Anderson Retiring From Salem

10-9-14

Greg Anderson ends a 44-year radio career, including the last 21 years with Salem. At the end of 2014, Anderson will step down as president of the Salem Radio Network. Salem CEO Ed Atsinger, who appointed Anderson as the first GM of the newly established Salem Radio Network, said, "Launching a new national radio network to serve Christian and conservative audiences was no small undertaking. When I appointed Greg Anderson to lead this effort, I had enormous confidence in his vision, experience, and determination. Today I can say that Greg surpassed even my own high expectations. He is, without question, one of the finest radio professionals I have ever worked with."

Anderson added, "Looking back, I have been incredibly blessed to work for great radio stations and great media companies, including, for the past 21 years, Salem Communications. I am particularly indebted to Ed Atsinger and Stu Epperson who have supported me along the way in the creation and growth of our national businesses. Most of all I am in awe of the Salem National team who stop at nothing to accomplish great things year after year. They are simply the best. It's been my privilege and pleasure to have worked with them."

Upon his retirement, other Salem senior executives will assume Greg's responsibilities.

Owner Tom Anderson Dies at Age 72.

9-28-2012

Long-time radio station owner Tom Anderson died Thursday morning. Anderson was the owner of Eastern Utah Broadcasting.  His son Paul sent the following e-mail to a friend, "For many years my dad would wake up at 4:44 each morning and headed into work at around 5:45.  He passed away this morning surrounded by his family at around that same time.  If there is anything he ever was, it was consistent."

WIXE (Monroe, NC) President Archie Morgan said about Anderson, "He and I were both members of the International Broadcaster's Idea Bank and knew each other through Radio Conventions.  Tom was always helpful and we would always speak at these conventions but I really did not know him well or for many years.  This is why I was surprised when he reached out to me. A few years ago out of the blue Tom called me and said that he would be in Charlotte for a meeting and would I like to get together for dinner? You kidding me?  I jumped at the chance to spend time with Tom who forgot more than I'll ever know about this business. We had a great dinner and shared a lot of information with each other about our operations and about the business in general.  I recall not wanting to leave the restaurant. I often wondered why Tom would reach out to me like he did.  I am just a lowly one-station operator but, you know what,  I wasn't to Tom and I never forgot that. I will really miss him and am truly sorry for his passing."
Anderson owned Eastern Utah Broadcasting. He was adopted and raised by Jack Richards who owned the company before him. He was raised in Price along with a brother and a sister after their father left them. Tom's mother died when he was 17 years of age, leaving him with no place to live and a year of high school left to complete. He moved in with his newly wed sister and brother-in-law to complete high school. Shortly after the beginning of the school year his speech class teacher, Neil Warren told him about a part time job opening at the radio station and encouraged him to apply. Tom got the job and during the course of the year he and the childless Jack Richards became acquainted and they were impressed with his desire to leave to attend the University of Utah. Jack called an acquaintance, Slim Wycoff, who owned a trucking company in Salt Lake and arranged for a job for Tom. Following graduation from the University of Utah with a BS in Marketing, Tom returned to Price to serve as salesman/manager for the Richards.

Anderson Inks Deal With Hogan

The employee moves at radio's top two companies continues. Some leave in disgust. Some are nudged out given an opportunity to resign with a little dignity. Others are just shown the door, handed their box of wall plaques and, perhaps, a little soup money to keep them going until the next gig comes along. Anderson will move from Cumulus to Clear Channel, having spent 5 minutes on the beach, and John Hogan says he's happy as a clam.

Anderson was most recently at the Citadel network, then with Cumulus for a short time as Lew Dickey moved to put his own stamp on his new toys. Anderson will take over the West Region for Clear Channel. He gets the Sr. V.P title and will lead programming strategy initiatives. Clear Channel Radio President John Hogan said ?We are thrilled to have Carl join the Clear Channel team. He joins a growing number of the best and brightest programmers, on-air talent and researchers on Clear Channel?s incredible team.?

Anderson has spent the past 22 years as an executive in broadcast, working in all aspects of the radio industry including on-air talent, music director, production director, news director and program director.  Most recently he was the Senior Vice President of Programming and Distribution at Citadel Media, where he served as the company?s top programming strategist and led efforts to develop compelling content for affiliates, advertisers and listeners.  He oversaw a portfolio with more than 4,000 affiliates reaching 121 million weekly listeners.  Anderson started at Citadel in 2006 as the Vice President of Music Programming.

Carl Anderson Out At Cumulus

Anderson was the Senior VP for Media Networks and it sounds like the change was something coming for both sides. Cumulus says the change comes as part of the restructuring although others say Anderson had another opportunity that he'll be announcing shortly. Cumulus CEO Lew Dickey tells Radio Ink the change "will better enable us to mine our platform for content, identify holes and/or weaknesses and then make coordinated investments in content and services that are warranted." And Anderson's replacement will be announced shortly as part of the organizational restructuring."
