(TALENT) Get The Chair And Grow From There

7-3-2013

By Lisa Miller

Radio has always been a business of 12 chairs and 15 people. Qualified, tenured, earned, deserved, recognized, appropriate or not ? getting the chair in radio has never followed the protocol you might expect in more standard business practices. So when you get the opportunity to take the best job, with the best opportunity for success, don?t blow it because the market isn?t your favorite or the compensation package doesn?t live up to your expectations.

There are only a handful of stations that will reach number one in rank or revenue, and having the opportunity to hitch your wagon to one of those stations happens only if you?re lucky. Tom Murphy (now heard on KISN/Portland, OR) once told me, ?Always go to the best station. Don?t worry about the size of the market or how much it pays.? He was right. When a prospective employer in a major market is looking to hire on-air or off-air personnel, they look at the ratings and revenue of stations in smaller markets, and they?re often more comfortable hiring personnel from a top-ranked station. The general rule is that you?re a better bet coming from a top-ranked station in a smaller market than from the 10th- or 15th-ranked station in a larger market. Why? Because it?s presumed that you were instrumental in creating or maintaining the success of your station.

Recognizing a good situation is easier than you may think. Don?t be seduced by a set of call letters or the ?cool factor? of a particular city, and absolutely do not be lured by market rank. Almost every television anchor or reporter who currently works in market 30 or smaller has a ?top 10 market out? as part of their contract. I?m not sure where the misconception that being in a top 10 market is nirvana came from, but I know many professionals in the biggest markets who would love to go back to the medium or small market where they had the most success. Why? Because they were often happier there.

Select a station where there is potential for your professional growth. If market size matters to you (and as I?ve said, it shouldn?t) and you feel you?re on track to move up, remember that being at the number one station in Columbus will put you in a better position to jump to Chicago than being at the 15th-ranked station in Cleveland.

I have seen mediocre people hired merely because they came from a successful station and, conversely, some very talented people overlooked simply because they worked at an underachieving station. Management can justify hiring someone from a successful station because if it doesn?t work out, it?s not the manager?s fault ? the employee had the pedigree to make it reasonable to presume they?d be successful.

If you get that chair, make it work for you. Create new sources of revenue, become entrenched in the community, get involved with a charity that needs your talents, and make the most of yourself to help the station grow.

You have the opportunity, so don?t blow your chance. Don?t get involved with the politics (every station has them). Be an overachiever: Get the client everyone has failed to get, go to appearances when you?re not required to be there, create revenue-driven promotions, do whatever it takes to stand out and make a difference.

If management changes and they?re not the best, hang in there. Bad management usually won?t be around long, and you can?t let a minor and temporary change cause you to give up on your paradise. Don?t let a pesky coworker get under your skin, and don?t, for any reason, throw in the towel because you don?t get promoted in your time frame ? don?t be misled by some arbitrary idea that you should be a salesperson by the age of 25, or a sales manager by 30, or a general manager by 40, or promoted to morning host after doing afternoons for three years. Don?t start dwelling on the minutiae that take your focus off the prize. Forget the myths about radio, and focus on the strengths.

Set your goals, make them realistic, be patient, and when you arrive, make it your goal to keep the chair and grow ? or to move on, on your own timetable, to the next great opportunity you created by choosing the right stations.

Sirius Wants Chair at Dashboard Table

5-1-13

New CEO James Meyer says he's reprioritizing resources at SiriusXM with an eye on the connected Dashboard. He says embedded connectivity is giving automakers a lot of options and its very important SiriusXM participate in the rollout of that technology. "We are moving a lot of our resources toward making that goal happen." Meyer said a lot has been said about the threat to SiriusXM from streaming. "That also gives us opportunity. In-car apps will provide initial integration."

Meyer also said the biggest threat to SiriusXM is terrestrial radio. "The music only business is going to be a tough business." SiriusXM is getting ready to launch two new channels, Comedy Central Radio and Entertainment Weekly Radio. "Music, news, sports, comedy, niche programming...a broad away of content is what we offer, no music only."

More than 9,000 auto dealers now offer a free trial to SiriusXM when they sell a used car and Meyer says within a few years he expects more used cars to be sold with the service than new cars. Meyer says by the end of 2017 there should be 100 million cars on the road with SiriusXM and within ten years that number will be 150 million.

Former FCC Chair: The Name Redskins Obscene

4-8-13

In an opinion piece in the Washington Post, former FCC chairman Reed Hundt says its time the government put pressure on Washington Redskins owner Dan Snyder to change the name of his football team. "Congress has repeatedly passed laws and otherwise raised a ruckus about indecent language on the broadcast airwaves used for radio and television," he wrote.

Hundt writes, "Cultural standards evolve. The meaning of the public interest also, of course, evolves. Almost all of us adults who grew up as Washington football fans used, without thinking, a name for the hometown team that is now clearly inappropriate." If broadcasters follow their own tradition, they will insist that Snyder no longer put them in the intolerable position of using a derogatory term to describe his team. So, too, should the FCC applaud broadcasters for pursuing the name change." Read Hundt's piece HERE

Radio Ink is pleased and honored to announce that Clear Channel CEO Bob Pittman will serve as radio chair of Forecast 2013. The annual radio financial summit will be held in New York City at the Harvard Club on November 28, 2012, one week after Thanksgiving. Radio Ink Chairman and Publisher Eric Rhoads said, "Bob is driven to change radio and help take us to the highest possible level of success. His influence on the agenda at this year's Forecast will focus on improving this industry, making this one of the most important Forecast conferences in history." Pittman has topped Radio Ink's "40 Most Powerful People in Radio" list for the last two consecutive years.

Radio Ink EVP/Radio Deborah Parenti notes, "Forecast 2013 is our 10th annual summit and occurs in Radio Ink's 20th-anniversary year. Radio Ink's Forecast is the radio industry's exclusive financial conference, gathering radio owners, CEOs, CFOs, group executives, and managers with Wall Street and private equity investors and analysts to forecast the upcoming year. Well informed and noted economic, political, and media participants present trends, opportunities, projections, and analytical commentary on the state of business, especially as it impacts media. Now in its 10th year, Forecast has become the premium event in radio financial circles. The event is held at the Harvard Club in New York City and closed to the press.

Immediately following Forecast, Radio Ink's "40 Most Powerful People in Radio" are honored at an exclusive, invitation-only reception, also at the Harvard Club. Forecast attendees will get the exclusive opportunity to mingle with these industry luminaries. Only registered conference attendees are guaranteed invitations to this premier networking after-party. Attendance is limited to 200.

Listeners and advertisers, indeed. Is this not like asking Iran to chair a nuclear non-proliferation conference? The main topic of discussion: "How to get away with even less servicing of the marketplaces."

OK... One BIG problem-- The BIGGEST categories that count - average RADIO LISTENERS, and RADIO ADVERTISING CLIENTS
are not invited to this conference!!... Wow. ... With those two most important groups missing, one could argue that the conference will simply be industry "insiders" all just "speculating" with each other!

WTOP Reporter Shoved by Former City Council Chair

6-7-2012

Jim Farley jokes to Radio Ink that his reporters now want combat pay after Washington D.C. City Council Chairman Kwame Brown shoved his forearm into WTOP reporter Mark Seagraves' chest and pushed him up against a wall. Brown was asked a question about an FBI investigation into his campaigning. Brown asked his staff to remove Segraves. Brown later "winked and smiled" to Segraves in the chamber from the council dais.

Brown later apologized to Segraves for the incident, and brought him into his office where the two spoke for a few minutes. Brown explained the wink he gave Segraves earlier on Tuesday was due to "a contact lens problem."

Brown resigned this week

Caballero Honorary Chair of Hispanic Conference

12-13-2011
Radio Ink has announced that highly respected broadcaster Eduardo Caballero will serve as honorary chairman for the upcoming Hispanic radio conference being held in San Diego. Radio Ink V.P./GM Deborah Parenti said "We are extremely honored and proud to have Mr. Caballero as honorary chair of the Hispanic Radio Conference, His vast experience in all areas of Hispanic broadcasting, advertising and public service, will help insure a compelling, focused and exciting agenda for the 2012 Hispanic Radio Conference."

About the conference, Caballero said "this is the right moment for us to come together to address the challenges, trends, issues, and particularly the opportunities in front of Hispanic radio broadcasters across the country. It offers a unique chance to unite and exchange ideas targeted to radio and digital platforms. Because of its importance, we as an industry need to embrace this effort and make it successful so it can continue. The timing could not be better. The 2010 Census added an enormous volume of compelling statistics that irrefutably support what we have known for a long time: The United States is the second-largest Spanis -speaking nation in the world, a culturally diverse cohesive force, and the strongest Hispanic economy -- formed by major Hispanic radio listeners and heavy users of all types of digital and social media."

Radio Ink Hispanic Radio Conference is being held at the Hyatt Regency Mission Bay, San Diego March 21-22.

If Hispanic Christopher Columbus Discovered America--then Eduardo Caballero discovered National Business for Hispanic Radio & TV Stations in early 60's . Eduardo & his wife Rosa, Attorneys, escaped from Cuba to get to Florida. Got into radio sales--when all Hispanics were called names now not politically correct. Somehow Eduardo got into The National Sales Station Rep business. Built his own Rep firm. Found his client stations got screwed by Pulse, Hooper & Nielsen's methodology. Got laughed out of Ad Agencies.
So- Eduardo was really the first National Sales Rep in history--Gringo or Spanish-who consistently bypassed Ad Agencies to go direct to P& G--General Foods-- General Motors, etc. Eduardo not only taught them about the inherent values of Spanish formatted radio-TV stations--Eduardo actually taught them about radio.
Our Rep firm--Eastman Radio -competed against Eduardo . Finally we gave up and co brokered with Caballero Reps. If you can't beat 'em--join 'em. Eduardo is a true treasure who's never been awarded the tributes he so richly earned. --by the "General Market" broadcasters.

Arbitron Advisory Chair "Disappointed"

Tom Skinner, who is the Arbitron Radio Advisory Council Chairman, said he was disappointed that Arbitron did not have more information available to broadcasters on Project Leapfrog. Leapfrog is an experimental measurement approach that features a week-long, web/mobile based survey as the primary means of data collection, an alternative to the paper diary. A "proof-of-concept" test of Project Leapfrog was run in June 2010. The project was reviewed in May of this year and the advisory council was hoping to see results yesterday at a meeting in Chicago.

A weeklong Web and mobile survey is the primary means of collecting data in Project Leapfrog, though a paper diary will still be offered for respondents who don't have Web access or who prefer not to fill out an online survey. Skinner said our expectations were that we would have a full report and we only received half. Skinner said the council was disappointed it did not hear the audience responses to the new technology and Arbitron wants to work some more on the "black" representation. Skinner also says there was not any Hispanic representation. The council does not meet again until next year, however, a lot of work is now done virtually throughout the year.

On another note Don Benson from the Lincoln Financial Group becomes the Arbitron Radio Advisory Council Chairman starting in January.
