Cumulus News To Be Powered By CNN

7-31-14

It's a new Westwood One news service that will be powered by CNN?s news-gathering resources. This new service will offer stations access to broadcasts, breaking news, wire service, and digital content provided by CNN for use on the air and on websites. Westwood One has 10,000 radio affiliates in the United States, and owns STORQ technology that provides a local feel to syndicated content. The addition of this new service will enable local radio stations to broadcast the latest national and international news acquired by CNN but branded with their own call letters and station slogans.

As an example of how the new ?white label? news format will sound on the air, Country format stations operating under the NASH brand created by Cumulus will introduce ?NASH News? segments. Cumulus CEO Lew Dickey says, ?Our affiliates and advertising partners know they can count on us for news and information products that reflect how people today consume content through various platforms, and this exclusive access to CNN?s newsgathering will ensure we can provide stations nationwide an unmatched array of news formats.?

"People that are serious about the business of news are in business with CNN,? said Ed Stephen, senior vice president and general manager for CNN Newsource. ?We look forward to helping Cumulus build a world-class radio news service."

We had a chance to interview Thoreson about his book, his techniques and how radio stations can recruit, hire and compensate superstar salespeople in 2012. Our interview is 30 minutes long. It can also be downloaded from iTunes as a Podcast to your smartphone if your interested in listening on the go. Listen to our interview HERE or download from our iTunes page.

"How To Recruit High Powered Salespeople" ought to be a question and not a headline.

Here's how.....give'em something to sell and pay'em well.

(11/22/2011 11:25:24 AM)
This industry has systematically bled the life out of every rep and sales manager over the last several years. Does anyone want to argue this point?

To whom is this article/podcast directed--the disconnected, absent owners? Certainly NOT anyone tasked with finding and retaining top sales talent in the radio industry.

Please stop peddling this crap; it confuses upper management into thinking they CAN find/train/retain superstars while paying them minimum wage.

Get real.

The Radio stations I successfully managed in Yakima Washington from 1987-2000 had a staff of 12 sellers and two sales managers. We paid 20% on direct local business...15% of agency business...and 22% on new business. We were the cash-flow king of the market.

Today that same group of stations (after Corporate America screwed them up)now pays 12.5% on local direct business, and 10.5% on agency business. That group of stations is also down to six sellers and one sales manager. Super-star sellers want and expect to be compensated fairly. You will not retain, let alone recruit quality sales people when you care more about your shareholders than you do your employees and the community you are entrusted to serve. New AOL Radio Unveiled Powered By Slacker

AOL has relaunched the newly redesigned AOL Radio which is now powered by Slacker and has 50% less audio advertising. New custom artist stations have also been added along with ESPN Radio and AOL?s 200+ stations. AOL Music & AOL Radio GM Lisa Namerow says, ?When AOL Radio announced its partnership with Slacker this summer we anticipated greatly improved web and mobile products, but what we?re giving listeners today is a completely new AOL Radio experience that exceeds our most optimistic expectations. Since many of our updates were driven by user feedback, we think our current listeners will be thrilled with the new offering. New listeners will be surprised at the evolution of AOL Radio and its vast programming choices now matched up with expansive features.

Slacker CEO Jim Cady says, ?we are excited to be able to bring the benefits of the Slacker Radio service, already enjoyed by tens of millions of listeners, to the fans of AOL Radio. Combining the power of Slacker Radio with the programming and breadth of content AOL Radio listeners are accustomed to makes for an exciting personal radio experience.?

AOL Radio powered by Slacker will continue to offer over 200 radio stations programmed by AOL Radio music directors. These professional music curators are award-winning DJs and music critics with decades of experience and knowledge that spans the full breadth of music. On top of this, the relaunched service offers new stations, including popular non-music programming like ESPN Radio with more to come, including ABC News.

Next month, in addition to the free service that is available today, AOL Radio powered by Slacker will offer two subscription products for users who want an even richer and more customizable listening experience.  Radio Plus will feature completely ad-free listening without audio or banner advertisements, as well as unlimited song skips, song lyrics, and offline listening for mobile. Premium Radio will have all the features of Radio Plus as well as on-demand listening by song, album, artist or custom playlist.

AOL Radio powered by Slacker for the web is now available at www.aolradio.com. The free AOL Radio by Slacker App for iPhone/iPad/iPod Touch can be downloaded for free at the Apple App Store (http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/aol-radio/id281913144). A new app for Android is expected later this year.
