Host Misses Show For 1st Time In 56 Years

Pinky Kravitz, the longtime host of Pinky's Corner on WOND/Atlantic City has never called in sick or missed a show in his 56 years with the station. That changed on Friday, when the 87-year-old radio personality had heart issues and could not come in. He underwent heart surgery on Monday.

The hosts' son, Greg Kravitz released a statement on Wednesday morning, saying: "Pinky is recovering from heart surgery at the Heart Institute at AtlantiCare Regional Medical Center. We thank his many listeners, fans and friends for their concern and well wishes. We ask for privacy at this time. Pinky doesn't need anything right now other than the care the ARMC doctors and staff are giving him."

Longport Media President and General Manager Dave Coskey tells Radio Ink that there is no timetable for Kravitz's return, saying, "It's based solely on when he's ready." He added: "We'll make whatever arrangements necessary to accommodate Pinky when his doctors decide that he's ready."

In the interim, various hosts will fill-in for Kravitz's two-hour weekday afternoon shift. Tom LaMaine, who started his career at WOND before moving on to bigger markets, returned on Monday to fill in. Other fill-ins will include station staffers, such as Bob Burns, Dan Klein, and Don Williams. There will also be some "best of" shows created.

Kravitz has been hosting his Pinky's Corner show since June 1957, joining WOND in 1959.

20 Years For KKFN Denver

Kudos to Denver Sports station KKFN-FM 104.3 The Fan. The station will celebrate its 20th anniversary this coming Monday. The station launched in 1995 as KKFN-AM on 950 AM. The original weekday lineup included the Fabulous Sports Babe (Nanci Donnellan), Woody Paige & Todd Mansfield, Doug Moe & Tom Green, and Jeff Reckard. On Monday, The Fan will welcome back former personalities Woody Paige, Tom Green, Dan Issel, Charles Johnson, Irv Brown, and Joe Williams. They will be joined by Rockies radio announcer Jerry Schemmel. The Fan will also hold an anniversary party on March 26 in downtown Denver.

KKFN's current weekday lineup consists of The Fan Morning Show with Mike Evans, Nate Lundy and Vic Lombardi (5:30 a.m.-9 a.m.), Dan Patrick (9 a.m.-12 noon), Sandy Clough and Scott Hastings (Noon-3 p.m.), The Drive with Alfred "Big Al" Williams and Darren "D-Mac" McKee (3 p.m.-9 p.m.), and The Fan Late Night with Ryan Edwards and Shawn Drotar (9 p.m.-12 midnight). The Fan also continues to be Denver's home for play-by-play broadcasts of the NFL playoffs, Super Bowl, and March Madness.

Armstrong Logs 50 Years. Retiring Next Month.

On Tuesday Salem Communications announced Dave Armstrong is retiring from the company at the end of September. Armstrong has managed the LA, New York and San Diego clusters during his 20 years with Salem. He started in radio while still in his teens as a part-time DJ at a small station in Conneaut, Ohio and has gone on to hold positions as PD, Sales Manager and V.P./GM during his 50 years. Although he's leaving Salem, Armstrong was quick to say: "This is the end of another chapter in my work book but it's not the final chapter and I'm excited to see what's next." We spoke to Armstrong last night about his announcement.

RI: Why are you retiring?
ARMSTRONG: I am only retiring from Salem. I believe that there is a closing chapter to my career out there somewhere and I need to look for it.

RI: 50 years is a long time. How have you witnessed radio evolve and is it in a better place now?
ARMSTRONG: Consolidation has had the most impact. When there were multiple owners in a market; there was more variety and more competition. It seemed like radio was more fun then and much more spontaneous. We didn?t have to research everything before airing it. I can?t say that radio is in a better place when much of the creativity we saw over the years has disappeared. I am sure that research might show that things are better in some areas.

RI: What is the key to leading and managing people for as long as you have? 
ARMSTRONG: Hire good people?let them know what is expected and then help them grow to their full potential. I also tell them that they are required to have fun!!!!

RI: What/when was the time you had most fun at a radio station and why?
ARMSTRONG: I have enjoyed my time at Salem. I was given the opportunity to manage clusters in Los Angeles, New York and San Diego. I have seen Christian radio grow in the impact it has on the culture. It is rewarding to know that at the end of the day our station has touched lives in ways that we will never know.

RI: What do you want to see radio do better? 
ARMSTRONG: I think we need to return to the days of serving our local communities with on air personalities who are part of the community and stations that super serve there listener with more than ?eight hot hits in a row.?

RI:What are you going to miss the most and why?
ARMSTRONG: Anytime there is a change I always miss the people. It is amazing to realize that our staff creates a new product every 24 hours. No holidays?.no vacations?.no sick days for a radio station. Every day.. as they say?the show must go on!!! I look forward to the next act!!!

He Says 50 Years Is Enough

Long-time Salem General Manager Chuck Gratner is retiring from the radio business as of July 1, after serving the industry for 50 years. Gratner has worked for Salem for the last 23 years managing the company's cluster in Pittsburgh. Gratner has worked at some very big stations during his storied radio career including KRLD, KCBI, and KLTY in Dallas, and KCRA TV/Radio and KROY in Sacramento. He was also part owner of KCNO in Grass Valley, CA. His first job was on-air at KNJO in Thousand Oaks, CA. During his 50 years in radio, Gratner has been on the air, he sold radio, he's programmed stations, he was a  GM and also a part-owner.

Salem Radio Division President David Santrella said, "Salem is blessed to have so many outstanding general managers taking care of business in our markets around the country, and Chuck has been one of our strongest for all these years. Chuck has earned his reward for a job well done, and we wish him many more years of success, only this time with a fishing rod instead of a radio tower."

Gratner will be replaced by the stations' General Sales Manager Tom Lemmon who has been with Salem in Pittsburgh almost 12 years. Salem Regional Operations VP Linnae Young said, "We have been so fortunate to have Chuck's wisdom and expertise all these years managing our stations in Pittsburgh. While Chuck will be sorely missed, we are pleased to have Tom in place in the market who has been working alongside Chuck all these years and is ready to take on this new responsibility."

After 60 Years Humphries Retires

Maxine Humphries joined WGRV-AM in Greenville, Tennessee in 1953 after working at Eastman during World War II. Tuesday was her final day on the job, according to TV station WBIR, where she focused on local news and funeral announcements building up a following that the station says netted her a 40-share in the ratings at one point. Her comment to the TV station about moving on, "It's been a responsible job-- let's say that and leave it there. But it's been a rewarding job too and I'm thankful," (picture courtesy WBIR TV).

Cowherd Celebrates 10 Years

ESPN's The Herd with Colin Cowherd hits the road today with a live broadcast from Legends Bar in New York from 10 a.m. ? 1 p.m. The broadcast is part of the fifth annual ESPN Audio Baseball Tour and in celebration of Cowherd?s 10-year anniversary at ESPN. Cowherd said, ?It?s The Herd?s 10-year anniversary and spending a day in New York is a great way to celebrate.?

After 8 Years FCC Shuts Down Pirate In Boston

The stations is called "Touch 106.1 FM," operated by former mayoral candidate Charles Clemons. Mass Live is reporting that U.S. Marshals raided the station on Thursday and shut it down. Clemons held a press conference where he admitted he didn't have a license, which he said was pending. In a video on the Mass Live website, Clemons said, "The FCC has decided to silence the community again. Rosa Parks sat at the front of the bus. It was illegal to sit at the front of the bus, but it was the right thing to do."

Clemons disgraces the memory of Rosa Parks by invoking her name. It was wrong for Montgomery to give preference to whites on city buses. It's not wrong for the FCC to require all stations (without regard to the color of the operator's skin) to be licensed before going on the air.

TouchFM was easy pickings for the FCC. So was Hot 97 a couple years ago. Now try coming to The Bronx. There are pirates here operating on nearly every blank spot on the dial. Most are in Spanish. Some operate only at night or on weekends. I wrote about the phenomenon here a few months ago. Since then many more have come on. Mostly small. But a couple of the signals carry a lot farther than TouchFM ever did.

Steve Black is host for a free 2-hour special that looks back 40 years to where it all began for the ?Thunder from Down Under,? revisiting the band?s formation, Angus' stage costumes and antics, the life and death of Bon Scott and replacing him with Brian Johnson 1980, as well as AC/DC?s greatest hits.

Special guest appearances include Kid Rock, Chris Henderson of 3 Doors Down, Dave Murray of Iron Maiden, Vernon Reid of Living Colour , Glenn Tipton of Judas Priest, and Steve Vai, plus clips from Keith Richards and Angus Young.

Kraddick Kept His Cancer A Secret For Years

In a lengthy and detailed piece about the sudden death of Kidd Kraddick, D magazine writer Jamie Thompson writes in the magazine's January issue that Kidd Kraddick?s best friend, attorney Toby Wilson, was the only person who knew Kraddick had lymphoma. Kraddick told Wilson back in 2009 during a golf outing and, by then, he had already begun an aggressive course of chemotherapy. The article includes details about Kraddick's strained relationship with his daughter, how he would get sick from chemo while attending events for his charity for kids, and his friendship with Dr. Phil. Over time, Thompson writes, Kraddick?s treatments seemed to work. "Doctors declared him cancer-free and his prognosis, they said, was good. Even so, they warned of serious side effects, including organ damage, that could shorten his life."

Thompson writes that Wilson wanted Kraddick to tell close friends. "Some had begun to wonder whether he had developed a drug problem. The speculation angered Wilson, but given how Kraddick looked, it made sense. Wilson argued that Kraddick should at least tell his daughter, Caroline. But the last few years had been difficult for Kraddick and his daughter. He had divorced her mother in 2008, after 21 years of marriage, and Kraddick didn?t want to put any additional strain on their relationship," Thompson writes. Wilson believes Kraddick did not want anyone to know because he did not want to be pitied.

Thompson also describes in detail exactly who was with Kraddick when he died and how it happened in late July of this year. "Kraddick stepped onto the bus with his friend and company CEO, George Laughlin. He took a sip of water, then dropped the bottle. Kraddick collapsed on the floor as Laughlin rushed toward him. He began performing CPR. The bus driver raced to a hospital several miles away, thinking it would be quicker than waiting for an ambulance." Kidd Kraddick was dead at the age of 53.

Its 14 Years For "Christmas Across The Lands."

Randy Sherwyn, PD for Beasley's  Sunny 106.3 WJPT-FM in Fort Myers will host the 14th annual ?Christmas Across the Lands,? a 12-hour radio Christmas show that airs mainly on Christmas Eve and Christmas Day in markets across the globe. Originating thirteen years ago as a tribute to our troops stationed overseas, ?Christmas Across the Lands? is written, produced, and hosted by Sherwyn. Sherwyn freshens the show every year which includes a mix of music and interviews. New interviews include Richard Marx, Trans-Siberian Orchestra and B.J. Thomas.

With the support of the American Forces Network-Radio (AFN Radio), ?Christmas Across the Lands? has become an annual signature event for troops stationed overseas and for ships at sea during the holiday season.  The Canadian Forces Network/Europe (CFN) also airs the show across Europe and NATO HQ.   This year, the show will be heard by military personnel stationed in over 177 countries around the globe. Additionally, the show will air nationwide and in international territories including Canada, West Indies, Cayman Islands, New Zealand, England, South Africa, Guam, Ireland, Kosovo, the Philippines and the U.S. Virgin Islands.

Seacrest Re-Ups With New Year's Rockin' Eve

Premiere-syndicated personality and American Idol host Ryan Seacrest has signed a deal to continue to host and produce Dick Clark's New Year's Rockin' Eve With Ryan Seacrest for an unspecified multi-year term. Seacrest began co-hosting the show with Clark in 2005 and became the sole host after Clark died last year.

Seacrest and Allen Shapiro executive-produce the show, which is presented by Dick Clark Productions. Seacrest said, "I think I will forever be both sentimental and grateful about my experiences with Dick Clark's New Year's Rockin' Eve. Allen and the DCP team, as well as everyone at ABC, are my valued partners in carrying Dick's vision forward. I'm humbled by their continued faith, and excited to work together to create new traditions and fun moments on the show that only live television can deliver."

Pierre Robert began working at WMMR over 30 years ago when he packed his San Francisco bags, gathered up his $600 in savings, and moved to Philadelphia after the rock station he was working for flipped to Country. He had a few friends in Philly and figured he could roll into town and find a nice radio gig. Robert knocked on every radio door in town and was finding no brotherly love for his talents. He came up empty and took a job at a health food store on South Street. The upcoming issue of Radio Ink magazine includes a back page interview with Robert. Here's a preview of that interview which touches on his commitment to community, his love for rock music, and his thoughts on kids breaking into the business like he did.

After about six months of lugging around 50 pound sacks of rice, Robert decided to take a detour on his way home from work and go see a palm reader. She asked him what questions he had for her. I asked "What is going to come of my career?" She said, "You are going to get a letter within the next two weeks. Follow what it says very carefully." I swear the next day I got a letter from the WMMR music director which lead to me being his assistant in the music library. Within a few days, they needed someone overnight on the weekends.?

Robert would pay his dues early on at WMMR. ?My beginnings there, 32 years ago, was working in the music library all week long, going home on Friday night and coming back late Friday night and doing the overnight Friday into Saturday, riding my bicycle home, coming back on Saturday night, doing overnight into Sunday. Sunday morning, I would ride my bicycle back to my apartment, getting my cereal, and then riding back to work and working all day in the music library. That's how I started. I did that almost until poverty and exhaustion took over, almost a year later, and the overnight show became available. I did the overnights for 2.5 years. Then I got offered the midday."

Pierre is the heart and soul of WMMR. His love and respect for our listeners is recognized and reciprocated by his legions of fans. Most of whom he has personally met, shaken their hand and offered a sincere, ?Good Day, Citizen!? He?s the penultimate example of grassroots, street marketing and the reward of loyalty that results. Pierre?s warm baritone is a comforting balm for his harried, workday listeners  and his quacking laugh helps them recognize the joys of our shared experience.

RI: Is it still as fun for you today as it was back when?
Robert: Oh yeah. Time after time, I go "Oh my god, this is great." There is no BS in that whatsoever. I am 58 and I go insane at Green Day concerts. I am in a mosh pit at The Offspring and at Rancid, which is a punk band that I love. Crosby, Still, Nash and Young are one of my favorite bands. I saw Graham Nash a few nights ago and he put on a magical show. I have gotten to know some members of the Pearl Jam camp and they are awesome. Each of these bands does something different.

RI: You are known for your community involvement. Why do you do all that?
Robert: Why wouldn't you, is the better question. You can't fix everything, but you can help. You can turn people onto things. Whether it?s talking about the breast cancer walk or the AIDS walk or broadcasting from the AIDS walk, which I did for many years, or just going out to a beef and beer for somebody or even mentioning it if you can't get there. It keeps you connected with the community. We have developed this bond with the listeners, which is why we are multigenerational. MMR defies traditional radio. We have listeners from 15-65 and everywhere in between.

RI: Do you believe kids can make it in the radio industry the way you did?
Robert: I don't know. It's tough. The people that come to us, come to us because they see what MMR is all about. Our intern crew and promotions crew is huge, and they are all young kids who grew up listening to MMR. They get it. I tell them, "Yes, it is tough. Get your degree. Get as many internships as you can. There are fewer and fewer stations like MMR, but there are some that are still out there. There are some great radio stations that are out there. The internship way, over the course of a college career can get you a lot of connections. I think they have to have the ability, the drive and not give up, plus a touch of luck.

Congrats To KUNR In Reno For 50 Years

In October 1963, KUNR in Reno first went on the air. It had a booming 10 watts of power at 88.1 on the dial and covered a radius of 13 miles. The station was located on the Reno campus with five students playing music from folk to classical. President Johnson had not evened signed the Public Broadcasting Act (1967).

In 1969 KUNR increased to 1,000 watts and in 1981 it became an NPR affiliate. Now at 88.7 KUNR is a full-time NPR affiliate carrying news, information, and classical music. The details of the 50 years of KUNR history is detailed in a nice piece written by Susan Skorupa in the Reno Gazette-Journal.

After 25 Years WXXI's Bob Smith Retires

He's the longtime host and producer of WXXI-AM Rochester's 1370 Connection and he's stepping down as host of the midday talk show. This past April, Bob Smith suffered a stroke and is currently in long-term rehabilitative care. WXXI President Norm Silverstein said, ?Bob?s incredible wealth of knowledge and curiosity of many varied topics made him such an engaging talk show host. His dedication to the program has made 1370 Connection essential to the Rochester community for more than 25 years.?

Smith started his career in broadcast news before his 20th birthday, when he landed his first full-time radio job as a reporter/anchor for Syracuse station WHEN (AM) while simultaneously enrolled in graduate school at Cornell University. He holds a Ph.D in American political and legal history from Cornell and taught undergraduate American political and diplomatic history courses to Cornell undergraduate students. He joined WXXI in March of 1988.

Throughout his career, Smith received several awards, including a New York State Associated Press Broadcasters Association Award and an Award for Media Excellence from the United Nations Association of Rochester. Smith has served as a member of the Board of Directors of the Rochester Rotary Club and the Small Business Council of the Rochester Chamber of Commerce. He's also author of the first of a series of major task force reports for the Urban League of Rochester, which helped launch public school reform in the city. 

 A national search for a new host of 1370 Connection is currently being conducted.

I knew Bob, from way back, as a fellow contributor to the (excellent but now long-gone) Broadcast Professionals Forum on Compuserve. He always had good and constructive advice for fellow broadcasters, and made many wise contributions to general discussion there.

Jones and Ham Sign On For Three More Years

The radio team of Steve Jones (pictured) and Jack Ham have signed on for at least three more three years of calling Penn State Football on the Penn State Sports Network. Jones and Ham will begin their 14th consecutive season of calling Nittany Lion football when the team meets Syracuse on Aug. 31 at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, N.J. Loren Crispell returns as the sideline reporter for Penn State football broadcasts and Roger Corey returns as the pre-game show host on the Penn State Sports Network.
Jones has served as the play-by-play voice of Nittany Lion basketball since 1982 and Penn State football since 2000. He also co-hosts the Penn State Football Show and Penn State Basketball Show every Thursday at 6:05 p.m. from late August through mid-March. Jones co-hosts Sports Talk weekdays from 1-3 p.m. on a trio of stations in State College (1450 AM), Altoona (1430) and Huntingdon (1150), and from 3-5 p.m. on Sunbury'sWKOK (1070). He is a Penn State graduate.

Knell Leaving NPR After Only 2 Years

Knell told the NPR Board of Directors he's leaving the company to become President and CEO of the National Geographic Society. Knell was hired after former CEO Vivian Schiller resigned following a controversy involving the Tea Party. She was recorded mocking conservatives and questioning whether NPR even needs federal funding. It took seven months to replace her. Knell will remain at NPR during the transition to find his replacement.

SiriusXM And MLB Extend Agreement Six Years

8-19-13

Sirius XM and Major League Baseball have agreed to a six-year extension of their agreement, which will now make MLB game broadcasts available on both Sirius and XM satellite radios, starting today. All MLB games will be available for the first time to subscribers with Sirius radios on either a Premier or All Access package. All MLB games will continue to air on all XM radios. SiriusXM has been brodacsting MLB games since 2005.

Entercom Replacing Wolfe In Boston After 22 Years

It's hard to imagine WEEI in Boston without Jason Wolfe, but nothing lasts forever and today was Wolfe's last day as the company looks for fresh ideas in its daily battle with CBS' The Sports Hub for ratings and revenue. Wolfe tells Radio Ink that sports talker WEEI is going through a transition and he understands that. Wolfe said he did everything he could to help make the station win and he's thankful to Entercom for the opportunity he was given to work at WEEI, where he started when he was 24 years old.

Wolfe says, "Being involved in the growth of WEEI has been a tremendous honor. It's now time for me to move on to the next chapter of my career." He says over the next couple of weeks he's going to take the time to reconnect with his wife and kids.

Entercom Boston also stated that they would make an announcement about Wolfe?s replacement shortly. Market Manager Jeff Brown stated, ?Jason Wolfe has defined sports talk radio, not only in Boston but around the country as well. There are very few people who have influenced an industry like Jason has. From his work with the Jimmy Fund and the Red Sox's historic championship run, to WRKO's engagement with politics, Jason?s behind-the-scenes work has made an impact few people will ever understand. We thank Jason for all his hard work, dedication to Entercom, and his commitment to the Boston community.?

The hard reality is that Wolfe failed on two fronts. WEEI was a success as a sports station...while they had a monopoly on the format.But once CBS launched The Sports Hub in Boston, that was it for WEEI. And sorry, but Wolfe drove WRKO into the ground. The station is now a dead radio station.
