Knell told the NPR Board of Directors he's leaving the company to become President and CEO of the National Geographic Society. Knell was hired after former CEO Vivian Schiller resigned following a controversy involving the Tea Party. She was recorded mocking conservatives and questioning whether NPR even needs federal funding. It took seven months to replace her. Knell will remain at NPR during the transition to find his replacement.
