Smyth: "We Need To Innovate"

Greater Media Chairman and CEO Peter Smyth was one of 11 broadcasters honored Thursday at the 12th Annual Giants of Broadcasting & Electronic Arts Annual Luncheon, sponsored by the Library of American Broadcasting. The honorees were recognized for their contributions to the media industry in the last half century. Smyth said, ?I am so honored and humbled to be recognized among the Giants of Broadcasting. As broadcasters, we have a responsibility to preserve the past while embracing the future for the next generation of broadcasters. As technology continues to provide exciting new opportunities in the radio and television industries, we need to look for innovative ways to provide our listeners, viewers, and advertisers with the very best entertainment experience possible." The event was held at Gotham Hall in New York City.

Other individuals recognized for their outstanding contributions at the event included Pablo Ra?l Alarc?n Sr., Ra?l Alarc?n Jr., David Barrett, Regis Philbin, Chuck Scarborough, Fred Silverman, Judy Woodruff, Gwen Ifill, Sylvester L. ?Pat? Weaver, and Virginia Forwood Pate Wetter.

The Library of American Broadcasting is located at the University of Maryland and is entering its 42nd year serving as the national information resource for the radio and television industries, as well as the academic communities that rely upon it for depth and expertise. The Library?s collections of historic documents, professional papers, oral and video histories, books, and photographs are among the most extensive in the nation.

Contemporary music radio programmers treat the word "innovation" in one of two ways: 1.) As a dirty word spoken only by unsophisticated potty-mouths who simply do not understand the concept. Or, 2.) Something they think they are already practicing. (cue: rolling eyes and heavy sighs sfx.)

excellent comments from a long time innovator. my point(s) exactly that radio's money comes from customer needs, not it's mass listening audience. Every radio station should be multicasting multiple music formats. AND every radio station should be creating messages that are NOT used over the air. i.e. click to audio and image 'non-advertising' messages
