Conclave Names 2015 Rockwell Award Winners

The Conclave Learning Conference has announced its 2015 Rockwell Award Winners: NRG Media President/CEO Mary Quass, and Dan Vallie, founder of Vallie Richards Donovan Consulting and the National Radio Talent System. This year's Rockwell Awards will be presented during the Conclave's 40th anniversary celebration on July 16 and 17 in Minneapolis.

In making the announcement, Conclave Board of Directors Chair Lori Lewis commented: "The board and I couldn't agree more in honoring Mary Quass and Dan Vallie as this year's Rockwell Award recipients. Both Mary and Dan are role models in what success looks like. They help build on the future of our business by putting their employees first, and mentoring the young talent of today. We look forward to honoring them in July."

Since 1989, the Conclave has presented The Rockwell Award -- an annual lifetime achievement award -- to individuals of unquestioned accomplishment in the radio industry.

2015 Radio Mercury Award Finalists Announced

113 radio spots and campaigns have been named finalists for 2015 Radio Mercury Awards, which honors outstanding radio created by advertising agencies, production companies, radio stations, and students. iHeartMedia Creative Services lead this year's entries with eight nominations, with DDB Chicago close behind with five nominations. The 2015 Radio Mercury Awards ceremony will take place on June 3 in New York City. Additionally, Subway will be awarded as the Radio Marketer of the Year at the awards event.

NAB to Present Digital Leadership Award

The NAB announced the new NAB Digital Leadership Award will be presented at the 2015 NAB Show in Las Vegas. The award will be given to an individual at a broadcast station, group or network with a significant role in transforming a traditional broadcast business succeeding on digital media platforms.

The honoree will be recognized at the 2015 NAB Show Technology Luncheon in Las Vegas on April 15. Nominations for the first NAB Digital Leadership Award can be submitted through March 5. For more information is available here.

Radio ACM Award Nominees Announced

ACM released the full list of Radio Award and Songwriter of the Year nominees for the 50th Annual Academy of Country Music Awards, co-hosted this year by Blake Shelton and Luke Bryan. The telecast is slated for Sunday, April 19, 2015 at 8 p.m. ET, live, and delayed for the West Coast on CBS. The Radio and Songwriter awards will not be telecast due to  the time constraints of the televised broadcast. The radio awards will be presented during the annual Radio Winners Reception held the day prior to the ACM Awards telecast, on Saturday, April 18, 2015 in Arlington, Texas. The nominees for the Radio Awards are:

CRS To Award Lady A Humanitarian Award

The Country Radio Broadcasters have announced Lady Antebellum as the recipient of the CRS 2015 Artist Humanitarian Award which will be presented at CRS on February 25. CRS President Charlie Morgan said, "It is always humbling and inspiring to learn of the great work that country artists do behind the scenes to share the many blessings and gifts that come with fame and stardom. I would argue no format has a more generous group of artists than we do, and at CRS 2015 we will pay special tribute to one of the best, Lady Antebellum, with our Artist Humanitarian Award."

The CRB Artist Humanitarian Award was created in 1990 by the organization?s board to honor those country music artists who have exhibited exceptional humanitarian efforts during their career. Past recipients of the annual award have included Carrie Underwood, Rascal Flatts, Tim McGraw and Faith Hill, Trace Adkins, Randy Owen, Toby Keith, Brad Paisley, Brooks & Dunn, Reba, Vince Gill, Garth Brooks, and Charlie Daniels, among others.

Since the beginning of their career, Charles, Dave, and Hillary of Lady Antebellum have used their music and their likeness to make a difference in people?s lives. Whether it was their most recent week-long 7FOR7 campaign where they traveled across the country to surprise and fulfill seven wishes for seven fans in seven days, to taking on rebuilding a flood-damaged elementary school in Kingston Springs, or lifting the spirits of the community of Henryville, Indiana by performing at their high school after tornadoes ravaged the town, raising more than $240,000 for them, to raising money for at-risk youth.

In December of 2012, Lady Antebellum established LadyAID, through which they continue to raise money and support kids in need on a local, national, and global level through Vanderbilt Children?s Hospital, St. Jude Children?s Research Hospital, Children?s Miracle Network, and myLIFEspeaks. The morning show hosts, PDs, and OM/GMs in the seminar know how hard it can be to take a group of creative people and get them to work towards one goal. They will find out what Lady Antebellum does to achieve this every day.

CRB To Give Smulyan Humanitarian Award

In February, the Country Radio Broadcasters will present Emmis CEO Jeff Smulyan with the 2015 Tom Rivers Humanitarian Award at the Country Radio Seminar. The award recognizes an individual in the Country radio industry who has displayed a "magnanimous spirit of caring and generosity in service to their community." The award is named in honor of CRB board member Tom Rivers, who died in 2004 at age 38 of bronchial asthma. Rivers was known for his work at WQYK in Tampa and WUSN in Chicago. He was also highly regarded for his public service. CRS Executive Director Bill Mayne said, "Jeff Smulyan epitomizes the definition of the Tom Rivers Humanitarian award. His commitment to broadcasting, service to community, and personal giving is recognized across our industry. It is our privilege to recognize his accomplishments in this arena."

Jeff Smulyan has supported numerous community organizations, including the Indianapolis Hebrew Congregation, the Bureau of Jewish Education (the Smulyan/Stolkin Education Center), Beth El Zedeck (Smulyan Lecture Series, whose speakers have included Bill Clinton and Al Gore), North Central High School, Academy Plus, Cathedral High School (the Smulyan Family Theatre), the Indianapolis Zoo (Samantha Smulyan Slash Zone), the International School, United Way, Big Brothers/Big Sisters, Planned Parenthood, the Broadcasters Foundation, his alma mater, USC, and a host of other important Indiana-based organizations. He is currently working with Ball State, the Indianapolis Zoo, Orchard School, and Big Brothers/Big Sisters on further gifts.

He has served as board president of Central Indiana Corporate Partnership, on the host committee of Indianapolis? Super Bowl bid, and led fundraising efforts at the Humane Society, Indianapolis Arts Council, Fairbanks Hospital, PlayBall Indiana, and the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society. Under Smulyan?s direction, Emmis has contributed millions through cash and in-kind donations, sponsorships, and other fundraising efforts. NABEF Honors GM With Corporate Leadership Award

The NAB Education Foundation is set to present its Corporate Leadership Award to General Motors during the 16th annual Celebration of Service to America Awards. The award is given each year to a non-broadcast business that "exemplifies an extraordinary focus on community service and corporate social responsibility."

NABEF President Marcellus Alexander said, "Through strong, ongoing support of education, health, community development, and environmental initiatives, General Motors and the General Motors Foundation have made a positive impact on American society."

The GM Foundation has granted more than $265 million in support of various nonprofits since it was founded in 1976.

GM SVP/Global Public Policy and Communications and GM Foundation Chair Selim Bingol said, "The GM Foundation is dedicated to making life better for communities across the U.S., and for the people who live there. We thank NABEF for this special recognition and promise to continue trying to make a difference in the lives of Americans."

The Celebration of Service to America Awards will be held June 17 at the National Building Museum in Washington, DC.

2013 Radio Ink Lifetime Leadership Award Winner -- James B. Thompson

Jim Thompson, also known as ?The Mayor,? has had an outstanding broadcast career, one that continues to this day. Thompson, currently president of the Broadcasters Foundation of America, started his broadcasting run in television in 1971, as an AE at WJZ-TV. His TV career would include GSM, NSM, and VP and GM posts at KYW in Philadelphia. Thompson made the jump to radio in 1989 when he took the job as president and CEO of Group W Radio, which at the time was the largest non-network station group and the second-largest radio company in the United States. Group W had all-News radio stations in New York, Philadelphia, Chicago, and Los Angeles, as well as AOR, Country, and AC formats in major markets. After spending three years as president of Westinghouse Radio, Thompson and partner Mike Craven launched Liberty Broadcasting. That company started with one station, heritage Long Island Rocker WBAB, but within a few short years, it had grown to 19 stations. Liberty was purchased by Bob Sillerman?s SFX in 1996.

Craven says his close friend Jim Thompson is as genuine as they get. ?He?s honest, and he?s very loyal to those he considers friends. His job at the Broadcasters Foundation is made much easier by the fact that he relates to people. And the environment he?s operating in is successful because Jim Thompson is there doing it. People are willing to listen to him, and they contribute because of his character and his honesty. The Broadcasters Foundation is much better off today because Jim Thompson is there.? When Thompson was knee-deep in radio, he says the industry was taking in $20 billion a year of real money. And, while he says he would definitely be willing to get back into radio ownership, his primary focus now is on helping broadcasters through the Broadcasters Foundation.

Greater Media Chairman/CEO Peter Smyth says, ?Jim Thompson is truly a class act. His commitment to the women and men of the radio industry is unparalleled. He is radio?s true ambassador ? a kind, caring, and dedicated leader. I cannot think of a more appropriate person to receive the Lifetime Leadership Award than Jim. Our industry is better because of people like Jim Thompson.?

Broadcasters, like every other segment of society, experience hard times. A lost job. An illness that requires expensive medical care. An unexpected life tragedy. Thompson?s job is to find those broadcasters and help them. He?s set a goal of giving out $1 million in one year to those in need. In order to do that, he?ll need to spend a lot of time raising money and expend a lot of effort finding those broadcasters who need help. Richard A. Foreman Associates President Richard Foreman says of his friend, ?If it?s true that in the end we?re all judged by the level we give back ? helping others ? then Jim Thompson has provided us all with a path to follow. His caring and dedication to the Broadcasters Foundation of America, and total commitment to those it serves, is exemplary.?

I've known Jim for probably 30 years. Back to the Group W days. And I've been involved with him at the Foundation for a long time. Jim is one of the gems of our industry, and he deserves all the praise he's getting. He and Carl Butrum run a great organization, and I'm proud to count him as a friend. Bravo!

Trautmann Wins Engineering Award

Dial Global Chief Technology Officer Conrad Trautmann has been named ?Chapter Engineer of the Year? by the Society of Broadcast Engineers? Chapter 15, which serves the New York City metro area. Trautmann is the first recipient of this new award, which recognizes the efforts of a specific individual who best furthers the goals and objectives of their SBE chapter and provides an outstanding example of local/regional leadership and ethics.

Trautmann oversees the company?s broadcast engineering, program distribution, back-office IT, and software development. He is a nationally-recognized and respected leader in the broadcast engineering field, with prior senior engineering positions at Dial Global, Westwood One, Metro Networks, Cox Radio, and Chancellor Media. He has managed and supervised the creation and construction of world-class studios in broadcast facilities around the country.

NABOB and the Power of Urban Radio Forum have announcement that Acting FCC Chairwoman Mignon Clyburn will receive the NABOB-PUR Leadership Award during the 37th Annual NABOB Fall Conference and 13th Annual Power of Urban Radio Forum, being held October 2-4, in Washington, DC.

Total Traffic Wins Telematics Award

McConnell Wins Career Achievement Award

WTOP Radio?s Capitol Hill correspondent, Dave McConnell, has been named by the Radio & Television Correspondents? Association as the first-ever recipient of the ?Career Achievement Award for Distinguished Reporting on Congress.? This is a new award established by the RTCA to honor those journalists who represent career achievement and dedication to Congressional coverage. The award further highlights House and Senate reporting that is respected and considered a model for all. The RTCA presented the honor Wednesday night in Washington, D.C.

McConnell, a veteran journalist with more than 50 years of reporting in Washington, has covered decades of presidential elections, White House administrations, Watergate, and more. He joined WTOP in 1965 and became the station?s full-time Capitol Hill correspondent in 1981, a position which he still holds today. McConnell is a Maryland native and has received numerous awards over the years, including an A.I.R. ?Lifetime Achievement Award? and a Society of Professional Journalists ?Hall of Fame Award.?

2013 Medallas de Cortez Award Winners

Last night Radio Ink announced the winners of the 2013 Medallas de Cortez awards for excellence in Hispanic radio. The awards were sponsored by McGavren Guild Media and presented by President of McGavren Guild Lisa Sirotka-Sonnenklar and Radio Ink Publisher Eric Rhoads. The Medallas de Cortez awards were created by Radio Ink magazine to recognize outstanding achievements and leadership in the Hispanic radio marketplace. They were named after Raoul Cortez, a pioneer in Hispanic radio in America; his image appears on the medal presented to winners in each category.

Liberman Brothers Win Lifetime Leadership Award

The Radio Ink Medallas de Cortez award for Lifetime Leadership was given to three Hispanic radio pioneers, the Liberman brothers: Elias, Jose and Julio. The Liberman brothers got into the radio industry in the 1960's after finding themselves buying so much radio time to move products from their pharmaceutical company that they decided to make radio their career. They initially purchased XEGM in Tijuana and in 1974 purchased KLVE in L.A. for $2 million. They flipped that station?s format to make it the first Spanish-language FM in the city and the second in the United States. The company added KTNQ-AM a few years later. Today, Elias and Julio are retired. Jose and his son Lenard started and continue to operate Liberman Broadcasting. Julio's son, Jeffery Liberman, also followed his father's footsteps and serves as the COO of Entravision Communications.

Stevie Wonder To Receive Leadership Award

Singer-songwriter Stevie Wonder will receive the 2013 Service to America Leadership Award from the NAB Education Foundation for his work as an "activist, messenger of peace, and his dedication to helping people with disabilities, and children and families in need." Wonder will receive the award at NABEF's Celebration of Service to America Gala on June 3.

"Stevie Wonder has touched millions of lives worldwide through his musical genius and through his tireless contributions as a humanitarian,"said NABEF President Marcellus Alexander. "It is for his extraordinary efforts on behalf of those in need that we proudly honor him with this prestigious award."

The Service to America Leadership Award recognizes individuals and organizations responsible for improving the lives of others through extraordinary public service. Considered NABEF's highest individual honor, the award will be presented during the Celebration of Service to America Gala held Monday, June 3 at the Walter E. Washington Convention Center in Washington D.C.
