Emmis' Texas Monthly Sues New York Times

4-12-14

Bloomberg has the details of the lawsuit which says Texas Monthly sued the paper for $1 million over the hiring of its top editor to join the newspaper?s magazine division before his contract expired. According to Bloomberg, Ian Arnold, Emmis?s general counsel, told Times managing editor Dean Baquet that ?Texas Monthly expected to be compensated? for the cost of finding a replacement editor if Jake Silverstein was hired away before his contract expired in February 2015. ?Despite Baquet?s assurances,? the Times didn?t notify Texas Monthly and the magazine learned of the hiring from Silverstein just before the newspaper announced it on March 28, according to the lawsuit.

News 92's Martinez Goes Into Texas Hall

8-2-13
Reporter and on-air personality Martha Martinez is headed for the Texas Radio Hall of Fame. Martinez was known to many as ?The News Muchacha? when she worked alongside Texas Radio Hall of Famer?s Mark Stevens and Jim Pruett on KLOL in Houston, as well as KEGL in Dallas. In a time when female news anchors were limited to fluff or puff, Martha strove to maintain the highest of  journalistic integrity ? even in a studio full of ?Bad Boys.?
Born in San Antonio and a seventh-generation Texan, Martinez attended San Antonio College and Trinity University, majoring in Psychology and Radio, Television and Film. Martinez was first hired by Programmer Woody Roberts at KEXL-FM in San Antonio, where she worked 10p-2a and served as Music Director for the AOR leader. Roberts has pointed out that Martinez was the first Hispanic female on the air fulltime in the market. When KEXL?s format was changed and the staff replaced, Martinez was moved to sister station KITE-AM, where she began what has become a 35 year career in News and Information.
In 1983, Martinez was first linked with the infamous ?Bad Boys? of Radio, Stevens and Pruett, at KEGL-FM, and moved with them to Houston?s legendary Rocker, KLOL-FM in 1986. In 1996, she was fortunate enough to have been included in the lineup of the first All News Channel on the FM band, KEWS in Dallas?the brainchild of CBS Chief Les Moonves. A tragic antenna accident brought about the untimely end of KEWS, but Martinez was moved into the lineup at sister station KYNG-FM, the first ?Young Country? in the nation, where she remained until that station?s format was replaced with a ?Rock Talk? format.
After a tenure with Mobility Technologies? Traffic Dot Com, which gave her an opportunity to work as a traffic reporter with Terry Dorsey and Hawkeye at KSCS-FM, Martinez once again was blessed with the chance to work at KFNC in Houston, hired by Laurie Kendrick as part of a stellar team at the FM News Channel owned by Cumulus. For two and a half more years, Martinez worked for Navteq Traffic before she joined the News 92 FM

University of Texas Purchases KXBT For $6 Million

8-23-2012

KXBT-FM was once part of Border Media Partners, before it went through a restructuring and Larry Patrick was appointed the trustee. Today Patrick announced that the university has agreed to purchase the Austin station for $6 million. Back in 2009, Border Media Partners had 29 stations which were taken over by its lenders. Most of the stations aired Spanish-language formats.

Here's what the university posted on its website about the sale:

"New programming will begin on KUTX 98.9 FM and KUT 90.5 FM sometime this fall, following Federal Communications Commission (FCC) approval. Differentiating KUT?s news and music services across two stations is consistent with our strategic plan to double impact by 2020 and contribute to the long-term public service and sustainability of KUT," said Stewart Vanderwilt, director and general manager of KUT Public Radio. "The new KUT Public Media Studios ? with their increased production capacity, public spaces and direct audience interaction ? are the foundation of this strategic direction."
KUTX 98.9 will feature a public radio-style music format with diverse playlists covering the broad spectrum of music that makes Austin a global music destination. Programming will include many of KUT's existing music programs along with interviews, in-studio performances, the music journalism program "Texas Music Matters" and local arts-related news and commentary. Additionally, the all-music station will provide a high-profile platform for promoting and sharing content from the new KUT Public Media Studios' Performance Studio 1A and the KUT-operated Cactus Cafe.
KUT 90.5 FM, NPR and Austin News from the Capital of Texas will continue to broadcast national news and information programming, including NPR's "Morning Edition" and "All Things Considered," "Fresh Air," "Wait, Wait ? Don't Tell Me," "A Prairie Home Companion," and "This American Life," among other national and local programs. The new dedicated format will enable KUT to add additional national news programs and enable KUT's award-winning news team to provide a deeper level of context and a broader forum for the voices shaping Central Texas.
"Austin is one of only two state capitals in a major market without a full-time news and information public radio station," continued Vanderwilt. "Austin has all the demographic and social attributes ? high levels of education, political engagement, civic participation and a strong sense of place ? needed for a full-time public radio news station to thrive."
KUT and the University of Texas at Austin are purchasing the station from the Border Media Business Trust in a deal brokered by Public Radio Capital, an independent nonprofit organized to support the growth of public stations throughout the country, for $6 million. No tuition or taxpayer money will be used for the purchase.
KUTX 98.9 FM will provide roughly the same five-county metro-area coverage as KUT 90.5 FM.

NextMedia Texas Brightening Up The Holidays

12-16-2011

NextMedia's KLAK-FM is teaming up with the The McKinney Police Association to disperse of more than 500 toys to several local charities in the community, just in time for Christmas. The association handed off 400 toys to KLAK radio for its Angels of Care charity drive. KLAK promotions director Laura Villa said its share of toys will be given to families whose children are suffering from disabilities and are receiving care through Angels of Care Pediatric Home Health. The toys were delivered during the radio station's "Calling All Angels" marathon, which encouraged listener donations and provided information about the second annual charity drive, which runs through December 21st.

"It's an amazing feeling" Villa added. "We're grateful to everyone who has donated. As a radio station, we have a voice for these families and our community has always helped us whenever we needed it. These toys are great because now more people can focus on donating the things we need like coats, socks and underwear and things like that."

The toys were collected over the past two weekends at a softball tournament. One of the requirements for being able to play in the softball tournament is to bring at least one toy donation. One team in particular brought a trailer full of toys and bicycles and proved that a sporting event can be an effective way to get everyone involved, Butz said.

Lets Help A Friend. Emmis Engineer Loses Everything in Texas Fire

Texas is a state in desperate need of rain. In yet another Mother Nature twist of irony, the recent tropical storm that dropped buckets of rain on the gulf coast could be the culprit of the fires in Texas. The back end of the storm was empty of precipitation, however the heavy winds knocked power lines onto the wickedly dry Texas terrain causing fires to flare up in many areas. Communities around Austin were losing homes the fire raged so fiercely. Well over 1,000 houses were taken down by blaze. In the radio family, Emmis broadcast engineer Duncan Black lost his home and a car in the community of Bastrop.

Radio Ink and the Radio Industry can help Duncan as he works through a nightmare none of us would ever want to go through. Radio Ink has set up a secure PayPal account to make donations to Duncan and his family. 100% of what you donate will be given to Duncan. We hope you can help by clicking on the link at the end of this story. No donation is too small. A lot of small donations will add up to a lot of help.

If you have any trouble with the PayPal link below please e-mail me and I can send you a direct link. edryan@radioink.com. And thank you for helping.

Texas Station Fined $25G For Public File and Studio Staffing

Jne 30, 2011

Vision Latina's KBPO in Port Neches, TX receives the big fine for failing to maintain a main studio with a meaningful staff and management presence; and failing to maintain a complete public file. The incidents date back to December of 2010 when an FCC agent went to the station several times and each time the station was locked and there was no sign of any employees. About a week later an employee told the inspector his boss was in Mexico and would be back in a week. The employee had no idea where to find the public file.

A week later the agent returned again only to be told the owner would now not be back from Mexico for another month. This time the employees refused to show the agent the public file. And again no luck finding a current public file. So, repeated offenses nets the station a hefty $25,000 fine that they have 30 days to respond to.
