iHeartRadio Gaining Ground On Pandora

4-25-13

The marketing power of hundreds of radio stations and the iHeartRadio Music Festical may be paying off for Clear Channel in its battle with Pandora to be the number one music app for the consumer. According to the data compiled by Arbitron and Edison, Pandora is by far the most recognized online music brand. One out of every five people had listened to Pandora in the past week. Seventy percent of those surveyed are aware of Pandora, compared to 45 percent who were aware of iHeartRadio. The good news for Clear Channel is that one year ago, only 31 percent were aware of iHeartRadio showing a big jump in awareness in only 12 months. Twenty-two percent were aware of Spotify in the most recent study.

LA Radio History Falls To The Ground

2-27-2013

The tower of the once popular KHJ Los Angeles was pulled to the ground yesterday. KHJ-AM, which stood for kindness, happiness and joy, was a very popular Top 40 station before FM came along. The tower was prepped for four days and it took a few seconds to pull it to the ground. You can watch a video of the demolition here on KTLA.

I worked at WRKO, the RKO Boston version of KHJ, in the 70's both as a high school intern, and later as a salesman. Sadly, the RKO programmers like Bill Drake would have forgotten more, than most (though certainly not all) of today's programmers will ever know. The RKO programmers never "gamed the system" with such a pathetic, uncreative approach of today, with 45 minute music sweeps followed by 12-14 commercials in a row, that drives away listeners and shafts the advertisers.

Starting at 5pm on Sunday, the 10th anniversary of the 9/11 attacks, John will broadcast a 4 hour special at Ground Zero, site of the deadliest and most devastating attack the United States ever suffered. John and the people who were there will tell the compelling stories of that horrific day. He will explore what we lost, what we learned, and what lies ahead for our country in the eternal fight against evil. John will attack the lies and explode the conspiracy theories, and tell you how the radicals are trying harder than ever to attack us again.
