Former A.G. To Keynote Radio Ink Conference

1-28-15

Radio Ink is pleased to announce that former U.S. Attorney General Alberto Gonzales will keynote the Radio Ink Hispanic Radio Conference being held in Dallas on March 4-5. Gonzales holds the distinction of having held the highest post in U.S. government ever held by an individual of Hispanic heritage, having served from 2005-2007 as a cabinet member under President George W. Bush.

Gonzales' presence at the conference is a signal of Hispanic radio's importance during this time of uncertainty regarding immigration matters and the ever-more-influential Hispanic vote.

Radio Ink Publisher B. Eric Rhoads says, "This is a major feather in the cap for Hispanic radio when a prominent leader like Gonzales takes time out of his incredibly busy schedule to address the community of Hispanic radio stations. This shows just how important Hispanic radio is on the political scene today. He is also the highest-ranking government official to ever keynote any Radio Ink conference."
President Bush named Alberto Gonzales to lead the Department of Justice in 2005, stating that, "Al has been a model of courage and character to his fellow citizens." Before entering public service, Gonzales practiced business law for 13 years at the Houston law firm of Vinson & Elkins. In 1995, he resigned his law partnership to serve as general counsel to the Governor of Texas, and after three years was appointed Texas Secretary of State. He was named to the Texas Supreme Court in 1999 and elected by the citizens of Texas to serve a full six-year term in the November 2000 general election. He served in the White House as counsel to the president from 2001-2005. Gonzales is an Air Force veteran, and attended the U.S. Air Force Academy.

Streamline Publishing EVP Deborah Parenti says, "Judge Gonzales' unique insight on a variety of issues facing the country should provide thought provoking conversation among the Hispanic radio community and its leadership gathered at the Hispanic Radio Conference in Dallas this year."

This will be a historic appearance by a top U.S. official at the radio industry's only conference devoted to Hispanic radio. Don't miss it: Register now!

Former Napa GM Launches Online Station

10-31-14

Jeff Schechtman, who was general manager at KVON/KVYN in Napa, has launched NAPAbroadcasting.com. NAPAbroadcasting has partnered with Napa Valley College on the project and its offices and studios are located on the Napa Valley College campus. Schechtman said that ?after leaving KVON/KVYN, I worked on several other non-radio projects. Suddenly it became clear to me and others in the community that there was a huge need for local programming that wasn?t being served.?

NAPAbroadcasting.com uses audio integration through SoundCloud and streams using RadioJar. A video element will be added at a later date. Schechtman says, "Initially the focus has been on local election coverage, and NAPAbroadcasting.com expects to add at least four new shows immediately following the elections in early November. This is a commercial venture, with shows seeking overall sponsorship. We see this as a commercial version of the NPR model. We don?t want to have our programs interrupted by long stop-sets and annoying jingles. We think our sponsors appreciate the value of the programs and we have a high degree of respect for our audience and their time."

Former CT Gov, WTIC Personality Found Guilty Of Campaign Violations

9-19-14

Former Connecticut Governor John G. Rowland, who also formerly hosted afternoons on CBS Radio's WTIC-AM in Hartford, has been convicted of violating federal campaign laws by hiding consulting fees he received from an unsuccessful Republican candidate.

Rowland was convicted of conspiracy, falsifying records to obstruct an investigation, causing false reports to be filed with the Federal Election Commission, and exceeding campaign contribution limits. The scheme reportedly involved Rowland's being paid about $35,000 through a business run by Brian Foley, the husband of the candidate, Lisa Wilson-Foley, rather than through Wilson-Foley's campaign.

Rowland spent 10 months in prison after being convicted in 2004 of taking bribes from state contractors during his time as governor.

A Former CC Programmer's Take On The New Name

9-16-14

Daryl Parks, who spends a lot of his writing time now throwing stones at the industry he built a nice career in, in his mot recent blog, comes out in favor of Clear Channel's switch to iHeartMedia. He says discussions about a name change began over 15 years ago when he was still around. "We knew Clear Channel had a bad corporate brand image, for no other reason than it was radio?s version of Pacman eating up competitors. So today?s news of the name change really is about 15 years too late. Granted there was no iHeartRadio App to brand the company back in those days." Parks says there are five reasons this is a good move...
1.iHeart is a ?consumer facing? brand. I know that?s corporate-speak. It means ?iHeart? means something to the consumer. That?s a good thing.
2.Clear Channel means nothing to the consumer, never has, never did, never would.
3.Clear Channel means radio and is not sexy to advertisers. iHeart, meanwhile, sells the future.
4.Clear Channel had the perception of being ?Cheap Channel.? I guess ?iCheap? can be used, but that doesn?t have the same ring to it.
5.Yeah. Yeah. iHeart is hip to hipsters. Got that. Not the reason to change lobby signage though.
Parks says he's been saying for years that a radio company has to transform from a radio company to a digital company at its core. "Think of a wagon wheel. The hub being the digital core and a spoke of the wheel terrestrial radio. Right now most radio companies are just the opposite, with terrestrial radio serving as its core and digital a spoke off that. This is opposite of media?s future and the future of advertising, unlike what you heard at this year?s ?Radio ? What Me Worry?? convention in Indianapolis, better known as the NAB?s Radio Show." Parks has also been known to throw stones at radio conventions. At least in this post he didn't use the phrase "circle jerk."

Former Gov. Used Show for Political Gain

Prosecutors allege Rowland took the money from former congressional candidate Lisa Wilson-Foley and her husband and financial backer, Brian Foley, and went on the air and attacked Foley's opponents. (VIDEO) Harsh Words From a Former Automotive Radio Advertiser

10/24/13

Barry Merrill (pictured, center, at the DASH conference) is the President and General Manager of Grand Ledge Ford Lincoln in Grand Ledge, MI. Unfortunately he is a lost radio advertiser and he blames the radio industry for his decision to turn all of his dollars over to TV. Merrill said there was too much turnover in sales reps, and they were just trying to hit their budgets -- there was no relationship-building. He went from spending all of his advertising dollars on radio to spending nothing. We asked Merrill to give the industry some advice on how to improve.

"When you call on us, use an all-around approach," he said. "Focus on new cars, used cars, promote our website and our Facebook page. Talk about what you can do to promote the dealership as a whole." Merrill says Ford is moving a lot of advertising to digital, including Pandora, and he says it's working."I like to advertise directly," he said. "I get more feedback."

Ford is now at 60% to 70% digital, up from 20T-30%. Merrill also asks, as radio sees technology evolving so fast, how radio is going to be engaged in that: "If it's a regular antenna connecting to the car and everyone else is digital, you are going to be left out of the game."

Here is our extended video interview from DASH with Barry Merrill.

(MANAGER'S PERSPECTIVE) While this may be true, there are always two sides to a story. It's doubtful that all the Detroit radio groups simply dropped the ball forcing this guy to abandon radio. There are too many good radio groups in that market. Would have loved to hear what they had to say about it.
.... Major Market General Manager

What's your perspective? Leave your comments below.

(10/26/2013 9:35:57 AM)
Yet he is in the business of selling radios. One comes with every car.
(10/26/2013 9:07:26 AM)
Eric and Ed,

After considering all the comments (most of them, anyway), it appears to me that the car dealer you chose to offer his thoughts on media use was a poor choice. If the radio guys in the market who know him have him pegged as just a rate objector who relished the opportunity to get on stage and rip radio a new one, then he served no purpose in your intended forum.
RadioInk has made some questionable choices in their recent panel picks. Many of the tech "experts" are people looking for work and get some by opining that radio is nearly dead and only their services will save it. Others are agency reps who change their stance weekly as their ilk always has.
RadioInk is to be saluted for trying to get a conversation going that can be beneficial, but not if all the speakers have the same theme that the sky is falling, because the money people who are building and buying radio stations know that is not true.

(10/26/2013 12:13:13 AM)
"Live and local" is a phrase served with the Kool-Aid. And, like that famous (Jonestown) beverage, very few understand the implications of sucking it up.

Live and local can be programmed in the morning by anybody so inclined. And there isn't a reader here who doesn't know what a shambles and a sham that would be.

Anyway, "Ronnie's" next article deals with that very issue. It may be an opportunity to do something different - like: learn something new.

(10/25/2013 7:38:26 PM)
In Eric Rhoads impassioned separate message today detailing the far-reaching wisdom of his recent conference the ad director for Hyundai and Kia says unless radio maintains LIVE AND LOCAL they will be less of a factor.
Wanna eat your comments of late on LIVE AND LOCAL, Ronnie? We can start with this example of your nonsense.
(10/25/2013 6:45:17 PM)
Got it: It's the advertisers' fault and when it's not, it's the sales departments' fault. Anything to delay taking action on our own parts is acceptable.

So, here is the strategy: a.) Knock a series of homers out of the park for a half dozen different clients. b.) inform the desired advertisers of those results while asking them to drop by at their convenience.

Can't pull that off? Load up on personal supplies; get with station ownership and management; lock the doors; speak candidly and truthfully; participate in making decisions for drastic and dramatic improvements, and after that, determine if there is a personal future in this racket.
