Conclave Names 2015 Rockwell Award Winners

The Conclave Learning Conference has announced its 2015 Rockwell Award Winners: NRG Media President/CEO Mary Quass, and Dan Vallie, founder of Vallie Richards Donovan Consulting and the National Radio Talent System. This year's Rockwell Awards will be presented during the Conclave's 40th anniversary celebration on July 16 and 17 in Minneapolis.

In making the announcement, Conclave Board of Directors Chair Lori Lewis commented: "The board and I couldn't agree more in honoring Mary Quass and Dan Vallie as this year's Rockwell Award recipients. Both Mary and Dan are role models in what success looks like. They help build on the future of our business by putting their employees first, and mentoring the young talent of today. We look forward to honoring them in July."

Since 1989, the Conclave has presented The Rockwell Award -- an annual lifetime achievement award -- to individuals of unquestioned accomplishment in the radio industry.

Saga Names Goldstein Replacement

On Thursday, Saga Communications announced that Bob Lawrence would be joining the company as the new Vice President and Group Program Director. Lawrence replaces Steve Goldstein, who exited at the end of March to launch his own digital audio company. Lawrence most recently served as President and CEO of San Diego-based radio research/branding firm Pinnacle Media Worldwide.
Saga CEO Ed Christian said, "We had excellent candidates express interest in the position of Vice President and Group Program Director for Saga. We have worked with Bob Lawrence and Pinnacle for years and have always been impressed with his radio knowledge, analysis, and solutions to problems. He already understands the Saga culture and this will be a seamless transition for him and us. I welcome Bob as a member of our team."

ASCAP Names New Chief Strategist

ASCAP has appointed digital strategist Alice Kim as its new chief strategy and development officer. Reporting to ASCAP CEO Elizabeth Matthews, Kim will oversee strategy, business development, product development, and administration services. Kim has been working in digital media for almost 20 years, most recently as a founder and principal for DigiConsult, a consulting practice providing strategic services to media clients focused on identifying and evaluating digital opportunities.CEO Matthews said in the announcement: "Alice has deep expertise of consumer behavior, trends in digital content adoption, and monetization models. She is uniquely positioned to help us harness our assets for the benefit of our songwriters, composers, and publishers, as well as our licensing partners, as we move into a world of increased data transparency and efficiency." Kim added: "I am excited to join the ASCAP executive team to develop and launch new ways of adding value to all of ASCAP's stakeholders who benefit from our collective licensing and efficient distribution model."

Adams Radio Delmarva Names New GSM

Patricia Ilczuk-Lavanceau is the new GSM for Adams Radio of Delmarva. The Adams cluster Ilczuk-Lavanceau is now responsible to generate revenue for includes "OC104," "93.5 The Beach," "Big Classic Rock 98.5/107.7," "100.3 Juan-FM," and WJWL/WJWK-AM. Ilczuk-Lavanceau most recently spent 15 years working in sales for Comcast in the Delmarva area.Adams Radio Group Market Manager Phil LoCascio said, "Patricia is the perfect person to lead our team to new heights. Her relationships in this market are second to none. I can't wait to work with her and superserve our current and future clients. That, and learn how to pronounce her last name!"

Westwood One News Names News Anchors

11-4-14

Four news anchors have been added to the Westwood One roster, a new news product launching at the end of the year. Dirk Van, Molly Paige, Evan Haning, and Barbara Kusak will be behind the mic when the service launches. Van will cover morning drive, Hanning is the mid-day host, and Kusak and Paige will anchor PM drive and evenings. Stations have the option to select one- to five-minute newscasts so they can integrate network news with their local operation. Here are more details on the new anchors...

Dirk Van is the host of Westwood One's First Light and The Week in Review and previously anchored newscasts for NBC News Radio. He was also news director at WGCH, Greenwich, CT and WHN in New York and a reporter for WCBS. Van is now in his 25th year at the helm of First Light.

Molly Paige is celebrating her two-year anniversary with Westwood One's news operation in Washington, DC.  For most of her career, Molly has been a news director and/or anchor at multiple stations in L.A, including KCBS, KRLA and KABC. Most recently, Molly has been an anchor/writer and producer for NBC News Radio and regular substitute host for Jim Bohannon on America in the Morning.

Evan Haning has been on the air in Washington, DC for 30 years. For nearly a decade, he was a reporter and anchor for WTOP. Most recently, he anchored afternoon drive for CBS's WNEW-FM since it launched in 2012. 

Barbara Kusak got her start in news in Detroit. She was a reporter and Sunday talk show interviewer and producer at WCSX. She went on to work for the CBS all-news station WWJ as an anchor and reporter. Barbara ventured into TV as a writer at MSNBC in New York City and then served as an anchor and writer for Metro Networks. Later she worked for Fox News Channel as an associate producer and at 1010 WINS as a writer and assignment editor. A family move took her west, where she was a reporter and anchor, helping to launch all news KDWN in Las Vegas.

Alpha Media Names Davis Promotions Director

Alpha Media Richmond has brought in Rachel Davis from Albany Broadcasting (NY) to be its promotions director for the Richmond cluster, including 98.9 Liberty (WWLB-FM), Big Oldies 107.3 (WBBT-FM), 93.1 The Wolf (WLFV-FM), and WARV-FM.

Prior to working with Albany broadcasting, Davis received a Bachelor of Arts in Music Industry from the University of New Haven and has worked with Universal Music Group?s Decca Label Group in New York. She has also
spent four years working with the event staff of the Albany Devils, an AHL affiliate of the New Jersey Devils.

?I am very excited to join the Richmond team!? said Davis. ?The chance to work, grow, and learn with Alpha Media is an opportunity too good to pass up. I can't wait to get started.?

Cumulus Names Steve Shaw President of Westwood One

Shaw is currently Senior Vice President of Cumulus National Sales, a position he has held since March, 2013. Shaw will expand his role as head of national spot sales for Cumulus? owned-and-operated stations to include all national and digital sales for Westwood One. In Steve?s new role he will oversee Westwood One Networks, Westwood One Sports, and Westwood One Digital, including Rdio and Cumulus National Sales, which will be renamed Westwood One Media Group. Shaw was previously President of Katz Radio Group and President of Cox Digital Solutions.

Lew Dickey, Chief Executive Officer of Cumulus, said: ?Steve will drive the integration of our large stable of national media assets and advertising products under the Westwood One brand. CCM+E Names O'Donnell PD in Springfield

Clear Channel Springfield (Mass.) says Terry O?Donnell will become the new PD and Operations Manager as of May 12. O?Donnell will oversee all programming and operations for the three Clear Channel Springfield stations (WHYN-AM/FM and WRNX-FM). He will join the Springfield cluster from Clear Channel Poughkeepsie, where he was PD.

KVIL Names Jay Michaels PD

Michaels was most recently at Clear Channel's KDMX-FM and KDGE-FM, also in Dallas, where he was PD. Michaels (pictured) will report to Senior VP/Market Manager for CBS Radio Dallas-Ft. Worth Brian Purdy, who said KVIL is on a new, strategic path. ?We?re entrusting Jay with these iconic call letters. I?m confident that he will build upon the foundation which has been laid by Ron Harrell (CBS Radio Dallas-Fort Worth vice president of music programming), who can now focus exclusively on KLUV and Jack FM. We couldn?t ask for a stronger team to guide our music stations in Dallas-Fort Worth.?
In addition to programming KDMX-FM and KDGE-FM in Dallas, Michaels has also worked as operations director for WROX-FM and WUSH-FM in Norfolk. He has also worked in Los Angeles (KYSR-FM), Houston (KRBE-FM), and Austin, Texas (KHFI-FM and KDHT-FM).

Sun Names Gina Suarez Manager Of Affiliate Sales

Sun Broadcast Group, Inc. announced today that Gina Suarez has joined the company, effective immediately, as Manager of Affiliate Sales. In this new position based at Sun's New York City office, Suarez will report to Nick DeGregorio, VP Programming and Affiliate Sales.

As Manager of Affiliate Sales, Suarez will lead and supervise the affiliate strategy for The Marilu Henner Show and will work with all affiliate stations to promote and improve Sun's burgeoning group of products and services.

"As soon as we met Gina, we knew she was a perfect fit," DeGregorio said. "We wanted her enthusiasm and professionalism to be a part of the Sun Broadcast Group family. Gina is a master in managing relationships and is immediately a cornerstone of our growing affiliate sales team."

Harris Names Gargiulo President Of Global Sales

Harris Broadcast has appointed Pablo Gargiulo as President of Global Sales. Gargiulo will be responsible for leading a newly created global sales organization, which spans 140 countries and 3,000 customers. The Harris sales organization is organized into four regions ? North America; Central/Latin America; Europe, the Middle East, and Africa; and South Asia/North Asia.

Subsequently, the company has named the following Harris Broadcast sales executives to lead the four regions:
North America: Chris Ziemer
Central and Latin America: Nahuel Villegas
Europe, the Middle East, and Africa: Mathias Eckert
Asia: Joe Khodeir and JiShun Mei

NPR Names Paul Haaga Acting CEO

9-13-13

The NPR board of directors announced today that Paul Haaga will serve as Acting President and CEO of NPR as of September 30. Haaga has served on the board since 2011, most recently as vice chair of the board and chair of its finance committee. Haaga will succeed NPR President and CEO Gary Knell, who recently resigned to become president and CEO of the National Geographic Society. NPR has appointed a search committee, co-chaired by board members Florence Rogers, president and GM, Nevada Public Radio, and John Wotowicz, managing partner, Concentric Capital, to lead the search.

Beasley Names Stacey Sedbrook VP Of Digital

Sedbrook moves to Beasley HQ in Naples from Boston where she was Senior Director of Digital Sales and Operations for Wicked Local-Gatehouse Media. She's also worked as Gannett's VP of Local Digital, The Dallas Morning News? Director of Sales Training, The Houston Chronicle?s Director of Online Sales, Marketing and Product Development, and the Denver Newspaper Agency?s Director of New Media. She also started her own consulting business.

Sedbrook said, ?Radio is an industry that I?ve been watching closely. To join a company like Beasley, one that understands that digital and radio are converging at a faster pace than ever before, is a tremendous opportunity. CMG San Antonio Names Miles New Morning Man

Jeff Miles gets the gig at KCYY-FM as of August 5 and his show wil be called ?Miles in the Morning.? Miles was born and raised close to Waco, Texas, and was later based at Ft. Sam Houston in San Antonio as an army medic trainee. Miles has worked in radio in Dallas, New York and most recently Atlanta. Market Manager Dan Lawrie said, ?I think San Antonio radio listeners will find ?Miles in the Morning? to be a fun and upbeat way to get their day started. It?s great to have someone of Jeff?s caliber on the Y100 Team.?

Townsquare Names Gaines Ops Manager In Texas

Scott Gaines is the new operations manager in Tyler/Longview, Texas, where Townsquare has four stations (KNUE, KISX, KKTX, and KTYL). Gaines most recently served as Dial Global?s morning show host of Country Today and Country Today Gold. Market Manager Johnny Lathrop said, ?Scott?s background and passion for the business was a perfect fit for what we wanted in Tyler-Longview to grow our heritage brands. We?re excited to get him in the building."

Gaines said, ?I couldn't be more excited to take on this new challenge as the Operations Manager at Townsquare Tyler-Longview. Harris Names Charlie Vogt CEO

7-9-13

As expected, Harris has appointed Charlie Vogt as CEO, effective immediately. Vogt joins Harris Broadcast following nine years as president and CEO of GENBAND where that company made six acquisitions, including Tekelec SSG, NextPoint Networks, and Nortel?s VoIP business. As a result of those purchases, GENBAND became number one in VoIP and delivered a compound annual growth rate of ~100 percent during his tenure. Vogt succeeds Harris Morris.

Vogel said, ?The radio and TV broadcasting industry is embarking on a significant transformation from digital to IP. Charlie was a natural choice as his IP domain knowledge and experience gained while assisting global service providers and cable operators transition to IP has uniquely prepared him to lead the company as this industry undergoes a similar trajectory. We thank Harris Morris for his contributions in guiding Harris Broadcast as we acquired the business and transitioned the company to independence. We wish him well as he pursues new opportunities.?

Clear Channel Seattle Names Perez VP/Sales

Katerina  Perez has been with Clear Channel for seven years. Most recently as Market President for Clear Channel Norfolk. She's also held leadership and sales positions throughout Florida's markets, including Miami, West Palm Beach, and the Florida Keys, as well as in Norfolk, VA. She'll take over as VP of Sales for Clear Channel's seven stations in the Seattle market starting August 1.

Clyburn Names Ratcliffe Acting Enforcement Chief

FCC Acting Chairwoman Mignon Clyburn announced Robert Ratcliffe will serve as Acting Chief of the FCC?s Enforcement Bureau. Ratcliffe currently serves as Deputy Chief of the Media Bureau. The previous Chief, Michele Ellison, was recently named Chief of Staff. Ratcliffe has worked at the FCC for more than 35 years, including tenures as the Acting Chief of the Media Bureau in 2009 and as Deputy Chief of the Enforcement Bureau from 2006 until 2009. 

Ratcliffe also served as interim media advisor to former FCC Chairman Alfred C. Sikes and held various policy positions in the former Mass Media Bureau, including Deputy Chief of the Bureau and Assistant Chief of the Policy and Rules and Video Services Divisions.  He began his career at the FCC in the original Cable Television Bureau, holding a variety of positions, including Chief of the Policy Review & Development Division.

Dial Global Names Albee CMO

Former Conde Nast exec Christina Albee is joining Dial Global as its chief marketing officer. In the newly created post, she'll be overseeing the conception and execution of DG's advertising, marketing, and communications, working out of New York and reporting to CEO Paul Caine.

"We're committed to investing in top talent who will be an integral and critical part of our path to success," Caine said. "That's why I am so thrilled to have Christina on board. I have known her for many years. She's a creative, warm, loyal, and supportive co-worker; she will be a huge enhancement to our powerhouse marketing group."

Albee arrives at Dial Global from Conde Nast, where she oversaw digital division The Studio at Conde Nast and supervised event marketing, strategic alliances, and operations at Conde Nast Media Group. Before that she was Conde Nast Media Group's senior executive director, handling corporate integrated and digital sales and marketing initiatives. She's also served as associate publisher at Style.com and Time Inc.'s In Style Weddings and helped launch brands including People en Espanol and In Style.

Albee said, "I look forward to working closely with Paul Caine to innovate and advance our marketing initiatives surrounding Dial Global's premium programming and unique assets.There's an incredible amount of opportunity to redefine the category and I'm happy to be a part of Dial Global's extremely smart team at the forefront of this industry."
