." A GLR release says, ?El Cucuy de la Ma?ana? currently airs on W Radio 690am Los Angeles (XEWW) Monday-Friday, 5am-10am PST. However, GLR plans on national syndication of the show within the following weeks." GLR says Coello  once had an estimated audience of about 3 million daily listeners.

The Spanish-language program, formatted to specifically target Mexican Regional stations, brings the Hispanic community daily news, interviews, humor, and entertainment.  For details contact Camille Rodriguez at 305.644.6641, ext. 173 or crodriguez@glrnetworks.com.

How convenient... A show that died in radio over 10 years ago, when it moved to KLAX (after having all of the support it needed on KSCA), now offering itself as a solution. I am sure that Piolín will be back. I recommend to all affiliates to not panic just yet. Let the dust settle and look at all AM show options. Remember, Piolín could wake up tomorrow with another network near you.

Should DG Affiliates Be Concened?

11-15-2012

Immediately following the Dial Global SEC filings we wanted to get a feel for what that meant to affiliates and customers of the company. We reached out to Dial Global co-CEO Spencer Brown. Brown told Radio Ink, "It was a tough quarter and as a result we need to rework our lender agreements. We are in the midst of doing so but it is going to take a little time. We continue to operate the business and service our clients consistent with past practices. Anyone who has a concern should call me directly."

Dial Global distributes, produces, and/or syndicates programming and services to more than 8,500 radio stations nationwide. The company produces and/or distribute over 200 news, sports, music, talk and entertainment radio programs, services and digital applications, as well as audio content from live events, turn-key music formats (the 24/7 Radio Formats), prep services, jingles and imaging.

(AUDIO) NBC Already Has 100 Affiliates

8-23-2012

As we continue to look at the upcoming sports talk radio battle gearing up to begin after Labor Day, we focus today on the NBC Sports Network. If all goes according to plan, both NBC and CBS will be launching their update products September 4th. CBS will go into 24 hour mode early in 2013, NBC later that year. NBC - with help from Dial Global - says it already has 100 affiliate stations ready to take the udpate product, which is pretty good being neither company owns any radio stations. When CBS launches it will not only have its own signals to cherry pick from, with Cumulus as a partner, there will be hundreds more to choose from.

Rob Simmelkjaer is the NBC Sports Group Senior Vice President, NBC Sports Ventures. He's also a former top ESPN executive. He'll be part of our expanded sports talk coverage coming up in the September issue of Radio Ink magazine. Simmelkjaer says morning drive and afternoon drive shows are not a top priority for the NBC sports network because those positions are occupied by strong programming at the local level and are harder to sell. In this short preview of our interview Simmelkjaer talks to Radio Ink about getting off the ground with so many affiliates and what those affiliates can expect to get from the NBC product. Here's our interview preview.

TRN's News Programming Now Over 320 Affiliates

7-17-2012

America?s Radio News Network and America?s Morning News offers stations 15 hours of syndicated long-form news programming daily and is now on over 320 affiliated stations taking one or more of the five, three-hour news programs. Over 18 stations recently added the news programming including: WTDA/WMNI in Columbus, KBSZ in Phoenix, WOWW in Memphis, WINK in Ft. Myers/Naples and WYGC in Gainesville.

Lonnie Treadaway General Manager of WOWW AM, Memphis, TN says, ?We needed a compelling format and there was just too much talk and sports already, so going all news with TRN made perfect sense. Now, we can offer a unique format in the great market of Memphis.?

Hal Fish, General Manager of WTDY FM/WMNI AM, Columbus, OH says, ?Love the all news presentation from TRN ? and it works perfectly in being able to blend in a strong local news presence together with what is going on nationally. I think going all news gives us a real edge in Columbus.?

John Starr, General Manager of WYGC FM, Gainesville, FL ?I'm real impressed with the way the team at America's Morning News and America's Radio News presents the news. As a sports and news station, we really love the energy. And the listeners have responded quite well to the addition of morning and afternoon news blocks.?

(AUDIO) Rush Morning Update. Now The Affiliates.

3-6-2012

9 Advertisers and 2 Affiliates have now decided end their relationship with Rush Limbaugh. Yesterday AOL and Tax Resolution Services pulled their advertising from the program. AOL posted the following statement on Facebook. "At AOL one of our core values is that we act with integrity. We have monitored the unfolding events and have determined that Mr. Limbaugh?s comments are not in line with our values. As a result we have made the decision to suspend advertising on The Rush Limbaugh Radio show." Also, KPUA-AM in Helo, Hawaii has decided after being an affiliate for 15 years, it was time to pull Rush from the station lineup. We spoke to KPUA General Manager Chris Leonard last night and you can listen to that interview here.

Listen to our interview with Chris Leonard HERE

Leonard said ?We have always encouraged spirited discussion about national and local issues on KPUA and from time to time those discussions may be deemed by some to be objectionable.  We are strong believers in the first amendment and have recognized Mr. Limbaugh's right to express opinions that often times differ from our own, but it has never been our goal to allow our station to be used for personal attacks and intolerance. The most recent incident has crossed a line of decency and a standard that we expect of programming on KPUA whether it is locally produced or a syndicated program like the Rush Limbaugh show."

"While much of the national debate regarding this issue is now being framed in political terms, the decision for us is one of decency and responsibility.  Regardless of one's political views on the issue being discussed, we feel the delivery was degrading and the continued comments over several days to be egregious.  As a result, we are discontinuing the Rush Limbaugh program on KPUA effective immediately.?

The Huffington Post is also reporting that WBEC-AM has also canceled the program but we have been unable to reach anyone at the station to confirm. We did find this statement online

Rush Affiliates Hearing From Listeners Via Facebook

3-3-2012

KFBK is the flagship station for Rush Limbaugh, its pretty much where it all began for the syndicated talker. If you take a quick glance at the KFBK Facebook page, listeners are letting the station know they're not happy with what Rush said about Sandra Fluke. One listener posted, "after 40 years of listening to KFBK, I've had enough! In spite of the squeaky clean image that KFBK has tried to personify through its local on-air personalities, maintaining ties with the Rush Limbaugh program is more than enough to erase every good thing KFBK has done and make me realize the truth about it's hypocrisy." And, there are more...

Of course there is no way for us to authenticate if these people are actual listeners of KFBK or Rush haters from around the country who have found a prime  outlet to pile on. Here's another piece of feedback from the KFBK Facebook page: "While I support freedom of speech, I will not support any person or company who attacks anyone, any race, in hateful abusive ways. I will not spend my dollars on companies who advertise, and thereby show their support, to a person or program that advocates such behavior. I will not listen to radio stations who by airing programs such as Rush Limbaughs, show their support of his behavior."

SEE TO THE KFBK FACEBOOK PAGE:
http://www.facebook.com/pages/WBAP/106094559430626?ref=ts&sk=info#!/1530kfbk

And how about KFI-AM in Los Angeles? Still feeling the heat from the John & Ken rant about Whitney Houston they are now dealing with fan feedback about Rush on their Facebook page.

In New York (WABC) and Chicago (WLS) it appeared fans were standing up for Rush more than fans were at the California stations.

(3/5/2012 6:42:06 AM)
Rush was correct in his choice of words. Fluke defined herself in her testimony: promiscuous woman, For which, the correct noun is: slut. But when Rush suddenly became more interested in the MONEY than the truth, I must now join with the slut and her democratic friends. I will no longer listen to Rush. Apparently, the truth is not worth standing up for. This country, in this time of unrest needs a real leader. One who can take the hard stand that is going to be needed to keep our Union and our

(LEGAL) Are Affiliates at Any Legal Risk?

3-4-2012

With over 500 affiliates carrying the Rush Limbaugh program and Social Media offering many of those affiliates instant feedback on how they feel about what Rush said last week, we wondered what would happen if Sandra Fluke decided she wanted to take this issue into the court system. Would stations have to worry about any liability? We took that question to broadcast attorney John Garziglia this past weekend and here's what he had to say.

While it is a near universal truth that anyone can sue for just about anything, Sandra Fluke?s remedies against Rush Limbaugh almost certainly do not lie in a lawsuit.  It is highly unlikely that any lawsuit, let alone a successful one, will be brought against Rush Limbaugh and his affiliated stations by Ms. Fluke.

There are a number of reasons for this.  First of all, Ms. Fluke put herself in the position of a limited-purpose public figure by her congressional testimony.  Second, while calling someone a ?slut? or other sexual derogatory term in many states is considered defamatory even without having to allege specific harm, Ms. Fluke, because of being a public figure at least for this controversy would have to show actual malice which would be difficult for her to do.  Finally, even if actual malice could be shown which is unlikely, Mr. Limbaugh would likely have a First Amendment defense that his monologue was constitutionally protected hyperbole.  Mr. Limbaugh would assert, as he did in his apology, that listeners likely perceived his comments as rhetorical hyperbole, and would not reasonably believe his epithets were meant to be true statements.

Unfortunately, radio stations are not completely out of the regulatory briar bush.  The FCC uses an impossible-to-define public interest standard in considering whether to renew a radio station?s license.  It is safe to say that no radio station will ever lose its license for sporadic or occasional statements such as at issue here.  That does not mean, however, that a radio station cannot suffer at license renewal time because of such incidents.

Anyone, anywhere, can file an objection against a radio station?s license renewal application.  The FCC, at least for the past several years, has appeared to make a practice of holding up a radio station?s license renewal application even for benign content complaints.  Most license renewal content complaint holds are for indecency while that issue works its way through the courts.  But, one recent radio license renewal application was held and not routinely granted for what the FCC?s staff called a ?bigotry? complaint about a radio show in which calls were taken on the subject of the intelligence of immigrants.

An FCC hold on a radio station?s license renewal application can have costly side-effects.  First, while a license renewal application is pending, the FCC will not allow a sale of the radio station to take place.  Second, an license renewal application not granted in the routine course could have adverse ramifications on existing debt instrument financing covenants, or in seeking new or renewal financing.  Third, a pending license renewal leaves the door open for anyone else to pile on by filing additional objections against the subject license renewal application

Thus, when listeners complain to radio stations about programming, licensees are well advised to listen and respond to their listeners.  Remember that comments or complaints about programming are required to be put into the local public file.

Also, while not required by any FCC rule or policy, it is sometimes prudent to take affirmative steps to address programming comments or complaints, even to the extent of giving listeners airtime to voice their own comments or concerns over controversial programming.  It is far less costly in both time and legal fees to give several listeners the opportunity to voice their concerns in response to statements such as made by Mr. Limbaugh, than it is to suffer objections being filed against an upcoming license renewal application.

Meanwhile, thank goodness for our First Amendment.  Let?s hope that the FCC?s misguided foray into content complaints at license renewal time is not used adversely against stations that carry robust political commentary.

Yes I’m up early every morning taking care of my retarded cousin Billy Boy. He likes to watch FOX & Friends because it makes him feel smart. He winds down after Limbaugh on the radio and takes a nap. Billy Boy wakes up happy & refreshed around dinner time to tell me fantastic stories about a quest for he and his mentally deficient cult to defeat the evil sorcerer Bak Obam and save the USA!

I’m joking, right spoact.blogspot.com

We really must get rid of the GOP in the next few election cycles. Republicans/Conservatives are making Americans look bad in the eyes of the rest of the world. Go to any foreign nation to ask the locals and you’ll hear question about why the USA allowed so many of it’s people to get so stupid as to have voted for George W. Bush and Sarah Palin. The right-wing is going to go down in history as the biggest sucker fools EVER!

Actually Americans are more than ready to go to the streets to get the silver spoon, trust fund baby Aristocrats. WAR is such good practice. 100,000 of young concerned citizens trained to kill evil doers.

I think Obama/Biden has used the Bush/Cheney wars as the worlds greatest government run jobs program because they know the Republicans won’t vote for ANYTHING else that might help America make a comeback during Democratic rule…
Just because there’s almost 50 MILLION Americans struggling below the poverty level… Damn socialism, right?

By the way, who won the Oscar’s?
