Stephen A. Smith Gets Show On Sirius

8-7-14

As Radio Ink reported last week, ESPN host Stephen A. Smith will be getting his own Sports Talk program on SiriusXM's Mad Dog Sports Radio (channel 85). The program will be produced by ESPN from ESPN Audio's headquarters in Bristol. The new two-hour daily show debuts Tuesday, Sept. 2, at 1 p.m. ET. Smith said, "Words can't express how excited I am to be going to SiriusXM. I've waited a long time for this. All I'm going to say is Sept. 2 can't arrive soon enough. So buckle up, because I'm coming!"

Traug Keller, ESPN senior vice president, production, business divisions, added, "This is an exciting new business opportunity for ESPN Audio. By creating outstanding exclusive audio content for SiriusXM, in this case The Stephen A. Smith Show, we are maximizing our presence on a variety of platforms that expand our reach and options for sports fans."

Smith just came off a one-week suspension after he made insensitive comments toward women shortly after the Ray Rice incident. Rice was caught on tape getting physical with his girlfriend (now wife) and suspended by the NFL for two games. Smith used the word "provoke," when talking about women in that type of violent situation, which lead to his suspension from both ESPN TV and radio for one week.

Liberty Wants Full Ownership of Sirius

1-6-13

Liberty took majority ownership of Sirius XM one year ago and is now taking steps toward full ownership. Shareholders of Sirius XM would convert their common stock into 0.076 of a new share of Liberty, immediately following a 2:1 distribution of a new Liberty Series C common stock to all Series A and B shareholders. The proposed exchange ratio values Sirius shares at approximately $3.68 per share based on Friday closing prices of Liberty?s Series A shares.

Liberty Chairman John Malone said, "The proposed transaction is an important step in the growth of both companies. It will enable us to focus our energies on the pursuit of new opportunities across the expanded portfolio of Liberty?s businesses and to optimize our capital structure to produce the maximum possible returns to all shareholders.?

Liberty CEO Greg Maffei said, "Our proposal will allow Sirius public shareholders to convert from a non-controlling stake in a subsidiary into a direct equity position in Liberty, the parent company. Sirius shareholders will continue to participate in Sirius? future prospects along with Liberty?s broader portfolio of businesses and opportunities. We believe the combined company will have better access to capital and all of Liberty?s shareholders ? both its current shareholders and the Sirius shareholders who become Liberty shareholders as a result of the proposed transaction ? will enjoy enhanced liquidity as shareholders of a $27 billion market capitalization company.?

Sirius Wants Chair at Dashboard Table

5-1-13

New CEO James Meyer says he's reprioritizing resources at SiriusXM with an eye on the connected Dashboard. He says embedded connectivity is giving automakers a lot of options and its very important SiriusXM participate in the rollout of that technology. "We are moving a lot of our resources toward making that goal happen." Meyer said a lot has been said about the threat to SiriusXM from streaming. "That also gives us opportunity. In-car apps will provide initial integration."

Meyer also said the biggest threat to SiriusXM is terrestrial radio. "The music only business is going to be a tough business." SiriusXM is getting ready to launch two new channels, Comedy Central Radio and Entertainment Weekly Radio. "Music, news, sports, comedy, niche programming...a broad away of content is what we offer, no music only."

More than 9,000 auto dealers now offer a free trial to SiriusXM when they sell a used car and Meyer says within a few years he expects more used cars to be sold with the service than new cars. Meyer says by the end of 2017 there should be 100 million cars on the road with SiriusXM and within ten years that number will be 150 million.

(AUDIO) Why I'm Leaving Radio For Sirius.

2-6-13

The news broke yesterday that after two decades on the radio, syndicated talker Michael Smerconish will be taking his show to Sirius Satellite radio. Starting April 15, Smerconish will be heard on the soon-to-be revamped P.O.T.U.S. channel. And while he was on in 80 markets, including Los Angeles (KFWB-AM), Philadelphia (WPHT-AM), and Dallas (KRLD-AM), it was a tall task getting that affiliate number to grow.

Smerconish's middle-of-the-road approach to politics was not heard on any Cumulus and Clear Channel radio stations. Smerconish's business manager and partner told Radio Ink last night, "Radio has a responsibility to deliver a variety of viewpoints. There's a need for Michael's voice on the airwaves and that voice was being rejected by a lot of broadcast radio stations." Smerconish says if, five years from now, talk radio hasn't changed, it's in a real dark spot. Here's what Smerconish had to say about why he's leaving radio for satellite?

Smerconish will air on Sirius weekdays from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. ET channel 124, SiriusXM's non-partisan channel dedicated to the "Politics of the United States." It will also replay during evening drive from 6:00 to 9:00 p.m. ET, and will be available on SiriusXM On Demand.

(3/7/2013 7:09:59 PM)
I listened to Smerconish once a few years ago in Philly. He talked for awhile about a bidet (toilet) he wanted to buy. OMG how boring.. I never listened again. Being a former radio air talent and writer I am inclined to listen longer. You have to be a masachist to listen to some talk radio. I would never wait an hour or more to talk to any host. But some people just love to hear themselves on the radio.. Listeners and hosts included.
(3/7/2013 1:04:00 PM)
A non-story. A gig is a gig. However one thing is clear: Laurence Glavin is a troll.
(3/7/2013 12:29:31 PM)

The real problem is that people in the US have been brainwashed into believing what Rush, Hannity, Savage and team say as being the voice of conservatism when in fact there is not conservative about what they say.

As a for instance, all of the above mentioned talk show hosts, support the US initiating the numerous recent wars in the middle east. Such thinking is of the "we are the policemen of the world, we make things right" mentality and need to be involved in everything everyone does. True conservatives like Ron Paul, oppose this policy.

The real problem again is far too many people in the US who claim to be conservative don't even know the conservative position. Instead they go along with whatever the establishment Republican Party says is their position.

As another example, take note of the huge number of conservatives that supported liberal, Mitt Romney. His liberal position regarding many issues should have awakened Republicans but it didn't because they have allowed the establishment Republican Party to dictate their mindset.

The establishment Republican Party is run by the largest corporations (bankster, oil, clear, etc) in the world. If you don't make their position your own, then you won't get a fair shake.

Michael Schmerconish is correct in leaving terrestrial radio but he doesn't seem to understand the reason behind all of it.

(3/7/2013 12:27:20 PM)
To the commenter who wrote "even less people will listen to you"; the correct word is "fewer". Right-wingers have trouble with the English language even though they constantly want to proclaim English as the only official language of the US.
(3/7/2013 12:16:37 PM)
Middle of the road means "no opinion" in my book . . . and no opinion mean no one is going to care. If no one listened for free, I don't see how his numbers will improve when people now have to pay for it. Best of luck.

How Much Should Sirius Pay in Royalties?

10-26-2012

Broadcast attorney David Oxenford (pictured) says the royalties that Sirius XM will pay to SoundExchange for the next 5 years will be decided by the Copyright Royalty Board in December. The CRB held an oral argument last week, where Sirius XM and SoundExchange presented their arguments as to what those royalties should be. Sirius wants to pay less and SoundExchange wants them to pay a lot more. Oxenford details how this upcoming SiriusXM decision will lay the groundwork for what happens to all Internet Radio Broadcasters.

Liberty Now At 49.5% Ownership of Sirius.

9-18-2012

An SEC filing shows that Liberty has converted around half of its preferred shares into common shares, diluting its ownership total just a bit. The recent filing also means that Liberty retains 3 of its 5 board seats, still giving it veto power. Liberty plans to take control of Sirius XM but has not officially announced what it will do with the company once it does. CEO Mel Karmazin has indicated he will stay on until the transfer of control is complete but is not willing to discuss a new deal until then. His contract expires at the end of 2012.

Liberty became Sirius' largest shareholder in 2009 after giving the company a $530 million loan to prevent it from going into bankruptcy. The transaction allowed Liberty to convert the loan into preferred shares, but a provision, which expired a few months ago, prevented the company from owning a stake of more than 49.5 percent of Sirius.

Liberty Purchases More Sirius Stock

9-6-2012

Last night Liberty Media filed another document with the SEC listing purchase dates of September 4th and September 5th for more Sirius XM stock. The filing says Liberty is purchasing another 5.5 million shares. Liberty CEO John Malone has made no secret of the fact that it wants to take control of Sirius XM by purchasing enough stock to become the majority shareholder. Two big questions; What will Liberty do with the company? And, what will Mel Karmazin do after his contract expires at the end of this year.

Is Mel Getting Ready to Leave Sirius?

8-30-2012

Let the speculation begin. The Sirius XM stock will be an intersting one to watch on Friday. The company announced that CEO Mel Karmazin "has adopted a trading plan" and will be selling 30 million shares, possibly by mid-September. How will the market react knowing that Karmazin's contract expires at the end of this year and with Liberty creeping closer to taking a majority position in the company. Karmazin briefly mentioned his contract on Sirius' Q2 conference call but he certainly did not comitt to returning. Officially from the company, the Karmazin trading plan "is intended to facilitate Mr. Karmazin's personal financial planning strategy of asset diversification and liquidity."
