"Boston Herald Drive" Debuts Monday

1-4-2015
Boston Herald Radio, WMEX 1510 AM, is signing on a new morning team Monday with the debut of "Boston Herald Drive." Adriana Cohen, Boston Herald political columnist, and Tom Shattuck will form the core of the new team airing 7-9am weekdays.
Herald Editor-in-Chief Joe Sciacca says in The Boston Herald, "Media who simply recite the 'live and local' mantra aren?t cutting it. 'Boston Herald Drive' will deliver with hosts who are from here and reporters who cover the news that is happening here right now, in real time. The power of our multimedia reporting combined with the 5,000 watts of WMEX makes this new morning show an instant must-listen."
The Herald is also reporting some other reshuffling on Boston Herald Radio, "Sports Town"  will move to the 1 - 4 p.m slot and "The Money Show," formerly an hour-long weekly, now gains the 4-6pm time slot.

Boston Still a Pirate Town

5-14-14

Public Radio WBUR in Boston has a follow-up report on pirate radio operators in and around the city of Boston. It was one month ago that Charles Clemons made national news after his station Touch 106 was closed down by the feds, all of his equipment confiscated. WBUR reports the FCC has issued over 90 citations to pirate operators in Massachusetts, including one to David Cange who is still operating Radio Bel Top and tells WBUR, "I am broadcasting with my heart like beating because any time they might pop up. They might show up, say, shut it off.? Radio Bel Top used to broadcast on 88.5 FM from Roslindale and was shut down. Now, it?s operating illegally at 107.5 FM in Mattapan.

Major Changes at WEEI Boston

5-12-14

In an effort to better compete with CBS' The Sports Hub, Entercom is making changes to sports-talker WEEI-FM. Former NFL tight end Christian Fauria (pictured) will join Lou Merloni middays. And, joining Fauria and Merloni will be 970 ESPN Pittsburgh sports personality and Clear Channel Pittsburgh sports director Tim Benz beginning in late May. Merloni has co-hosted middays since 2011. Merloni?s current co-host, Mike Mutnansky, will shift to another role inside the company that will be announced within the next few weeks.

WEEI program director and brand manager Kevin Graham said, ?We are thrilled with the new team we have assembled.  This show will be the only sports radio program in New England that offers listeners insight from a former major leaguer and a former NFL player. When you add in the sports radio experience of New England native Tim Benz, listeners will hear a brand new sound in the market.?  Graham describes the new program as ?fast-paced, loose and fun with a diverse mix of opinions and entertainment.?   The show will be called ?Middays with MFB? and will also be heard across New England on the WEEI Radio Network.

(5/12/2014 3:19:44 PM)
I would compare listening to sports talk radio to being at a party-- that is, you can listen to other people (including the talk show hosts) talk to each other for a few minutes, but after awhile, you want to chime in and participate in the conversation, or you move on to another group. Listening to a conversation that other people are having, without outside participation, becomes boring after a few minutes. Bringing in callers, helps to keep it lively.
(5/12/2014 2:18:10 PM)
WEEI had some great personalities, no question. But they make one big huge mistake that is a failure of programming-- they (WEEI) do not take enough phone calls from the listeners. The highest-rated Talkradio- including sports talk- is two way INTERACTIVE talk radio, with a non-stop flow of callers, who weigh in on the air, with the hosts. WEEI lets their hosts go on and on, 15, 20 minutes and more, talking to each other, with no listener involvement for large stretches of time. Big big mistake.

After 8 Years FCC Shuts Down Pirate In Boston

4-17-14

The stations is called "Touch 106.1 FM," operated by former mayoral candidate Charles Clemons. Mass Live is reporting that U.S. Marshals raided the station on Thursday and shut it down. Clemons held a press conference where he admitted he didn't have a license, which he said was pending. In a video on the Mass Live website, Clemons said, "The FCC has decided to silence the community again. Rosa Parks sat at the front of the bus. It was illegal to sit at the front of the bus, but it was the right thing to do."

(4/18/2014 9:52:40 AM)
Clemons disgraces the memory of Rosa Parks by invoking her name. It was wrong for Montgomery to give preference to whites on city buses. It's not wrong for the FCC to require all stations (without regard to the color of the operator's skin) to be licensed before going on the air.
(4/18/2014 7:16:18 AM)
TouchFM was easy pickings for the FCC. So was Hot 97 a couple years ago. Now try coming to The Bronx. There are pirates here operating on nearly every blank spot on the dial. Most are in Spanish. Some operate only at night or on weekends. I wrote about the phenomenon here a few months ago. Since then many more have come on. Mostly small. But a couple of the signals carry a lot farther than TouchFM ever did.

Pirates Caught Operating Near Boston

8-17-13

This time it was local firefighters who caught the illegal operators not the FCC. According to EnterpriseNews.com, Brockton firefighters were experiencing interference on their car radios and music started playing over the speakers in the station used for dispatching fire engines. The local police were called in and a satellite dish and an FM antenna were located across the street from the fire station.
Brockton City Councilor Dennis DeNapoli said, "The antenna extended nearly 60 feet in the air and an unlicensed station was broadcasting on 88.9 MHz, right next to WERS in Boston. The headline on this is public safety. That interference put residents at risk.?
According to EnterpriseNews.com the antenna was on a building that houses several storefronts, one advertising shipping to Haiti and another the Cardoso Driving School. When Brockton police officer Scott Uhlman approached a group of Haitian men hanging out behind the building and asked who owned the radio equipment, the men did not give a straight answer. He then climbed on the roof with a pair of wire cutters and quickly found the owner. The station was shut down immediately and the next day the antenna and radio equipment were gone.

Entercom Replacing Wolfe In Boston After 22 Years

8-14-13

It's hard to imagine WEEI in Boston without Jason Wolfe, but nothing lasts forever and today was Wolfe's last day as the company looks for fresh ideas in its daily battle with CBS' The Sports Hub for ratings and revenue. Wolfe tells Radio Ink that sports talker WEEI is going through a transition and he understands that. Wolfe said he did everything he could to help make the station win and he's thankful to Entercom for the opportunity he was given to work at WEEI, where he started when he was 24 years old.

Wolfe says, "Being involved in the growth of WEEI has been a tremendous honor. It's now time for me to move on to the next chapter of my career." He says over the next couple of weeks he's going to take the time to reconnect with his wife and kids.

Entercom Boston also stated that they would make an announcement about Wolfe?s replacement shortly. Market Manager Jeff Brown stated, ?Jason Wolfe has defined sports talk radio, not only in Boston but around the country as well. There are very few people who have influenced an industry like Jason has. From his work with the Jimmy Fund and the Red Sox's historic championship run, to WRKO's engagement with politics, Jason?s behind-the-scenes work has made an impact few people will ever understand. We thank Jason for all his hard work, dedication to Entercom, and his commitment to the Boston community.?

(8/16/2013 2:43:13 AM)
The hard reality is that Wolfe failed on two fronts. WEEI was a success as a sports station...while they had a monopoly on the format. But once CBS launched The Sports Hub in Boston, that was it for WEEI. And sorry, but Wolfe drove WRKO into the ground. The station is now a dead radio station.
