JAM Celebrates Four Decades Of Success

11-24-14

Congratulations to the folks at JAM Creative Productions. JAM specializes in producing ID jingles for radio stations and this week is celebrating 40 years in business. Jonathan and Mary Lyn Wolfert founded the company in 1974 and they still run the business today. (JAM is an acronym for ?Jon And Mary Lyn?). The couple started by working out of their apartment which grew into a suite of offices, then a studio, and ultimately a custom building with offices and two recording studios.

Jon Wolfert says, ?All of our clients are important to us, and it?s difficult to pick favorites. But, as someone who grew up in New York, I?m amazed that a young couple who heard our work on WABC in the mid-70s could have had children who heard us on Z-100 in the 80s, and grandkids who are hearing us on WCBS-FM and WFAN today. We?re constantly adapting to keep things fresh, but we don?t lose sight of what works when it comes to creating a station?s image. That?s one reason why all of those different generations often remember, and can probably sing the names of, the stations they grew up with.?

Rush Limbaugh Celebrates 25 Years in Syndication

3-18-13

It's an incredible achievement in our industry when you're able to build a program to the point hundreds of radio stations want to carry it. It's almost unheard of, once you've built that huge roster of stations, to keep them for decades. Unless you are Rush Limbaugh of course. It was August 1, 1988 when Rush began his syndication run that many say saved the AM dial. In an exclusive Radio Ink cover story interview, Rush will look back on those 25 years and offer his thoughts on whether someone in radio today can achieve the kind of success he's enjoying. Our special issue with Rush on the cover will be released April 22nd. This week we'll hear from many in the radio industry as they analyze Rush's reign as one of the most successful broadcasters of all time.

Consultant Gabe Hobbs says of Rush's 25 year syndication run, "The short answer is talent, entertainment values and a clear understanding on his part that he is in show business and not politics. Rush Limbaugh at the very least reinvented a genre but more likely you could claim he invented a NEW genre.  He became a bigger than life RADIO personality who knew how to deliver unique content that simply wasn?t available in 1988 on the radio dial in the United States.  By the early 90?s we had hundreds of imitators.  None achieved his level of success because they were not naturally different or unique.  And most missed the entertainment value proposition as well."

Hobbs says there were certainly other factors at work. "According to Al Ries and Jack Trout history shows that the first brand into the brain, on the average, gets twice the long-term market share of the second brand.  So first in wins as a general rule.  Rush was first and he remains the best.  What Paul Harvey is to news radio, Rush Limbaugh is to talk radio.  So programmers should stop asking themselves, ?Where is the next Paul Harvey or Rush Limbaugh or Howard Stern??  Instead you should be asking, ?Where is the next great entertainer or communicator?  Where can I find someone that is new and different?  Someone that will say things in a way that is fresh."

With Rush celebrating 25 years in syndication it's important to note it was at KFBK in Sacramento when Rush  replaced Morton Downey Jr. that his incredible run really took off. That station, owned by Clear Channel, still carries his program today.

(3/19/2013 9:49:33 AM)
Applause to Rush. But you seemed to have missed Bob and Tom, who just celebrated THIRTY years. Not all of them in syndication, of course, but a great run nonetheless. Proud that I was with them for 18.
(3/18/2013 10:49:30 PM)
I don't think 25 years of Rush Limbaugh is any reason to celebrate. He and guys like Savage are examples of what has gone wrong with the U.S. in the last 25 years. It's nothing to be proud of, IMHO.
(3/18/2013 2:02:07 PM)
HA!HA! Jim Brady gets it. Say something provocative and get the conflict going. Rush is the grand master of this technique. His constant foil the Democrats. I use to tell my brother in law, who is a fanatic ditto head. Greg it is a radio show. A show, entertainmnet! It is fun if you happen to agree and stimulation if you do not.
(3/18/2013 12:29:01 PM)
Oh Brady get over yourself...Conservatives are always "hatemongers", but liberals are "passionate thinkers" or whatever euphemism the left comes up with to excuse their oratorical and political excesses. Keith Olbermann, Bill Maher, Ed Schultz and others spew real personal venom and get a hall pass for the most part by liberal media...Rush is a great entertainer and
provocative raconteur. Before Rush, there was no voice for conservative thought or contrasting opinion.
(3/18/2013 11:27:09 AM)
Rush is the Jackie Gleason of Talk Radio. "...and away we go!"

John Tesh Celebrates Ten Years on Radio

8-13-2012

John Tesh has been entertaining fans on the radio for a little over a decade now. He started out with a weekend show and two years in expanded to six days a week. Tesh is one of our featured stars in our upcoming syndication issue set for release on August 27th. In that issue, we learned just how difficult it is to become syndicated, what it takes to push out compelling content every day to a national audience and what some people will do to become the next big name on the radio. For Tesh, he did it all himself, when Westwood One fired him.

RI: How difficult was it to get your show syndicated?
Tesh: You?re talking to the guy who couldn't get a record deal in the 1985, so I sold cassettes out of my garage. You are also talking to the guy who got canceled by Westwood One. We had 15 stations on Westwood. They said "This is too expensive. our audience isn't interested in this." I called up Scott Myers in NYC and said "You are my affiliates relations guy." He said, "What the hell is that?" I said "Just call up stations and tell them this is an amazing show and I?ll get on the phone with you." We were a success three years in without having any major markets without having Los Angeles, Chicago, San Francisco or New York City. We built it in Westchester, Stamford, Long Island and Ventura County. You can do that. People are people.

RI: How challenging is it for you to have compelling content for every single show?
Tesh:  It is challenging, but we've got it down to a science now. Our mantra is always; if it doesn't cause a difference in your life, if it doesn't move you forward in your life, if it doesn't cause you to make a difference in someone else's life, then we won't put it on the radio. So, there is no celebrity gossip. If people can't describe what they've heard in 2 sentences, then we won't put it on the air. It is very much like a network news operation where stories are pitched and curated and continually vetted to make sure they will work. There's no real "let's chat for a minute." We don't do that.

RI: How are you staying engaged with listeners to keep them coming back to the show?
Tesh: Our culture is we really do live that "Intelligence for Your Life" thing. You will find people in our office just coming back from the gym, exercising, eating right. We have Free Food Friday's, which is healthy food. We try to engineer that whole brand of Intelligence for your Life. What we try to do is... I am an old friend and a big fan of Oprah. I have called us Oprah on the radio. We've really tried to establish a show that is not just a radio show, but hopefully a lifestyle. We take that out on the road. We do 45-50 concerts a year. We reach between 180-200K people a year. It's not just music concerts, it's talking about Intelligence for Life, telling stories about family, how to live your life a whole lot better, how to find purpose. We partner up with our local radio stations and put the Porsche dealer in the front row and the local Spa dealer in the third row. We really do try to engage with people and do, everywhere we can. I am also a huge Dave Ramsey fan and watched his model over the years, and we behave like his.

RI: Talk about your relationship with advertisers and how you make that work.
Tesh: I have to thank Dial Global, who sells our spots in New York. They have really helped us with things like copy splitting and superserving advertisers. 4 or 5 times a year I go out to Chicago and New York and meet with advertisers whether it's OnStar or Kohl's or Prevagen. We discuss how they want to be presented so it's not just interruption marketing. People really want creative ways to present their brand or their products. With us, because of what we do, we are able to do sleep intelligence in the middle of our program and then put that in there. We have done foot intelligence for Odor Eaters, or brain intelligence for Prevagen. Finding unique, creative and editorial ways to integrate the advertisers has been a stop gap for any erosion we would have in the advertising space.

RI: Selling cassettes out of your garage takes special motivation not to just give up and throw in the towel. What would you say to people who think they have something great to keep it going?
Tesh: I have a speech of Martin Luther King Jr. always playing in my head. You don't have to see the whole staircase, just take the first step in faith. I think too many of us think scalability first, and then think content second. It's figuring out what people want. It is pretty easy to figure out when you go on Facebook and see what people are conversing about. Find something that is not a commodity. Music is becoming a commodity for obvious reasons. News is becoming a commodity. Looks at CNN's ratings. They are horrible right now. Things like sports is not a commodity because it's live, it's exciting, and it changes all the time. Inspiration will never be a commodity, because we need it everyday. If you can find something that is inspiring, and something that has mission and purpose, you will find a tribe that will move with you. It's like a foundation, you build that first, and think only about how am I going to be helping people, it's amazing how fast that can aggregate and build.

Big F'in deal. I've been on the same station for 42 years. When do I get my article. Oh, I'm sorry, I'm a peon, a foot soldier. If it wasn't for ham and eggers like me getting up at 3 every morning in every type of weather, thru all types of challenges like my wife in ICU or me with the runs, or a form of MD, without a support staff to write my jokes, news, sports, weather and ad libs, no engineer, no nothing, ReAL radio, let's see stains like Tesh try that for 10 days... there'd be no John Tesh 10 year anni's without in the trenches, small town jox like me and a thousand others...what a joke.

Beasley Manager Celebrates 40 Years On The Job

Growing up, Danny Highsmith wanted to be a on the radio as a sportscaster and when he got that opportunity in 1971 it didn't take him long to realize the money he was making was not going to be enough to feed his family. So he turned his focus to management and he's never looked back. Yesterday Highsmith celebrated 40 years with Beasley Broadcasting, 32 of those as a Manager.  Today he's the Regional Vice President for Beasley's Fayetteville, NC cluster.

Highsmith started out at a 1000 watt station that George Beasley owned in Fayetteville. After the company purchased WKML-FM (a 100,000 watt powerhouse), he as promoted to GM.  In 2001, after three more stations were purchased in the market, he was promoted again, this time to market manager. And in 2007 he accepted the position of Regional Vice President. He's had a long-time love affair with the radio business. "I recently told George Beasley that 99% of the time in the last 40 years I've enjoyed coming to work.  And, for me it's been very, very important to work with wonderful people who want the station(s) to succeed as much as I do.  Most of the time I have been blessed with a very talented team of people that I would call winners."

Highsmith tells Radio Ink his longevity has a lot to do with his skills being a good match for the company. "George Beasley and his family have been very good to me?and, I think I have been very good to them.  When I first became a GM in the early to mid 70?s, George gave me enough rope to either be successful or hang myself.  Since I?m still around, I assume I was somewhat successful.  I grew up in Fayetteville, NC; I knew a lot of people and a lot of people knew me, which did not hurt me in this business.  As I mentioned, George gave me a lot of latitude and I managed the station (later stations as a Market Manager) as if they were mine.  I was always comfortable living and working in this market and, for the most part, never even considered moving to another market.  I have often wondered if my career would have been more fulfilling if I had worked in larger markets, but at this point I?ll never know."

We asked Highsmith to share his philosophy on managing people. "Communicate with them; encourage them; make sure they know you are standing behind them and manage by walking around; make sure they know everyone in the station must be on the same team.
T E A M is something I truly believe:
T?together?everyone has to work together to get anything done (programming with production; sales with programming; sales with production; sales and programming with Traffic and everyone with the G&A department.
E?effort and enthusiasm?all team members need to give 100% effort and work with enthusiasm
A?attitude?by attitude, I mean Positive Attitude.
M?make our customers happy!  We have two sets of customers?the ones that are our listeners and the ones that purchase our advertising.  Both need to be equally happy if we are to have a successful team.

Every GM has a different personality and a different way of motivating.  The one common denominator, in my opinion, is that a successful GM MUST BE A PEOPLE PERSON.  Without good people it is difficult to be successful in radio or any other business (my opinion)

Highsmith says it feels very good to be celebrating 40 years in radio and "I hope I?m still contributing in some way to the success of our company." Congratulate Danny Highsmith on his 40th anniversary in radio...

Now if I could only learn to make this spellchecker work.!!
(11/2/2011 5:40:58 AM)
COngratulations to my first manager!! Danny, you always inspried me. When I started with you at WFAI in Fayetteville, I was a longhaired kid who rode his bike to work because I didn't have a driver's license yet! We used to joke when we reduced the power at night, there were light bulbs with more power...but it was a wonderful adventure and the perfect introduction to what has been a very exciting career for me. My best to you and the rest of the Beasley gang! If I was wearing a hat, I would tip it now! Bob Brandon Charlotte NC

WPDH Celebrates 35 Years...In The Same Format

It would be a cool to know how many radio stations across the country have programmed the same format for 35 years or more. We're guessing not a lot. WPDH-FM, a cumulus station in the Hudson Valley of New York is one of them. This past Saturday in celebration of their anniversary the station executed some pretty awesome radio. And, thanks to the Internet, we were able to listen in.

WPDH morning man Mark Cooper (Coop) worked the early Saturday morning shift and the station played a lot of clips from past morning shows. Program Direoctor Gary Cee was was also able to dig up some retro commercials from an October 1976 air check he found online. "I invited about a dozen of our former announcers back to host two-hour programs, and if they couldn?t make it here live, they sent in their breaks via email.  Charlie Kendall, the voice of the station for many years, voiced the production elements." Cee has been the PD at WPDH for 8 years now after programming WLIR on Long Island frmo 1998 to 2003.

We asked Cee about the conistency of the station. 35 years is a long time. Cee says its all about serving the community.  "The Hudson Valley ? listeners and clients alike ? have always had a deep connection to this radio station. WPDH has always prided itself on serving the community, not just with great rock music, but with worthy fund-raising events like our Roofathon every summer and our Camp Out For Kids event in December. The Muscular Dystrophy Association, the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation, the Salvation Army, the Alzheimer?s Foundation, the Vassar Brothers Medical Center Foundation, and  the Hudson Valley Renegades Pitch for Kids Foundation have all benefited in the past from WPDH. This fall, we?ll be doing our Fifth Annual Bikers for Babies Bike Rally with Dee Snider to benefit the March of Dimes. In November, we air our Let?s Go Vets Weekend, and we invite veterans to come down to the station and host an hour program, playing their music and telling  their stories."

Cee said the 35th anniversary special made him feel great. "Radio is such a personal, one-on-one medium.  I?m certain we tweaked some special memories for listeners this weekend ? and hearing one of your favorite announcers from the past is just bound to bring back memories of that special time when you graduated high school or college or fell in love for the first time, or got married, whatever the situation." Cee's advice to PD's and GM's on how to consistently win year after year in the same format? "Have a strong promotions department, and SERVE the community.  We?re lucky to have Anthony Verano here, who?s our Promotions and Marketing Director as well as being tremendously tech-savvy, so he?s also overseeing the website.  Keep it local, have great promotions and play the music the community wants to hear."

E-Mail Congrats to Cee at gary.cee@cumulus.com
