Can Your Station Help Target Women?

8-21-14

If your station is female focused and female friendly, here's something you can package up and take to your local car dealer. The Wall Street Journal reports that more and more women are making the final decision to purchase a new automobile. Nissan's Chief Executive Carlos Ghosn tells the Journal that "women are making the final decision on more than 60 percent of new car purchases." Ford has created a program called "Live.Drive.Love," offering women 24-hour test drives, so they can "experience the product on their own time, in their own environments, and show it to friends," according to Ford's Director of U.S. Marketing, Chantel Lenard. Ever hear of or research the website askpatty.com?

The Journal says AskPatty.com is an automotive matchmaking website for women featuring a panel of female experts. Those experts could include auto executives, magazine editors, and even race-car drivers. They give women advice on buying, maintaining, and insuring cars. And, wisely, Askpatty.com sells services to auto companies targeting female customers. There's also a new company called Women-drivers.com. It's a place for women to discuss the experience they had at specific car dealerships. Women-drivers.com found that women visit an average of 1.9 dealerships before buying. And 47.5 percent of women who bought a new car went to the dealership by themselves.

And here's a great stat from the Journal story regarding millennials?53 percent of car buyers are female. A 2013 Autotrader.com study also projects U.S. millennials will be the wealthiest generation ever. Here's a link to the entire article which should help you understand the change taking place with auto purchases and how you can address that with a proposal for your local dealer.

The Most Influential Women in Radio?

6-12-14

One of our most popular issues, feature CMG's Kim Guthrie on the cover, will hit your mailboxes June 23. Radio Ink's Most Influential Women in Radio issue is now in its 15th year and it's as popular with readers today as it was back in 1999. This year we added something new - off-the-record thinking from The Most Influential about the advancement of women to power positions in the industry. We'll be sharing those answers with you here in the headlines until the issue is released. Here's a sample of what they had to say to the question, "Do you believe the playing field is 100% fair for both women and men to advance in radio?"

Do you believe the playing field is 100% fair for both women and men to advance in radio?
- Women are in mid-level management roles, but senior roles continue to be male dominated. Men occupy CEO roles and are the final decision makers for key senior roles.  Gender and style differences keep women on the sidelines verses the first frontlines of the industry.
- No. The playing field is level at entry-level sales, but not in management, programming, or on-air.?
- Not really.  Radio still feels a bit like an old boy?s network.
- Yes I do.  The true qualities that make for a good leader, the behaviors & skills that differentiate the radio professional that will keep rising in the ranks, are not gender-specific.
- At the higher levels of management, trust is a key component for advancement.  Women haven?t had as much exposure as men, who have grown up with each other in successful careers.

(SOCIAL MEDIA) Women Succeeding In Digital

8-21-2012

Use Facebook for this. Use Twitter for that. Take more video. Promote the new app. Tease website content. Managers are inundated by digital changes. But who?s doing the research to keep your company cutting-edge?

Who?s writing the online content, setting up the social platforms, and executing the strategy?

Your digital presence is only as strong as the people behind it. Trinity Brocato is VP of digital media for Premiere Radio Networks, and Kathleen Heaney is digital director for Elvis Duran in the Morning. Two women who share a similar vision for radio?s digital presence ? and their passion for digital is contagious.

How did you arrive where you are?

Brocato: I started as a radio intern in Santa Barbara my freshman year of college, and I?ve been in love with radio ever since. I?ve worked as an overnight jock, board op, promotions coordinator, commercial production editor, morning show producer, and music director. In the late ?90s, when I was offered an opportunity to become the operations manager for a cluster of small-market stations, I turned the offer down and asked to split my time between my music director position and a newly created website director position. At the time, radio station websites were a rarity and had very little perceived value. Thankfully, I had a forward-thinking GM. We launched our first website, and, within the year, two more  followed. My role continued to expand, and before long, I was managing nine sites across two markets. In 2007, I discovered an opening at Premiere and jumped to syndication.

Heaney: When I entered my freshman year at Rutgers University in 2004, jobs like mine didn?t exist. Facebook was in its infancy, and Twitter wasn?t on the radar. I started off wanting to be a fashion writer, but the dress designer I worked for quickly realized I was far better utilized designing the company website than merchandising clothing. When I saw there was a demand for young, tech-savvy people to pave the social road for big companies, I signed up for graphic design and Web-development courses to supplement my bachelor?s degree. Many of my skills are self-taught, but I knew having Web courses and certificates on my resume would give me an edge in the job market.

How does your company rely on you?

Brocato: My job is to lead Premiere?s digital team while overseeing its interactive business, creating alternative forms of program delivery, developing new online business opportunities, and building innovative digital capabilities to engage listeners. I also oversee strategy, production, and creative for various websites dedicated to Premiere?s nationally syndicated talent, and lead the digital efforts at live events like the CMA Awards.

Heaney: I?m plugged in 24/7 to the news. When your job is to share content, you have to always be connected. I?m addicted to hashtags, viral videos, trending topics, everything. I write articles and design artwork for ElvisDuran.com, snap and edit photos, craft social media posts, and interact with listeners on Facebook and Twitter. One of the most important things I do is update our Twitter and Facebook accounts in real time with the topics we?re talking about live. Encouraging the conversation via social media allows  people to interact with us on a different level.

What skills are essential for someone in your position?

Brocato: Having a baseline technical understanding is obviously important, but being able to easily communicate that knowledge is key. It?s imperative to educate others that radio is no longer a one-way conversation ? personalities, stations, and brands have the ability to engage the audience in a two-way dialogue, anytime, anywhere. It?s necessary to constantly look for new and innovative ways to improve our business, and part of that is being aware of, and open to, new technologies. Not every new idea is here to stay, but it?s important to stay on top of trends and weed through them to find ways to strengthen our brands across multiple platforms.

Heaney: You have to be a digital one-man band. It isn?t enough to be good at just social media or graphic design. You have to do it all, and do it quickly! From writing content to designing banners and editing videos, companies are looking for someone who can execute well thought out Web campaigns from start to finish.

What advice can you give others who hold digital positions in radio?

Brocato: Be flexible and open to new ideas. The digital landscape is constantly shifting, and new platforms like Facebook, Twitter, and iHeartRadio offer new opportunities to reach beyond the transmitter and connect with consumers 24/7. They give us the power to transform local radio into global radio.

Heaney: In a day and age when you can get all the top news headlines, respond to e-mails written to you from the other side of the world, and wish 800 of your closest friends good morning before your first cup of coffee, it?s essential to stay on top of online trends. Sign up for newsletters, use Google Reader, and enlist a social media dashboard to make your life easier.

MIW Group: More Women In GM Jobs

5-24-12

The new MIW Gender Analysis Study by the Mentoring and Inspiring Women in Radio Group found that 1,807 AM and FM stations had women in GM posts in 2011 -- that's 16.6 percent of the 11,226 stations looked at. That's up slightly from 16.1 percent in 2010, and up from 14.9 percent back in 2004. In the top 100 markets, the trend was also upward: Women managed 17.4 percent of those stations in 2011, up from 16.7 percent in 2010.

Sales management still offers the best opportunities for women, although there was little change from 2004-2011, the report shows; last year, 30.5 percent of stations had female sales managers, a slight increase. In the top 100 markets, 32.1 percent of stations had women in the sales management post last year, also a slight gain.

Women programmed 11.1 percent of AM and FM stations in 2011, up slightly from 10.7 percent in 2004; in the top 100 markets, women program 9.6 percent of stations.

"The MIWs have been analyzing and publishing these gender numbers for the past 12 years," MIW spokesperson and Greater Media VP/Corporate Communications Heidi Raphael said. "It is very encouraging to see the percentages consistenly incrase. We look forward to seeing those numbers continue to grow on a larger scale in the future."

The annual Gender Analysis Study is compiled, analyzed, and released by the MIWs from information provided by MStreet Publications.

MIW Mentoring Program Looking For 3 Motivated Women

After witnessing what the MIW mentoring program does, at the Radio show in Chicago, women interested in advancing in radio should not waste another minute reaching out to this organization. We would advise any women interested in advancing in radio to take apply for this program as soon as possible. Only 3 candidates will be chosen. There is no doubt women who enter the mentoring program will have access to some of the most successful minds in our industry. It's a rare opportunity to learn from radio executives who have paid their dues, made mistakes and gained success. They will provide 3 very lucky individuals with insight that can never be learned in any textbook.

This is the 11th year of the mentoring program, which matches up-and-coming women in the radio industry with female professionals who are leaders in all aspects of radio. "This is a wonderful opportunity for mentees to gain valuable insight, knowledge and access to some of the most influential women in radio," said Lindsay Cerajewski, Chair of the 2012 MIW Radio Group's Mentoring committee and General Sales Manager at CBS Radio?s WUSN-FM in Chicago. ?We look forward to another outstanding program in 2012."

Three candidates from the radio broadcasting industry will be selected for the 2012 program.  For mentee criteria and instructions on how to apply, please go to www.radiomiw.com. The deadline is Friday, October 28th. The program is named in the memory of Mildred Carter (pictured), who, along with her husband, Andrew "Skip" Carter, founded the first African American owned radio station in the U.S. in 1950, when they turned on KPRS Kansas City, Missouri.  Mrs. Carter ran the Carter Broadcast Group for many years after the death of Skip Carter, before turning over control of the company to her grandson, Michael Carter in 1987.

The Mentoring and Inspiring Women in Radio Group (MIW) is dedicated to using its influence and resources to support women in radio to develop strong management and leadership skills. The MIWs are equally committed to advocating the advancement of women to senior positions in radio companies and corporations.

2,000 Women in 12 Bullet Points

Alan Burns and Associates has released the final chapter of data from its national study of over 2,000 female listeners to AC and Top 40 radio. CEO Alan Burns concluded his 4th free webinar yesterday where he shared his findings with the radio industry. Burns titled his study, "Here She Comes 2011" and has summarized the key points from the study in these 12 bullet points.

* Attitudes in general toward radio are very positive, including among younger listeners.
* Younger listeners, though, are less passionate about the medium and more at-risk to other music sources. They are more likely to use social media, texting, and streaming, and radio needs to engage them there on their terms.
* Radio doesn?t do social media well yet.
* Pandora, etc., are not eating radio?s lunch and not likely to. Willingness to pay for music streams is very low, and most women rate the music on their favorite radio station as about as good as that on customized streams.
* However, personalizable music streams and the eventual presence of in-car internet will both create more fragmentation of radio listening.
* Only 36% of women15-54 normally listen to radio before leaving home in the morning. That?s a disappointing number that reflects radio?s having ceded a great deal of early morning ?news and companionship? ground to television.  Another number that indicates weaker than idea morning content: less than 40% of women who do listen to radio in the morning have a morning radio bit or feature they look forward to.
* Women expressed interest in hearing information on the radio that relates to the safety of their children. Smart programmers and morning talent will spend some time thinking about what to do with that.
* Money has overtaken time stress as women?s number one concern - at a time when radio generally offers fewer cash promotions.
* Radio?s most valuable listeners tend to be:
- Heavy/Deeps (heavy radio users who are deeply committed to their P1 station)
- At-work listeners
- Women who listen to radio before leaving home in the morning.
- Facebook fans
- Web site visitors
All of those groups are greater TSL potentials than the average listener.
* Heavy/Deeps tend to bond with talented air personalities.
* Arbitron panelists and diarykeepers are different from other listeners in some significant ways.
* Top 40 listener tastes currently lean more pop than they have in years, and AC listener tastes continue to become more contemporary.

Pandora Useage By Women Does Not Decrease Radio Listening

7/20/2011

Data to be released by Alan Burns and Associates tomorrow shows that women who listen to Pandora and other non-radio music streaming services do not use radio less than other women. ?In fact? Burns says , ?women who pay for music streams actually report listening to radio slightly more than most women on a daily basis.  These are music lovers, and it looks like the more ways they have to listen to music, the more time they spend doing it.?

Alan Burns and Associates conducted its second annual largest-ever study of female radio listeners and will unveil the results in a series of four webinars beginning this Thursday, July 21st, presented by DMR. Over 2,000 female listeners to AC and CHR stations were interviewed regarding their attitudes toward and usage of radio, digital and social media, and their own personal priorities.

The first webinar will cover study headlines, usage and attitudes toward radio, what?s happening with in-car listening, radio?s digital competitors and radio?s own online efforts, and women?s interests. The webinar is scheduled for 2pm Eastern Thursday. To register for any or all of the free webinars click here.   https://www1.gotomeeting.com/register/369443800

On the cover of that issue is Ginny Morris. Morris is the Chairman of the new Hubbard radio.
