Podcasting Faces Measurement Challenge

2-6-2015

Apple is the force behind most podcast activity, but only provides limited data to publishers and advertisers creating frustration in the podcast marketplace. About 70% of all podcasts reach consumers via iTunes, and due to privacy concerns, many in the podcast biz believe that Apple has no plans to share its data, according to an article on Digiday. The availability and quality of podcasting data on advertising consumption falls far behind data available for other digital media.

Clear Channel Chicago Faces $20K for EEO Violations

12-6-13

That's according to the Chicagoland Radio and Media website. The FCC alleges the Chicago cluster (WVAZ-FM, WGCI-FM, WKSC-FM, WLIT-FM, WNUA-FM, and WGRB-AM) failed to comply with EEO rules nearly three dozen times over a two-year period. A fine of $20,000 and strict reporting conditions have been proposed. The review of Clear Channel Chicago's hiring practices was done between August 1, 2009 through July 31, 2011. Out of the 36 full-time vacancies at their Chicago radio stations, Clear Channel allegedly did not follow the proper EEO rules for 33 of those hires. Clear Channel Chicago failed to notify numerous agencies of the vacancies, despite requests for information. Read the full story HERE

We Need To Get In Their Faces

11-20-13

During the Radio Ink Forecast 2014 luncheon, Clear Channel CEO Bob Pittman candidly spoke about his thoughts on the radio industry?s need to be more ?in the face? of marketers and not rely so heavily on agencies and buyers alone. He admits that many marketers don?t always understand radio and it?s up to the leaders in radio to make them understand our business better.

Pittman is also concerned with the concept of changing the positioning of radio to ?audio,? explaining that it?s not something that consumers would use or embrace. You also won?t hear him refer to Pandora or similar pureplays as ?radio? because ?radio? is the exact opposite of what they can offer. Pittman continued his discussion by citing Clear Channel?s management style ? to create team leaders and teams which confront problems head on and strive to find areas of concern, as well as take chances on big ideas. If a company doesn?t do this, it will find itself floundering in mediocrity very quickly.

(11/20/2013 11:23:01 PM)
To my knowledge, has Mr. Pittman ever 'fessed up and admitted that radio was an abject failure at servicing audiences and advertisers with the utmost in programming and commercial production.

There's a broken-down, rusted-out Caterpillar dozer blocking the driveway. Until that thing is dragged away and replaced - nobody's going anywhere.

The rest is about forced posing, posturing and pathetic attempts at re-framing.

Although weird, it is possible that Mr Pittman was never told and doesn't even know! His considered comments are hardly those that would sustain any motivation.

(11/20/2013 8:51:37 PM)
Board room antics. Not reality speaking. More political posturing. Go get em guys !!! You can do it !!! Now I got to get back to my yacht.

Lets see Pittman go on a call and try and get around an agency to speak to a "marketer". Good fricking luck Bob.

(11/20/2013 5:59:58 PM)
We need to start realizing that radio does not fit the "Ad Agency" business model of high creative fees, high production fees, and high-cost media. The reason so much ad agency money goes to television is that medium perfectly fits the ad agency business model. When a client has their ad agency create a $5,000 to $1,000,000 tv commercial, the ad agency gets to keep all that money. Not the case for radio, which is by nature a much more efficient medium. Lets start talking about this issue!
(11/20/2013 4:54:00 PM)
The best place for radio industry leaders to start is with the large automakers. Automotive continues to make up the largest category share for radio and we are under attack. Local dealers are being instructed to spend less in radio and more in TV by corporate representatives.
(11/20/2013 4:25:37 PM)
Mr. Pitman made a good general point, based on what was covered in this article. But the one thing he did not mention was that in talking to marketers, you need to speak in their language and position the radio audience not in quarter hours like you would with ad buyer, but in how they discuss their audiences, in lifestyle groups. A format like Top40 or HotAC has very distinct lifestyle groups, usually two to three across an 18-34 or 25-54 audience.

Rock Hall Short List Includes Guns 'N Roses, Cure, Joan Jett & Faces

by Gary Graff, Detroit  |   September 27, 2011 6:00 EDT

Guns N' Roses, Heart, Joan Jett & the Blackhearts and the Cure are among the first-timers on short list of nominees for the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame's class of 2011, joining returning hopefuls the Beastie Boys, the Red Hot Chili Peppers, Donna Summer and others.

Fifteen finalists are on the ballot that's been sent to the Rock Hall's more than 500 voters, who will in turn select five to be inducted into the shrine on April 14, when the 27th annual ceremony returns to Cleveland for the third time. The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Foundation will subsequently determine non-performing inductees and recipients of the Award for Musical Excellence (formerly Sidemen).

Other first-time nominees on this year's ballot include the Small Faces/Faces, the Spinners, Rufus with Chaka Khan, Freddie King and rappers Eric B. & Rakim. Donovan, Laura Nyro and War are making return visits to the ballot.

Acts are eligible at least 25 years after their first commercial recording release, meaning 1986 or before for this year's group. This is the first year for Guns 'N Roses and Eric B. & Rakim's eligibility.

Faces, 1971: Sloppy & Fantastic

Small Faces and Faces keyboardist Ian McLagan announced that "it's about bloody time" his bands were nominated but said he felt that grouping the two together was "a bit insulting. If we have to go in as a combo, that's not right. It's a dollar short and many years too late -- but I'll take it." Two of the Faces are already in the Rock Hall: Rod Stewart as a solo artist; and Ron Wood as part of the Rolling Stones. Drummer Kenney Jones was briefly in the Who but was not inducted with them in 1990.

As in 2009, the 2012 ceremony will be open to the public. Individual tickets will go on sale in December, while tables and VIP packages are available now, Information can we found at www.rockhall.com. The Hall of Fame + Museum is planning 10 days of special activities leading up to the ceremony, including the unveiling of a new exhibit and the grand opening of its library and archives.
