Broadcasters Should Be Able to Sue Pirates

4-10-15

That's is the subject of FCC Commissioner Michael O'Rielly's blog this week. O'Reilly says the truth about pirates are they are not cute; they are not filling a niche; they are not innovation test beds; and they are not training grounds for future broadcasters. "If broadcasting were a garden, pirate radio would be poisonous crabgrass. Put another way, pirate radio participants are similar to outlaws who rob a retail store and then sell the stolen inventory online. Everyone should agree that pirate radio stations ? by any definition ? are completely illegal."

Don't you mean "Really incoherent?" Mr. O'Reilly's comments are right on the money. I'll draw another parallel. Pirates are like tax cheats. Oh, wait. That's another thing they already are.

So your solution is to encourage more litigation? Wow... there's a REAL TRAILBLAZER?! Not really. When will this clown offer something, unique and bold, instead of trying to make headlines for tired, old tactics.

Pirates Caught Operating Near Boston

8-17-13

This time it was local firefighters who caught the illegal operators not the FCC. According to EnterpriseNews.com, Brockton firefighters were experiencing interference on their car radios and music started playing over the speakers in the station used for dispatching fire engines. The local police were called in and a satellite dish and an FM antenna were located across the street from the fire station.
Brockton City Councilor Dennis DeNapoli said, "The antenna extended nearly 60 feet in the air and an unlicensed station was broadcasting on 88.9 MHz, right next to WERS in Boston. The headline on this is public safety. That interference put residents at risk.?
According to EnterpriseNews.com the antenna was on a building that houses several storefronts, one advertising shipping to Haiti and another the Cardoso Driving School. When Brockton police officer Scott Uhlman approached a group of Haitian men hanging out behind the building and asked who owned the radio equipment, the men did not give a straight answer. He then climbed on the roof with a pair of wire cutters and quickly found the owner. The station was shut down immediately and the next day the antenna and radio equipment were gone.

CBS And The Pirates Are Family

The Pittsburgh Pirates have not won a World Series since 1979 (can you name who they defeated?), however CBS RADIO has lots of love for the team that Stargell built. The Pirates and KDKA-FM, Sportsradio 93-7 The Fan, announced they've entered into a multi-year agreement beginning with the 2012 season. The games were being carried on Clear Channel's WPGB-FM.

KDKA-FM is the lone 24/7 sports station in Pittsburgh. KDKA will also broadcast pre- and post-game shows for all 162 regular-season games and the "Neal Huntington Show" prior to Sunday Pirates games. Pirates broadcasters Greg Brown, Tim Neverett, Steve Blass, Bob Walk and John Wehner will continue to call the game action, and will also be heard as regular guests on CBS RADIO's Pittsburgh stations. Pittsburgh Pirates baseball game broadcasts will continue to be aired on the Pirates Radio Network, which is owned by the team. The network consists of 38 radio station affiliates across four states.
