Are You Leaving Digital Dollars on The Table?

8-21-14

The Media Financial Management Association and Borrell Associates says you are, by not focusing on digital when calling on local businesses. A new study called, ?Benchmarking Local Media?s Digital Revenues? focuses on the 36% of all advertising placed in local markets across the U.S. In 2013, according to Borrell?s research, the amount spent by local businesses was $97.3 billion of a total $268.7 billion. Of that amount, $24.7 billion went to digital media, representing one-fourth of all local advertising spent.

Borrell says the market is on track to increase local digital ad spending by 42%, to $35.2 billion this year. The research firm is projecting additional growth rates of 44% in 2015 and 37% in 2016, which would mean nearly half of all local ad dollars will be spent on digital platforms within the next two years.

The study says one of the challenges facing radio is that 50% of current local digital media spending is going to ?pure-play? Internet media enterprises. Borrell says, "digital media sales as a percentage of total ad revenue currently stands at 12% for print media and 6% for local broadcasters." The survey says slightly more than one-fourth (27.5%) of a local newspaper?s or broadcaster?s existing customers are also buying digital products as part of their ad spend with the media outlet. "This finding highlights the huge opportunity for selling digital media services to the three-in-four existing customers that aren?t currently buying digital media."

Gordon Borrell will be disscussing the study in a webinar being held by The Media Financial Management Association Tuesday, September 16 at 2:00 Eastern.

(8/22/2014 2:25:37 PM)
This makes my head hurt. The post says radio is leaving dollars on the table by not focusing on digital. But, there is no ROI for local digital advertising. Only 6% of digital goes to local broadcasters (and radio gets a small % of that). The post ends with "the huge opportunity for selling digital marketing services." That is an entirely different business model and requires a dedicated digital marketing staff. Ask Entercom & Mid-West Broadcasting. They're trying it now.

The very-well-connected Bob Raissman at The Daily News reports Smith is leaving ESPN-98.7 FM and heading to Sirius, where he'll get his own show. Currently Smith is a co-host with Ryan Ruocco on 98.7.

(AUDIO) Why is GM Alex Cameron Leaving HOT 97 in New York

2-12-14

When Emmis CEO Jeff Smulyan announced the purchase of WBLS-FM and WLIB-AM Tuesday night he also decided the manager to run his New York City cluster would be Deon Levingston. That meant HOT 97 General Manager Alex Cameron was out. The change did not come as a total surprise to Cameron who had been with the company for over ten years. She started at HOT 97 as the Sales Manager and took over the corner office just when the economy decided it needed to take a break. Smulyan said he loved Cameron and what she had done for Emmis, maneuvering the station through some tough times, and expects to see her succeed in other things. In her farewell note to HOT 97 employees, Cameron expressed her gratitude "for having had the chance to work with such a crazy, endearing and ?ber talented group of individuals who I hold in the highest regard."We spoke to Cameron about running a single New York City station, in a cluster world, her philosophy on managing and leading people and her plans for the future. Is John Hogan Leaving Clear Channel Today?

1-13-14

Rumors have been swirling for months about John Hogan retiring from radio's largest company. Radio Ink has learned that Clear Channel may announce, as early as today, the retirement of Hogan and his office has already been cleared out. Last week when we reached out to Clear Channel representatives about a possible Hogan retirement they quickly denied it, with company spokesperson Wendy Goldberg telling Radio Ink, "not true." Yesterday several Clear Channel representatives did not return any of our requests for comment. As a result of a Hogan retirement, we've also learned  President of Operations for Major Markets, Tom Schurr will get more responsibility and Clear Channel CEO Bob Pittman will step into the role of CEO for Radio. Schurr has been responsible for the markets generating the most revenue for Clear Channel.

Back in June it was announced that Hogan would be moving from San Antonio to New York City to be closer to the office in which Clear Channel CEO Bob Pittman worked. He was also given a $125,000 raise (to $1.125 Million per year), a housing allowance and moving expenses.

Hogan was named Chairman and CEO of Clear Channel?s Media and Entertainment division in February 2012. Prior to that Hogan was President and CEO (since August 2002).  Hogan has been with Clear Channel since 1999. He began his radio career in 1981 in Atlanta as an account executive with Meredith Broadcasting.

John Hogan has been on Radio Ink's 40 Most Powerful People in Radio list for 12 years. He held the number one spot in 2009 and 2010. He's been number two six times, including the last three years.

Commissioner Robert McDowell Leaving FCC

3-20-13

McDowell made the announcement at the agency's public meeting Wednesday. He's the longest-serving current commissioner, having joined the commission in 2006 to fill the unexpired term of then chairman Michael Powell. His first term ended June 1, 2009, but he was renominated by President Obama and confirmed for a new, five-year term.

After hearing about the McDowell resignation, NAB President and CEO Gordon Smith said, "Robert McDowell has been a remarkably gifted public servant during his seven-year tenure at the FCC. His good humor and grace have been matched only by his ardent support for fair media ownership rules and full-throated support for a vibrant First Amendment. Commissioner McDowell will succeed in whatever path he chooses, and NAB wishes him well."

Here's the official McDowell statement from Wednesday.

"After nearly seven years of carrying out the incredibly high honor of serving the American people at the FCC, it is time to turn more of my energies towards an even higher calling: serving my family. After a great deal of deliberation, I have decided that I will step down as a commissioner of the Federal Communications Commission in a few weeks.
"Today?s announcement is not a farewell. As you know, I don?t do well with those, so let?s avoid all of that for now and tackle that challenge another day. I will also save most of my expressions of appreciation for a later date. But I would be remiss if I didn?t offer up some of the bigger thank-yous right away, such as to: God, my parents, my beautiful bride Jennifer, our three amazing children, as well as our large family-at-large, friends, all of my colleagues on the Commission -- both past and present -- and the talented and dedicated public servants throughout the FCC, especially all of the wonderful and tireless professionals who have worked on my team in my office. Please keep in mind that trying to make me look good day after day as we fought for freedom must have been quite a challenge for them.
"I would also like to thank the individuals who literally handed me this job, twice: first and foremost, Senator Ted Stevens, President George W. Bush, Senator Mitch McConnell and President Barack Obama, as well as many members of Congress. Thank you for placing such enormous trust in me.
"Again, this is not a time for farewells, I?m just announcing my plans to step down sometime soon. So what am I doing next? I will be talking to the FCC?s Chief Ethics Officer, Patrick J. Carney, to make sure that my departure is in full compliance with the letter and spirit of all of our ethics rules. Beyond that, I have no plans other than to take my family on a much-needed vacation starting this weekend."

(AUDIO) Why I'm Leaving Radio For Sirius.

2-6-13

The news broke yesterday that after two decades on the radio, syndicated talker Michael Smerconish will be taking his show to Sirius Satellite radio. Starting April 15, Smerconish will be heard on the soon-to-be revamped P.O.T.U.S. channel. And while he was on in 80 markets, including Los Angeles (KFWB-AM), Philadelphia (WPHT-AM), and Dallas (KRLD-AM), it was a tall task getting that affiliate number to grow.

Smerconish's middle-of-the-road approach to politics was not heard on any Cumulus and Clear Channel radio stations. Smerconish's business manager and partner told Radio Ink last night, "Radio has a responsibility to deliver a variety of viewpoints. There's a need for Michael's voice on the airwaves and that voice was being rejected by a lot of broadcast radio stations." Smerconish says if, five years from now, talk radio hasn't changed, it's in a real dark spot. Here's what Smerconish had to say about why he's leaving radio for satellite?

Smerconish will air on Sirius weekdays from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. ET channel 124, SiriusXM's non-partisan channel dedicated to the "Politics of the United States." It will also replay during evening drive from 6:00 to 9:00 p.m. ET, and will be available on SiriusXM On Demand.

(3/7/2013 7:09:59 PM)
I listened to Smerconish once a few years ago in Philly. He talked for awhile about a bidet (toilet) he wanted to buy. OMG how boring.. I never listened again. Being a former radio air talent and writer I am inclined to listen longer. You have to be a masachist to listen to some talk radio. I would never wait an hour or more to talk to any host. But some people just love to hear themselves on the radio.. Listeners and hosts included.
(3/7/2013 1:04:00 PM)
A non-story. A gig is a gig. However one thing is clear: Laurence Glavin is a troll.
(3/7/2013 12:29:31 PM)

The real problem is that people in the US have been brainwashed into believing what Rush, Hannity, Savage and team say as being the voice of conservatism when in fact there is not conservative about what they say.

As a for instance, all of the above mentioned talk show hosts, support the US initiating the numerous recent wars in the middle east. Such thinking is of the "we are the policemen of the world, we make things right" mentality and need to be involved in everything everyone does. True conservatives like Ron Paul, oppose this policy.

The real problem again is far too many people in the US who claim to be conservative don't even know the conservative position. Instead they go along with whatever the establishment Republican Party says is their position.

As another example, take note of the huge number of conservatives that supported liberal, Mitt Romney. His liberal position regarding many issues should have awakened Republicans but it didn't because they have allowed the establishment Republican Party to dictate their mindset.

The establishment Republican Party is run by the largest corporations (bankster, oil, clear, etc) in the world. If you don't make their position your own, then you won't get a fair shake.

Michael Schmerconish is correct in leaving terrestrial radio but he doesn't seem to understand the reason behind all of it.

(3/7/2013 12:27:20 PM)
To the commenter who wrote "even less people will listen to you"; the correct word is "fewer". Right-wingers have trouble with the English language even though they constantly want to proclaim English as the only official language of the US.
(3/7/2013 12:16:37 PM)
Middle of the road means "no opinion" in my book . . . and no opinion mean no one is going to care. If no one listened for free, I don't see how his numbers will improve when people now have to pay for it. Best of luck.

Smerconish Leaving Radio for Satellite.

3-5-2013

The AP is reporting Smerconish will move his show to the POTUS channel on SiriusXM April 15. He tells the AP, "It gives me the opportunity to move away from an environment that, quite frankly, is not conducive to the type of program I'm offering. I don't do ideologically- driven talk, I do content talk. I'm not on the air to carry anybody's water on a day-to-day basis." Smerconish went on to bash talk radio a little more.

"The only people I meet for whom the issues are hard left or hard right, the only people who see the world through ideological glasses, are those who have a microphone in front of them," he told AP. Smerconish is heard in over 80 markets.

An affiliate that carries Laura's show tells Radio Ink that Ingraham has confirmed she's leaving Talk Radio Network as of today, but gave no other details other than to say she would not be on the air today. Laura's people were very cryptic last night, only willing to say, "she's totally keeping everything in the dark."

Dial Global is under contract with TRN for Ingraham's show. In August, TRN filed an anti-trust lawsuit against Dial Global. In September, Michael Savage left TRN and later signed with Cumulus. We reached out to TRN CEO Mark Masters Monday evening, about the Ingraham issue, and have not heard back.
