Foundation To Honor Smith, NAB

NAB President/CEO Gordon Smith and the organization he leads will be the 2015 recipients of the Broadcasters Foundation of America's Golden Mike Award, to be presented in a black-tie fundraising gala on February 23, 2015, at the Plaza Hotel in New York. Broadcasters Foundation Chairman Philip J. Lombardo says, "Gordon's accomplishments for broadcasters are widely recognized across our profession, but perhaps many are not aware of Gordon's tireless efforts on behalf of the mission of the Broadcasters Foundation to help our colleagues in need."

Lombardo continues, "Gordon's influence has raised awareness of the foundation's charitable mission, and his commitment to helping those in our business who need it most has been admirable.  We are honored to have Gordon on our board and to recognize his dedication to our purpose with the 2015 Golden Mike Award."

Broadcasters Foundation President Jim Thompson adds, "The NAB is always at the forefront of advocacy for broadcasters' interests. Their task is often daunting, yet they persevere, providing legislative guidance and educational programs to advance broadcast radio and television. The NAB has provided the Broadcasters Foundation with platforms to helps us generate awareness about our mission, and we are thankful for that support.  With the 2015 Golden Mike Award, we recognize their contribution."

Smith called it a "privilege to represent this industry of charitable, giving professionals." He goes on, "I am awed by the number of broadcasters who come forward to help their colleagues through the foundation's work.  I'd like to thank the board of directors for this recognition, and I would ask all broadcasters to please consider your good fortune and help those in our profession who, through no fault of their own, have fallen on the hardest of times."

Before joining the NAB in 2009, Smith served as a two-term U.S. senator from Oregon and later as senior adviser in the Washington, DC, offices of Covington & Burling, LLP. While in the Senate, Smith was on the Senate Commerce, Science and Transportation Committee, which oversees all broadcast-related legislation.

Greater Media Boston Gets Hospital Honor

Greater Media?s Country 102.5 (WKLB-FM) has been recognized for the station?s ongoing  support of Tufts Floating Hospital for Children in Boston. Pictured here are Greater Media CEO Peter Smyth and PD Mike Brophey. An area called The Healing Garden was officially opened and named in honor of the station. The Country 102.5 Healing Garden will be home to country music artists who visit Floating Hospital to perform for kids as part of the Country 102.5 Healing Tour. The Healing Garden will be a place where children can feel like kids, not just patients. WKLB has hosted many concerts over the past few years to raise money for the Healing Garden. Recently, a special show featuring Hunter Hayes raised $40,000.

Cumulus To Honor Bob Grant On WABC

This weekend, 77 WABC Radio will broadcast a special program dedicated to the late on-air talk show host, Saturday at 5 p.m. and Sunday at 4 p.m. Grant worked for WABC from 1984-1996 and again weekly from 2009-2013. The broadcast will feature notable moments from the talk show host as well as comments from broadcasters inspired by Grant and his family. WABC Program Director Craig Schwalb said, ?WABC is proud to produce this special to honor the late Bob Grant, a true legend in our industry. We hope our listeners will enjoy this opportunity to remember his contribution to WABC and to the city of New York.?

Nevada Broadcasters to Honor Beasley's Tom Humm

Beasley Las Vegas VP/GM Tom Humm will be honored by the Nevada Broadcasters Association with its Lifetime Achievement award at the NBA?s18th annual gala tomorrow night. NBA CEO Bob Fischer said, ?Tom?s career is one that anyone would be proud to call their own. During his 35 years of dedication to broadcasting in our community, he has epitomized honesty, integrity and going the extra mile. That is, no doubt, exemplified by his extensive client list, many of whom have been with him during much of his career.?

During his 35 years in the broadcasting industry, Tom Humm has been a part of numerous teams of broadcasters who have provided more than $50 million in public service announcements and appearances for charitable and youth organizations. Humm also played a pivotal role in the formation and professionalization of the Nevada Broadcasters Association. He turned 60 on Friday.

Humm worked his way up from being an account executive at 98.5 KLUC in 1978 to becoming general manager of KXTZ 94.1 FM in 1984, a position he held until 1991, at which time he departed to become the general manager of KEYV/KFMS. He returned to KLUC as general manager in 1993 under Nationwide Communications, which sold its radio properties to American Radio Systems; as a result, Humm inherited the general manager duties of KLUC, KVEG (now KXNT), and KXNO (now KXST).

On June 4, 1998, CBS acquired American Radio System?s six Las Vegas radio properties, transferring Humm to KMZQ/KMXB as GM and market manager of the six CBS Las Vegas stations. He then left CBS in 2008 to assume the duties of market manager for Beasley Broadcasting, which owns and operates KKLZ-FM, KCYE-FM, and KDWN-AM.

In September of 2010, Beasley Broadcasting assumed the management oversight of GGB stations, KOAS-FM and KVGS-FM, and Humm was assigned GM responsibilities of those stations as well as given a long-term contract.

Established in 1961, the Nevada Broadcasters Association is dedicated to protecting, promoting, enhancing and strengthening Nevada?s broadcast industry to more effectively serve the public.

Foundation To Honor Stanley Hubbard

Hubbard Broadcasting Chairman Stanley Hubbard will be honored with the Lowry Mays Excellence in Broadcasting Award by the Broadcasters Foundation of America. The award will be presented during the foundation's annual breakfast on April 10, at the Wynn Hotel in Las Vegas, which is held in conjunction with the NAB Show.

Hubbard's industry accomplishments include overseeing the building of the first successful UHF television station in a VHF market; with others in the Hubbard organization, creating the world?s first satellite news-gathering organization; and establishing U.S. Satellite Broadcasting (USSB). Broadcasting & Cable labeled him ?the father of satellite broadcasting,? and he is a charter member of their Hall of Fame. He is a recipient of the Satellite Broadcasting Communications Association?s Arthur C. Clarke Award, the National Association of Broadcasters? Distinguished Service award, the University of Minnesota M Club Lifetime Achievement award, and more.

Hubbard owns 13 television and 17 radio stations, F&F Productions REELZCHANNEL ? TV About Movies?, and is the controlling shareholder of Ovation TV. The Lowry Mays Excellence in Broadcasting Award honors an individual in broadcasting whose work exemplifies innovation, community service, advocacy, and entrepreneurship. It salutes its namesake Lowry Mays and is underwritten by The Clear Channel Foundation and Wiley Rein, LLP.

NAB Vegas to Honor Troops

The National Association of Broadcasters and ThanksUSA announced today a country music benefit concert to kick off the NAB Show in Las Vegas, Sunday, April 15 at 7:30 p.m., in support of military families. The concert will take place at the Encore Theater in the Wynn Hotel and feature Rodney Atkins (pictured) and a performance by Texas and Nashville singer-songwriter Lucas Hoge.

NAB President and CEO Gordon Smith said, "These dynamic performers are sure to be a hit with NAB Show attendees. The concert is also a wonderful opportunity for our attendees to give back by supporting America's military families who have given so much for our country." The event is part of ThanksUSA's mission to provide spouses and children of active duty men and women with need-based post-secondary educational scholarships. Since ThanksUSA's inception in 2006, the organization has awarded 2,500 scholarships to military families, for a total value of nearly $7.5 million.

As a token of appreciation to Las Vegas' active duty military, ThanksUSA will invite 400 families from nearby Nellis Air Force Base to attend the concert. In addition, tickets will be available for all NAB Show attendees at the door for a charitable donation of $20.

"I am so grateful for everything our soldiers do and the sacrifices they make on a daily basis. It's my honor to do anything I can to support them and their families, especially through a great cause like ThanksUSA," said Atkins. "The importance of education in this country is paramount, and ThanksUSA provides just that by offering scholarships for higher education to the husbands, wives and kids of service members."

(AUDIO) Radio Stations Across America Honor Whitney Houston

The outpouring of prayers, thoughts, feelings and condolences was immediate and overwhelming according to KISS-FM Program Director Jay Dixon. The Emmis station was paying tribute to Whitney Houston immediately upon hearing of her tragic death in Beverly Hills. Listeners and fans were calling in to the station in disbelief as the weekend staff took calls and played Houston's music. We spoke to Dixon yesterday about the death of Whitney Houston and how the New York station was interacting with listeners and Houston fans being just a few miles away from where the pop icon grew up in New Jersey. Dixon says, "there will never be another Whitney."

Houston was found dead in a hotel room in Beverly Hills. She was in town for the Grammy awards. The Grammy awards are tonight in L.A. and will be seen on CBS. Houston was 48. Listen to KISS in New York  HERE

ABC and Cumulus Sending out Whitney Houston Special
It's called ?Remembering Whitney Houston.? This one-hour special celebrates the life and talent of Houston through her music and is programmed for music formats.  It will be available for in-market broadcast at 1pm local time today via ABC XDS and http://www.abcnewscall.com/   There is no network inventory associated with clearing this program, although affiliates must notify Dennis Green dennis.green@cumulus.com  or Marcella Turk marcella.turk@cumulus.com in advance of their intent to clear this show and to receive channel information.

- Geno Jones of WCSC in Charleston will dedicate his entire drive time show today to Houston. Jones grew up in Chicago, which is where he first crossed paths with Whitney Houston at a 1985 listening party for her first album.

- The Lifetime cable channel will air one of her most popular films, The Bodyguard, co-starring Kevin Costner, on Monday at 8 p.m. ET/PT.

- A Whitney Houston Tribute Channel popped up today at 3 p.m. ET on SiriusXM channel 48. It will run through 11:59 p.m. ET Monday

In Birmingham, WUHT (Hot 1077) began playing Whitney Houston songs and taking phone calls as well right after the news broke and was still doing it late last night. Tasha Simone and John Long were hosting the coverage.

City Of Hope To Honor Pittman

December 6, 2011: City of Hope, the research and treatment center for cancer, diabetes,and other diseases, has selected Clear Channel Communications CEO Bob Pittman to receive its 2012 Spirit of Life Award. The award is presented each year to an entertainment-industry leader "who has demonstrated outstanding business and altruistic achievement."

Pittman said, "I am honored to be the recipient of this year's award and to use the power of radio, Internet, and music and entertainment for such a worthy cause. It is a privilege to represent the unparalleled work of City of Hope and all those who have been or will be affected by cancer and other life-threatening diseases."

Clear Channel and City of Hope will team on a six-month fundraising initiative designed to use Clear Channel Radio's reach to "showcase the power that radio has in communities across the country by engaging local listeners to action. The premise of the drive is to use music to incite emotion and evoke hope for the millions of people suffering from cancer and other critical diseases."

Pittman will receive the award at a gala in May, with proceeds benefiting City of Hope.

City of Hope Sr. Director/Development Britta Bucholz said, "Bob Pittman embodies all that the Spirit of Life Award represents, and Clear Channel has been a longtime supporter of our initiatives, including Pink Channel, Play for Life, Taste of Hope, and a variety of online auctions. Fox Sports L.A. To Honor Vets With Radiothon

Country Radio Seminar is honoring the perpetual crisis management efforts of Country radio with its ?Radio Responds: A Tribute to Country Radio? presentation at CRS 2012.
