The Story Behind Brian "Big Bear" Davis

8-9-2013

As a tall and handsome man with a voice that sounds like a warm summer night, Brian ?Big Bear? Davis puts Barry White to shame. As the man entrusted with seven stations, overseeing 23, Brian can implement almost any format with intelligence, confidence, clarity, creativity, and competence. His stations compete at the highest level, and Brian will not rest until each station is a finely tuned machine. He is truly a man of a thousand talents. Whether as a programmer or on-air talent, Brian?s abilities go well beyond what is expected in our industry. He can dominate the room with his presence but is the sweetest, warmest, kindest person. For those of us in the radio industry, we are fortunate to have Brian Davis? influence and leadership.

Now, in his own words, here is how Executive VP, Chief of Programming Operations Point Broadcasting LLC Brian "Big Bear" Davis got into radio?

I have always had a love for music and was intrigued by radio at an early age, but I never thought that it would be my career. The way I actually ?got into radio? was a complete accident.

While in college, I was majoring in agricultural business (yes, I wanted to be a farmer and live off the land, kind of), a friend of mine who was a communications/drama major, asked me if I could ??fill in for his show?? because he had something to do that night that was really important. Being a good friend, I said yes before I even knew what his job was. I didn?t know if this guy was a stage actor, street performer, or what. I had NO IDEA what ?fill In for his show" meant. So, I called back for clarification, and it turns out it was a radio show. Specifically, R&B Slow Jams, Tuesday night from 10 p.m. to midnight on our college radio station.

That was the beginning. The show was in five days, and I grabbed every CD I had, borrowed a few pieces of vinyl from my Dad?s collection, and proceeded to tell everyone on campus and anyone I could get on the phone to make sure to tune in Tuesday at 10 p.m.

As I continued my street promotion campaign, I realized that I had to narrow down my playlist. I had amassed a ton of music, however it hit me that it was only a two-hour show. That?s when I figured out that I needed to consult a pro. At the time, I was taking one communications course, and my professor, Jim Wilson, was a great guy. He let me pick his brain, calmed me down, told me where I was waaaaaay off base, and basically helped me assemble the foundation for what is now my career. From there I comprised the most incredible playlist for two hours of radio ever assembled. It consisted of everything from Faith Evans and Jodeci to the Isley Brothers and Mtume. (Look them up, classic love triangle ballad of all time ?You, Me and He?)?

After all of that, the time had come: Tuesday night 10 p.m., I was on. It was INCREDIBLE!!!!!! After the 10 minutes of phone calls from family and friends, I realized something: People were calling me because they loved the music (that I loved), and were enjoying listening to it. It was great!

And then ?IT? happened. I remember it like it was yesterday. I had just given out the number to the studio line, and talked into the Isley Brother?s ?Between the Sheets.? The break was perfect -- a 23-second intro, flowed perfectly, got out right in time, hit the post? perfect. I just sat there for a minute grooving to the song; the speaker was directly in front me. I was basking in the moment. In my head I?m thinking, ?I AM THE MAN RIGHT NOW? I AM KILLING IT!? After a minute of getting over my own ego, I heard a little voice inside say ?Hey man, isn?t the small speaker in front of you for cuing music, and what plays on the air comes through over the big speakers up on the walls??

Sure enough, my perfect delivery and perfect track were not what was airing on the station. Pure terror ran through me. You know those moments when you get nervous, and your underarms feel like they?re on fire for a split second? I had all those types of feelings. All I could do was open the mic, and start it over.
After my fumble recovery, I proceeded to take calls, let people make dedications and requests, share stories etc. I had a ball, and then the two hours was over. The phone kept ringing with people commenting on the music and the show, so I stayed there talking to people for another hour as we switched to bluegrass music (gotta love college radio).

After I left the studio that night, and walked back to my dorm, that was it, I was hooked. I had just had one of the greatest moments of my life (up to that point), and one my greatest blunders (up to that point). All at the same time. Radio is GREAT!

My friend asked that I continue his Tuesday night show, which later evolved into a longer form Sunday afternoon show, which further evolved into me becoming music director of our college station, creating other opportunities to expose different types of music, interning at our local commercial station, and continuing through a typical radio career path of multiple jobs, multiple cities, multiple call letters. To this day I still approach radio with the same passion, eagerness, and uncertainty of my first day taking over that show.

How I Got Into Radio - Orlando Davis

There are few times in your life when you are overwhelmed by an event or a person, but that?s because you haven?t met Orlando. I was introduced to Orlando by a mutual friend, the late Tom Rivers; and like Orlando he was a man of tremendous honor and a gentle nature.

The first time Orlando gave me his patented hug, I thought the world was perfect because he was in it. When he began to talk about radio, everything he said made sense but he said things in a unique and poignant manner. You immediately and permanently respect Orlando, not because he asks for it but because he earns it. And it is that same respect that is displayed by Orlando when he is listening to Ben Hill or Greg Strassell. It?s worth a trip to Tampa, not just for the weather but to meet Orlando; and I promise you will never be the same. His thousands of listeners and followers would agree.

How I got Into Radio
Orlando Davis, Program Director and Freak Show Host at WILD 94.1 in Tampa

My story is almost a history lesson reflective of our industry?s current state, as it was only made possible with unlimited part-time hours, overnight shifts and ability to hire based on intuition and on-the-spot decision-making.  While doing an internship for WFHT Tallahassee, working under Lee Reynolds, Ric Austin, Randy D and Lee Clear, I was learning so much that, as an intern, I never wanted to go home.

But in spite of the desire to work, times were bad; checks were bouncing all over town. There would be a race by the staff to the bank, so you could guarantee having a payday for that period. Later we found out that our leader, Lee Clear, was forgoing his pay so others could have theirs. By the way, we were in the process of being sold by Ragan Henry to Charles Giddens and a local Tallahassee partner.

One day, as I was filling in for the receptionist and traffic director, a gentleman called and asked me for directions from the airport to the radio station, only to find out later that I had just spoken with the new owner. Upon his first day at the station I gave that same gentleman, Charles Giddens, a cup of coffee, and showed him to the GM?s office. He made a point of confirming that I was the receptionist with the ?deep pipes."

After hearing my name, throughout his various one-on-one interviews with other employees, Charles asked, ?Well, who is Orlando?? Once he realized that I was ?the kid from the front desk," he asked, ?What do you want to do, since you obviously have a hand in everyone else?s work?" My answer was, ?I?d like to be a DJ during the week, instead of just on the weekends.?

I was hired on the spot. No EEO ads or applicant logs, just a simple, ?Can you start, tonight?" With a quick ?yes," I was the ?new night guy? ready for the launch of WXSR-Tallahassee ?Star 101.5?; and just to flex the IMMENSE owner power he commanded (a quality that I would never forget) he walked back into the traffic office and asked me, ?You answer the phones, right? So you know all of the record reps too, right?? My ?Yes sir!? was almost immediate.

?I hear you?ve been training to be back-up, on logs, and music, so you can keep us afloat in that aspect too."  My reply of ?Uh, yes I can? came even quicker! ?Good! We?ll revisit it in six months and see if we need to address anything else. Now I?m going to finish assessing if anyone else employed here does anything, or if you just do it all.?  He closed the door and laughed all the way down the hall; and there it was, my start in radio 20 years ago. God bless that man, those people and that time; and forever, this industry.

Mark Davis Paying Off Big For Salem

11-9-2012

On his 3rd quarter conference call last night, Salem Communications CEO Ed Atsinger bragged quite a bit about the performance of talker Mark Davis. Davis joined Salem's KSKY-AM in Dallas back in May after his contract was not renewed by Cumulus at WBAP. Atsinger said ratings at the station were up 36 percent in the 3rd quarter and they continue to get better thanks to Davis. Third-quarter broadcast revenue at Salem was up 2 percent.

Like most other public radio companies, July and August were strong and in September the bottom fell out. Atsinger says October was up about 10 percent but November and December are pacing at a slower rate. In Q3 Salem took in $1.5 million in political advertising and year-to-date the company has booked $3.1 million, making 2012 the best year ever in  political advertising revenue for the company.

(11/9/2012 10:22:38 PM)
Lew Dickey wouldnt pay this guy. He was TOO expensive remember. Hes a ratings and revenue machine in market 5. More horrific decision making by guys named McVay, Pinch and Jeffries. Huckabee is no Mark Davis. Davis is local and Dallas.
Can someone tell me the last profitable move the Dickeys have made????
BTW Kudos to Salem. Nice move and nice catch from the fumbling Cumulus.

Davis Back on the Air in Dallas. Joins Salem.

After Cumulus decided not to renew his contract at WBAP, Mark Davis has been without a regular radio job. That's about to change. Davis has been picked up by Salem and will start June 4th on KSKY-AM (7AM-10AM). He says, "I will still enjoy the midmorning audience I?ve always had, in addition to meeting earlier listeners I?ve never had the pleasure of speaking with."

Davis adds, about Salem, his new employer, "I will tell you they are cut from very special cloth.  The station as a whole, with a full schedule of shows you are probably well familiar with, deserves your support.  As you join me in partnering with them, it is good to know that there is a company that will still do what it takes to nurture a full schedule of shows devoted to issues that matter, and devoted to the community where we all live and work."

Mark Davis Confirms He's Gone From WBAP

5-8-2012

Davis wrote on his blog that after 18 years at WBAP in Dallas, Cumulus has let him go. "This comes as absolutely no surprise to me.  I said from the beginning that the company has every right to pursue its business model.  If my 18 years of service, the years of ratings and revenue domination, the impenetrable bond I?ve built with countless listeners, the value of me as a presence in the building--  if these things are simply not important to them, no amount of phone calls, petitions or listener protests was going to change anything."

Davis goes on to say, "The more I learned about this company, the more I saw that the things that make a radio talk show a magnificent, magical thing to me, the things that made March 28, 1994 to March 31, 2012 the most special days of my professional life--  constitute a language they do not speak.  I say this without rancor or judgment. Everyone in this story is doing what they are free to do. I will soon be freed from some remaining contractual restraints on specifically pursuing my next destination.  I will share any developments as soon as they occur."

Is Mark Davis Out at WBAP in Dallas?

4-5-2012

We tried to reach both Davis and Cumulus to see what the story was after reading this post from Davis on his blog. "The question has arisen, and here is the answer. My contract with WBAP's new owners, Cumulus, ended last week and we have been unable to reach an agreement on a renewal." Davis has been on WBAP for nearly two decades. There's more from his post.

Last night Davis tweeted "careful everybody the story for today is not departure, but impasse. Thanks to all for the kind words." You can follow him on Twitter @markdavis. If there is news about his WBAP show Davis says everyone will find out via Twitter.

I will be in all the other places I occupy-- Fox 4 and WFAA, and my column in the Dallas Morning News-- and I will be here in the blogosphere every day, often multiple times, with my thoughts on matters large and small. Keep a good thought for all my friends at BAP, and treat them with high regard. Everything is cordial, and I have nothing but good things to say about everyone in that operation I have served for 18 years. No matter what happens, I will be in touch."

12-28-2011

Minneapolis Top 40 station KDWB has hired Rich Davis as Program Director. Davis is currently the Ops Manager for Clear Channel?s Nashville Cluster and Programs Top 40 WRVW-FM. This is a return to KDWB for Davis, who served as KDWB?s Assistant Program Director and Music Director from 1997 to 1999.

Clear Channel Minneapolis Ops Manager Greg Swedberg said ?Rich is the perfect choice to lead KDWB. I don?t know what I am more impressed with: his creativity, his leadership, or his competitive spirit.  He?s a great broadcaster and the fact that he knows the market as well as he does is an added bonus.?

Davis said ?I can?t tell you how pumped I am to be chosen for a second tour of duty at the mighty KDWB, a radio station I truly love.  Thanks to Mike Crusham, Gregg Swedberg, Tom Schurr, and Clay Hunnicutt for the opportunity.  I look forward to continuing  the amazing heritage of playing the hits and winning in the Twin Cities.  Only a station like KDWB could have gotten me to leave what to this point has become my second home of Nashville TN. I'd also like to say thanks to Dan Endom, Mark Kopelman and Jon Zellner for their blessing in moving on in my career and to my Nashville team for 11 amazing years.?

AUDIO - Dan Davis Retires From ESPN Radio

12-23-11

One of the most recognizable and powerful ESPN radio voices is retiring after 50 years in the business. After starting his career at a radio station in a small city, Dan "The Duke" Davis is hanging up the microphone. Davis' final job is at ESPN Radio where he does SportCenter updates. Davis joined ESPN radio in 1992 when the network launched. He watched it grow into the juggernaut it is today.

Davis says ESPN radio is successful because it started out slow, broadcasting on weekends only. He's been ESPN radio?s best known SportsCenter update reporter since 1999. We spoke with Davis yesterday about his retirement and the most memorable call of his career, which you can watch below. Here's our Interview with Dan Davis.

After his five decade New England-based broadcasting career, which began in 1962 at WEMJ, in Laconia, N.H., Davis now plans to concentrate on golf in Florida, mixing some radio work with his golf game ? not in that order.

"Dan has been everything you could ask a co-worker to be. A professional, first and foremost, but beyond that, a great role model who shows you how to do it without telling you how to do it. One of the proudest notches on my belt in this business is to say that we worked together, but a much more meaningful thing to call him a friend. I hope he plays golf every day until he gets sick of it and I can't explain how much I'll miss that voice or the man who used it so well for so long." ? Scott Van Pelt, whose show Davis provided updates for.
