FEMA Teams With Premiere On EAS

5-3-13

The Federal Emergency Management Agency announced a cooperative effort with Premiere Networks and private sector broadcasters that will provide an alternative method for radio stations to receive emergency information during a national emergency. Premiere would use its satellite program receivers in thousands of affiliate radio stations across the country as another tool for delivering national EAS messages. Affiliates would in turn broadcast the emergency messages to the public within its network.

President of Content and Affiliate Services for National Media Groups at Clear Channel, Julie Talbott, said, ?FEMA?s Emergency Alert System is one of the most important tools for preparing and notifying the public during times of emergency. We?re honored to work with FEMA to help distribute these potentially life-saving messages to U.S. citizens and strengthen disaster readiness on a national level.?

?This cooperative effort between FEMA and Premiere Networks is one of the latest initiatives to engage the private sector?s cooperation in raising community preparedness across the nation,? said Damon Penn, Assistant Administrator of FEMA?s National Continuity Program. ?We count on the broadcasting industry to alert and warn the public through the standard broadcast Emergency Alert System (EAS) including AM, FM, and satellite radio, as well as broadcast, cable, and satellite TV, if a national emergency occurs.?

Pittman Teams With Westergren to Lobby Congress

10-25-2012

A lobbying group called the Internet Radio Fairness Coalition has launched and it has Clear Channel CEO Bob Pittman and Pandora Founder Tim Westergren on the same team. Pittman has never been a big fan of the Pandora business model but in this case the Internet music service's millions of users will come in handy as both men lobby Congress for friendlier royalty rates. Pittman and Westergren are joined by 10 other organizations to form this coalition and push for pending legislation to lower royalty rates.

Founding members of the Coalition include 977 Music, AccuRadio, Clear Channel Media and Entertainment, Computer and Communications Industry Association (CCIA), Consumer Electronics Association (CEA), Digital Media Association (DiMA), Digitally Imported, Engine Advocacy, National Religious Broadcasters Music License Committee (NRBMLC), Pandora (NYSE: P), Radio Paradise, Salem Communications, and the Small Webcaster Alliance (SWA). The Coalition website is www.InternetRadioFairness.com.

Pittman said, ?We believe that market-based solutions are the way to go. But in the absence of these agreements, the CRB needs to have and consider more relevant information so they are better able to develop a rate structure that will lead to a healthy, sustainable Internet radio marketplace. This will enable artists to earn more and connect more with their fans, consumers to have more choices, and entrepreneurs to invent and invest in new services.?

Westergren added, ?Legislation that establishes a fair royalty rate setting-standard for Internet radio will drive investment in webcasting, which ultimately offers greater opportunities and more revenue for working artists,? said Pandora Founder and Chief Strategy Officer, Tim Westergren. ?Internet radio has been shown to help decrease music piracy and increase music sales. When the digital music sector is allowed to grow and innovate, everybody wins.?

The Coalition?s mission is to urge Congress to support legislation (The Internet Radio Fairness Act of 2012, or IRFA), aimed at bringing the royalty system for Internet radio into the 21st century -- creating a sustainable business model for the industry that gives consumers more choices and more products for listening to the music they love; enables artists to earn more money as Internet radio grows; creates a marketplace that will attract entrepreneurs to invest in new, innovative ways to deliver music to the public; and drives higher revenues for record labels.

The NAB wants to keep the the higher streaming rates because they have invested in iBiquity's fraud.

(AUDIO) Cumulus Teams With Radiate For Traffic

3-5-2012

Cumulus is teaming up with Radiate Media to launch a new traffic reporting service. It's called ?Right Now Traffic? and will launch on Cumulus stations in the top 75 U.S. markets beginning in April. Radiate was formed back in October of 2010 and CEO Chris Rothey says, in addition to teaming up with 750 Cumulus stations, his new traffic service will be made available to other stations as well. We spoke with Rothey last night about the deal and his company. You can listen to that interview here.

Listen to our interview with Radiate Media CEO Chris Rothey HERE

Cumulus CEO lew Dickey said, ?We?re excited about launching Right Now Traffic with Radiate Media. Americans are spending more than 1,000 hours per year in their cars. Our listeners, advertisers and network affiliates all demand accurate and timely traffic information, and this partnership enables us to address that need with a best in class service.? Cumulus also plans to make Right Now Traffic available to other stations. Right Now Traffic reports will be powered by government sensors, toll tag monitoring and billions of GPS data points. Cumulus says, the market for advertiser-sponsored traffic reports is estimated to be at least $300 million. The combined reach of the Cumulus and Radiate networks will be able to serve a significant majority of that market.

(3/5/2012 1:41:10 PM)
Good-luck with that one. MSN Direct dumped its traffic services, so no more for Clear Channel. Navteq just laid off 1,300 from its mapping services, too. Terrestrial radio traffic is being killed by the likes of Google Maps - no need for expensive in-dash nav systems. Hear that Bob Struble? LOL!

Aha Radio Teams With CBS For Content

1-10-2012

Aha and CBS Radio jointly announced a partnership that will bring CBS's stations to drivers and other users of the Aha Radio platform. The partnership allows Aha Radio to distribute CBS Radio content via mobile devices and directly into vehicles. CBS Radio joins other content already available on Aha including Slacker, Facebook, and Twitter. Aha has also recently signed content deals with NPR, Entertainment Radio Network, MOG, Rhapsody, and AOL SHOUTcast Radio, which will become available this year.

Honda and Subaru are currently working with Aha to integrate with the Aha platform starting with model year 2013 vehicles. Kenwood has also announced that it will begin shipping Aha-integrated aftermarket head units this Spring. Honda, Subaru and Kenwood customers will be able to access all of Aha's stations right from the car's infotainment system. Aha also announced partnerships with top content providers to expand Aha's platform to tens of thousands of personalized, web-enabled stations that cover everything from music, news and social streams to travel and audiobooks.

(1/10/2012 7:14:21 AM)
Garmin just laid off 1,300 employees, which uses HD Radio, and MSN Direct just terminated its traffic services for Clear Chanel HD Radio. Aha is a social app, so expensive navigation systems will fall to the wayside along with HD Radio.
