McConnell Enters New Mexico Hall

The New Mexico Broadcasters Association recently inducted three people from radio into the Hall, including Milt McConnell, who's now with Larry Wilson's Alpha Broadcasting. Judith Jenkins and Allen Lumeyer are also now Hall-of-Famers. Jenkins has been on Albuquerque radio for more than 30 years, finding her home at 77 KKOB. She is the NMBA Hall of Fame?s first female radio reporter. After several moves in radio, Lumeyer became GM and part-owner at a station in Las Cruces until his retirement in November 2013.

Pandora Enters Final Stage Of Media Buying Integration

Pandora says it is integrating a new e-Business advertising technology solution that will allow for "frictionless planning and buying for media buyers." Pandora Chief Revenue Officer John Trimble says, "With this new solution, we are combining the ease of buying traditional radio with the accountability of digital by enabling a more seamless, end-to-end platform from planning through the final billing transaction." The new platform integrates the largest media buying software platforms, Mediaocean and STRATA, with proprietary software built  by Pandora's engineering team in conjunction with Pandora's ad operations and billing teams.

Pandora says this marks the launch of the final stage of its plans to fully integrate Pandora into media buying platforms. The first step, announced in May 2012, was the launch of Triton Digital's measurement of Pandora in traditional radio metrics such as AQH and Cume. The second phase, announced in March 2013, integrated Pandora audience data via Triton ratings into the Mediaocean and STRATA media buying platforms.

Twitter Enters Music Game

The New York Times and All Things D are both reporting that Twitter is about to launch a music feature that will use the listening habits of users' friends and followers to recommend music. It's part of the company purchase of We Are Hunted. Exactly when the service will launch is unclear.

Twitter set up a blank page with the silhouetted bird logo, ?#music? and a sign-in tab that, when clicked, asked users to give a trending music application access to their account. It describes an app that can scan your Twitter feed, update their profiles and post tweets, suggesting an ability to alert users about the music their friends were listening to.

Randy Micahels Enters Philadelphia

Merlin Media, headed by CEO Randy Michaels, gets a smidge bigger with an agreement to purchase Family Stations' WKDN-FM in Camden, NJ which serves the Philadelphia market. The station currently airs a Christian format. Michaels told Radio Ink last night the format "was undetermined". However, unless he's suddenly gone south on his new style of delivering news and information, Philadelphia will soon be home to another all-news station. The questions that remain will be the voices delivering the product and the approach he takes when the flip occurs. Is he as gung-ho on the original plan, targeting women or will it be more of a traditional news delivery? CBS owns KYW in Philly. Another highly successful brand CBS has cultivated over the years. It is on the AM dial.

In typical Randy Michaels fashion, the press release joked ""Merlin Media is now actively looking for staff that can pronounce Schuykill, Wissahickon, Manayunk, Tredyffrin, Gwynedd, Pennsauken, and Bryn Mawr."

WKDN joins Merlin's stable of  classic rock WLUP/Chicago and News outlets WWWN/Chicago and WEMP/New York -- Merlin backer GTCR purchased a controlling interest in the stations from Emmis earlier this year. The company is co-owned by GTCR, Emmis Communications, and Michaels.

Media Venture Partners represented Family Radio in the deal.

Iowa Radio Host Enters The Herman Cain Mess

Politico is reporting that Des Moines talk show hest Steve Deace is now accusing Herman Cain of inappropriate comments. Deace told Politico Cain said "awkward" and "inappropriate" things to the staff at his station. "Like awkward/inappropriate things he's said to two females on my staff, that the fact the guy's wife is never around...that's almost always a warning flag to me."
Deace also told Politico "Many a man has been done in by the inability to control his urges. I am no different and just as vulnerable as any other man, which is why I put safeguards around me and hold myself accountable to my wife and other men in my life. Especially since I have very talented employees that happen to be women. I go out of my way to treat them like my sisters. For example, I wouldn't tell them or any other woman I am not married to nor related to how pretty she is."

Cumulus Citadel Merger Enters Final Stages

In a little over a month Citadel Stockholders will decide if they want the company to be purchased by Cumulus. A special meeting of the Citadel stockholders will take place on Thursday, September 15th at 8AM on Park Avenue in New York City. And while that meeting takes place, Cumulus CEO Lew Dickey will have, by then, double-checked to make sure his cel-phone battery is fully charged and his connection is strong. During the vote, Dickey will be on stage in Chicago with CBS's Dan Mason and Hubbard's Bruce Reese for the NAB/RAB Radio show leadership breakfast.

Citadel?s board of directors unanimously recommends that shareholders vote ?FOR? the adoption of the merger agreement. If approved, each share of Citadel Class A common stock and Citadel Class B common stock will be converted into the right to receive $37.00 in cash.

Ronald Reagan Enters Radio Hall of Fame

The National Radio Hall of Fame announced its Class of 2011 today and at the top of the list is former President Ronald Reagan. Reagan began his storied career in broadcasting as an Iowa  radio sportscaster where be once announced Chicago Cubs games for WOC/Davenport, Iowa and WHO/Des Moines, Iowa. The induction ceremony and national broadcast will take place on Saturday, November 5th in Chicago.

The other inductees are sportscaster Graham McNamee, news commentator H.V. Kaltenborn, The WLS National Barn Dance ? First broadcast in 1924, it was the first acclaimed country music show in radio history, The Great Gildersleeve ? One of radio?s earliest spin-off programs, Gangbusters - The iconic radio crime drama series that dramatized FBI cases, Suspense, a radio drama.

Bruce DuMont, Chairman of the NRHOF Steering Committee tells Radio Ink "Ronald Reagan represents the quintessential young man of the 1930?s from the Midwest who during the late 20?s and early 30?s fell in love with radio --- and made it his first big goal---until Hollywood called. Ronald Reagan is the second President inducted into the National Radio Hall of Fame ?and like Franklin D. Roosevelt  (inducted in 2007) , Reagan was chosen by the Radio Hall of Fame Steering Committee. In fact each year for the past 15 years there is one inductee chosen by the Committee?and not voted in by the public. There is nothing new to this process."

Dumont also says In 1995 when the Radio Hall of Fame celebrated radio?s 75th anniversary ,the Steering Committee made numerous  inductions that included many pioneers ?and several minorities who had been overlooked by history. "In fact, the Committee has discussed during many meetings over the past decade the need to play ?catch up? --like we did in 1995 (see below ) on pioneers who have never received enough votes when pitted against one another during public voting. Unfortunately, few people alive today  know  who these inductees are?but that is the primary role of the National Radio Hall of Fame?to educate the public and the leaders of the radio industry about those who came before them."

The 2011 selections were made by the 27 members of the National Radio Hall of Fame Steering Committee, a diverse group of radio executives, historians, academics and civic leaders. Tickets to the ceremony are $250 each ? and VIP tables of ten are available for $15,000--$10,000--$5,000--and $2,500 online at www.RadioHOF.org. The National Radio Hall of Fame and the Museum of Broadcast Communications are both 501 (c-3) tax-exempt organizations. The 2011 ceremony will be the first to be held in the new Museum of Broadcast Communications at 360 N. State Street in Chicago, where the National Radio Hall of Fame gallery is housed.

Reagan has a legacy so distorted by the Conservative idolization of him that we may never have a clear picture of the real man behind the television. Did he rid the world of commie scum?
