Stephen A. Smith Gets Show On Sirius

8-7-14

As Radio Ink reported last week, ESPN host Stephen A. Smith will be getting his own Sports Talk program on SiriusXM's Mad Dog Sports Radio (channel 85). The program will be produced by ESPN from ESPN Audio's headquarters in Bristol. The new two-hour daily show debuts Tuesday, Sept. 2, at 1 p.m. ET. Smith said, "Words can't express how excited I am to be going to SiriusXM. I've waited a long time for this. All I'm going to say is Sept. 2 can't arrive soon enough. So buckle up, because I'm coming!"

Traug Keller, ESPN senior vice president, production, business divisions, added, "This is an exciting new business opportunity for ESPN Audio. By creating outstanding exclusive audio content for SiriusXM, in this case The Stephen A. Smith Show, we are maximizing our presence on a variety of platforms that expand our reach and options for sports fans."

Smith just came off a one-week suspension after he made insensitive comments toward women shortly after the Ray Rice incident. Rice was caught on tape getting physical with his girlfriend (now wife) and suspended by the NFL for two games. Smith used the word "provoke," when talking about women in that type of violent situation, which lead to his suspension from both ESPN TV and radio for one week.

Is Stephen A. Smith Leaving ESPN Radio?

7-28-30

ESPN has no comment on the story in The New York Daily News that Smith is headed to SiriusXM to join former WFAN host Chris "Mad Dog" Russo's channel. You may remember our story back in May when Russo said he was unable to find a black host ?who is worthy of doing a national show.? The very-well-connected Bob Raissman at The Daily News reports Smith is leaving ESPN-98.7 FM and heading to Sirius, where he'll get his own show. Currently Smith is a co-host with Ryan Ruocco on 98.7.

Jury Says Stockbroker Killed Stephen B. Williams

Williams was a very popular radio host in the early 80's. He was killed back in 2006, his body found off Santa Catalina Island. Williams was organizing his father's estate when he met Harvey Morrow. Morrow said he was an investment banker from New York who knew his father. Williams asked Morrow to set up a trust fund for the sale proceeds of his father's $1 million home and part of an estate worth $2.4 million. Prosecuters say it was the money that led Morrow to slowly bilk Williams and then to kill him. Yesterday a jury agreed. Williams' sister Jan, who is disabled, said in an e-mail to Radio Ink last night "It doesn't seem possible for it to be (more or less) over."

Prosecuters say Morrow (pictured) used money from the Williams' estate to upgrade his yacht adding a fireplace and $100,000 worth of electronics. Prosecutors presented evidence that Morrow deposited nearly $2 million from the estate into a bank in the British Virgin Islands. He then would regularly withdraw the money in small increments from the offshore account and place it under his name in a U.S. bank.

Jan Williams said in her e-mail, "After more than 5 years of waiting, nearly 5 weeks of trial, it hardly took more than 5 minutes to read the charges, special circumstances and verdict. In the case of the People vs Harvey S Morrow, for the murder of Steven B Williams, the verdict was Guilty. Each of the specific findings (Murder for financial Gain, the Implementation of a Firearm (which carries its own penalties), and a few other stipulations were deemed 'True.' These carry with them more than one life sentence, I believe the shorter one (25-years to Life, no parole) gets served first. I don't think Harvey will have any reason to ask for the bed nearer the door: he won't be leaving first."

"Sentencing is scheduled for Friday, 16 December, what would be my parents' 68th wedding anniversary. I'll be coming back for that. I should qualify for Greyhound's equivalent to frequent-flyer miles, don't you think? It'll be time to start knitting another sweater, too."

Dateline NBC has been following the story and the trial.

Stephen King Hires Liberal For Morning Show

Yep, that Stephen King. King owns two stations in Bangor, Maine where he held a rare press conference yesterday to let the community know he's hired 50-year-old Pat LaMarche to co-host a morning show on WZON AM and FM starting September 12th. LaMarche ran for vice president as a member of the Green Party in 2004.  LaMarche will co-host the show with 43-year-old Don Cookson, a former television reporter. King said, "We're a little to the left, but we're right." Nothing is more fun than standing up to a bully,? LaMarche said. ?There?s an awful lot of bullying going on out there right now.?
