(AUDIO) L.A. Podcast Festival Is This Weekend

10-1-13
It's a growing form of entertainment. Audio on demand. The podcast. We've seen Steve Dahl have great success at it as well as Adam Corolla. Even radio talent are loading content into podcasts these days so their listeners can listen at the gym, in their car, or while on vacation. They can listen when they want, where they want. This weekend, podcasters from all over the country will converge on the Le M?ridien Delfina Santa Monica Hotel for the L.A. Podcast Festival. Chris Mancini (pictured) from Comedy Film Nerds is one of the organizers.

The three-day event includes a Saturday night stand-up comedy PodSmash including Marc Maron, panel discussions for podcasters of all levels, and a Podcating lab. Mancini calls podcasting an emerging art form and expects between 600 and 800 people to attend the event. We spoke to Mancini about the festival, the most popular podcasters, who's generating revenue at podcasting, and where this art form is headed. Listen to our interview HERE. Check out the festival website HERE.

The top-ranked comedy podcast on iTunes is called, "Welcome to Night Vale." It's a podcast done about twice every month for about 30 minutes. Mancini says the folks behind that podcast will be at his show.
And if you were wondering who owns the top-ranked business podcast on iTunes...it's Dave Ramsey.

(PODCAST) Why Does TV ALWAYS Get The Buy Before Radio?

Download this show

10/2/2012

Most big advertising agencies we interview say when placing buys, Television will always come before radio. It's just a fact of life. TV is more glamorous. Agencies get to be more creative. They need to see pictures. At the same time, advertising agencies rave about how quickly they can change their radio ads, to meet the needs of their clients. They also love the price, which translates to cheap. In today's Radio Ink Sales meeting Podcast, we speak to Drew Conklin and Guy Jacobssen of the Tombras Group in Knoxsville. They are big fans of radio and use it often. So, we wanted to know if there was anything radio could do change the thinking that TV must always come first.

Listen to our interview with Drew Jacobssen and Drew Conkline from the Tombras Group HERE

Our thanks to South Central Media VP/GM Terry Gillingham for introducing Radio Ink to The Tombras Group.

(10/2/2012 6:55:25 AM)
It is my experience both in field and in conversations with Agency execs that the reason that TV is bought first is that it is THE MOST EXPENSIVE. Agencies can spend the media budget fastest on TV with the smallest expense in staff. Radio takes significant time and staffing because it is cheap. The solution is, and has always been: Rais the rates.

Talbott is a former radio salesperson who advanced through the radio ranks to General Manager before starting his own advertising agency. We asked Talbott about the importance of relationships, the length of stopsets, whether radio has an understanding of digital, and how he utilizes radio for his clients. Talbott says, among other things, radio commercials are not very creative and the industry has become a slave to the quarter hour.

(SALES MEETING PODCAST) Understand How Agencies Think To Get More of The Buy

Download this show

8/15/2012

Like it or not, until radio changes the way it is rated, agencies all across the country are going to set the rules for how much money they spend with us. You can play the CPP and added value game their way or you walk and leave money on the table. To at least be considered for more of a buy it's important to know what these agencies are thinking of us as a medium and you as a rep. What do they expect from you and are you delivering that? Why are we treated differently than TV? How can you really pitch them digital so you are getting additional money and not just bringing a digital order back to the station that you would have gotten with spots anyway.

In this weeks Radio Ink Sales Meeting Podcast, we spoke with Kara Hocking, the owner of Hocking Media in Detroit. Hocking spent over 25 years at an advertising agency in Troy before opening up her own shop in 2008. Her accounts included Blue Cross Blue Shield and Comercia which accounted for over $30 Million annually.

In our interview Hocking says she uses radio to great success for her clients because of radio's ability to engage the consumer. On what radio salespeople need to improve, she doesn't hesitate, "customer service." She believes radio plays too many commercials, it's more difficult to track than Pandora, Clear Channel should sell ads on iHeartradio should sell ads and reps do not understand how to speak the language of digital.

Here is our interview with Kara Hocking of Hocking Media.

8/6/2012

In today's (30 minute) Sales Meeting Podcast we spoke to Paula Hambrick. Hambrick is the CEO of Hambrick and Associates, a very well-know and successful advertising agency in Chicago. Hambrick is a big fan of radio and spends a significant amount of money on the medium. We asked her to be brutally honest about how radio can increase its share of the revenue pie, why political candidates buy more TV than radio, the impact our ratings service has on buys and much more. Hambrick's number one piece of advice for all of you, "Stop apologizing for being in radio."

100% agree...very smart conversation with a very polished professional.
(8/6/2012 12:53:14 PM)
Frankly, she nailed it! This is a podcast that should be shared and saved. Maybe a transcript should be printed, too. There's stuff that EVERY sales rep, sales manager and owner should have drilled into their heads!
Portable, flexible, free to customer, how you gonna do that internet stuff while you're driving? And copy changes without TV production charges. She even tells us how to sell 'without ratings'. This was a great podcast...too bad thousands in our industry won't take the time to listen to it!

(PODCAST) The Carolla Comparison

7-23-2012

By Brian Baltosiewich

A few weeks ago, I got to talk to Adam Carolla about podcasting, for the print edition of Radio Ink that was distributed at the Convergence Conference in June. I'm going to write in depth about my talk with Carolla in the next couple weeks, but there's something I think that needs to be addressed regarding my discussion with him first.

I don't have to tell you that Carolla is considered the top of the pile when it comes to podcasting -- it's his name that comes up in nearly every conversation about podcasting -- and that's all earned. He is what every podcaster aspires to be.

But that shouldn't be the case. Adam Carolla, for all his success, for as good as he is at what he is doing, is just like you and me. Stick with me on this.

Talking to Adam Carolla is just what you might think it would be. I don't know if he was "on" for the interview, or if he's just always "on" but his tangents and rants were quick and funny during our 25-minute conversation -- and inside those rants was great insight into who he is and his philosophy towards podcasting and his success.

At one point he said podcasting wasn't "rocket science." He went on "it's not even science science?it's whatever kind of science I would have been good at in high school."

That's when it clicked for me. I'm not sure Carolla understands why, for most of us, it really is "rocket science."

Here's the thing. I don't think he gets it. I don't think he understands that for the vast majority of us, it IS rocket science.

Carolla opened up his tent in April of 2009 and a quarter of a million people walked in. Imagine that for a moment, then think about how you would look at that statistic and wonder why everyone can't be successful at this thing. For Adam Carolla, this is "easy." He works hard at it, I know that -- his work ethic is legendary and he's very good at what he does.

But he hasn't had to scrape by. After that first show he never sat in front of his mic and wondered if he was talking to himself.

And here's where it gets weird. You're playing on the exact same field Carolla is.

Carolla, in addition to a handful of paid advertisers, has all the same affiliate agreements the rest of us have. Amazon, Pro Flowers, Sheri's Berries, Go Daddy, Legal Zoom?yadda yadda yadda. Here's the difference: When Carolla does a live read for Amazon and five percent of his audience goes to Amazon and buys something?that's 2,500 listeners spending money at Amazon and sending a percentage of that purchase Carolla's way.

What Carolla has that the rest of us covet, is volume. Sheer, huge, massive numbers. Does it help that he's Adam Carolla? Of course. Again, I'm not discounting that.

All I am saying is that comparing yourself to Carolla and getting frustrated when you don't have what he has is unfair to yourself. You're not Adam Carolla, and the best thing is you don't have to be.

Just be yourself. Be consistent, be there when you say you are going to be there and you will develop an audience. Be a relentless self-promoter. Use other ways to reach out to your audience from terrestrial radio and grow your audience virally. Keep making personal appearances, tell everyone you meet about your podcast. Develop a relationship with the media critics and writers in the markets you worked in and see if you can get them to write about your podcast. Make promoting yourself your full-time job. The podcast part? You can do that in your sleep, that's the easy par, the part you were born for. The hard work is in getting the word out.

Do me this favor: Stop comparing yourself and every other podcaster to Adam Carolla. Just do your thing. Let Carolla do his.

It's a great big Internet and there's room enough for all of us.

(PODCAST) The Only Connection To A Community

Download this show

7-18-2012

(by Ed Ryan) One of the great things about this job is that nearly every day I get to meet, and talk to, great radio operators all over the country. Not only do they produce great local radio every day, you can tell there is no other job in the world they'd rather be doing. Craig Swimm is the General Manager of WMAS in Springfield, Massachusetts, and John Wharff is the President of WMOA in Marietta, Ohio. They don't run a cluster of stations or have million dollar budgets (not that there's anything wrong with that). They have one station, one staff, and one goal: to be great at radio. You're going to want to listen to this hour because Swimm and Wharff tell great stories about how they connect with their local communities. And as you'll quickly figure out, if you're doing it like they are, it's something that can never be duplicated by any other media or replaced by the latest mind-blowing digital app. Listen to our Podcast HERE

And after you listen, send the guys a digital high-five for a job well done.
Craig.Swimm@cumulus.com and Jwharff@wmoa1490.com

(7/19/2012 2:32:36 PM)
They said TV would kill radio. It thrived. They called Sirius and XM the "Death Star" for radio. It thrived. I'm a full-time Chief Engineer for a heavily community involved AM/FM in a smaller community. They didn't EVER say "the sky is falling." With a full-time technical staff (unheard of these days), outstanding facilities and serving their community (think I read somewhere we're supposed to do that) they have thrived. Social media is just another tool to serve their community.
(7/19/2012 12:01:45 PM)
Chuck:

You are right about one thing, social media is very good at inciting a "flash mob" at the local Wal-Mart. If local radio is being done right, like it is by Craig and John, Social Media just becomes one of their tools. Local Radio can never be matched. Granted, not everyone does it like these two.

Ed

(7/19/2012 11:57:35 AM)
I think both comments make relevant points. However, every industry changes, grows and evolves. Local radio is experiencing all of that and will come out the other side a stronger medium. Look at broadcast TV...it has survivied Cable, satellite and corporate consolidation making the necessary adaptions to move forward in this new age.
(7/19/2012 11:47:10 AM)
As soon as I saw your headline I knew we had another person with their head stuck in the sand. The BEST connection to a local community now is social media. Almost every town & city... large and small... has local pages on Topix, Facebook, etc where local residents get real time running commentary on what is happening in their community from house fires, traffic delays, car wrecks, gossip, politics, weather, etc. I used to listen to News/Talk radio 5+ hours a day... now I might catch an hour and I do that on Sirius/XM. Radio is rapidly becoming irrelevent. And yes I AM a station owner.
(7/19/2012 11:07:35 AM)
You write: "They don't run a cluster of stations or have million dollar budgets (not that there's anything wrong with that). They have one station, one staff, and one goal: to be great at radio."

The problem is that the corporations that own the vast majority of stations these days have a very different goal: to maximize shareholder value.

That may not be fundamentally incompatible with making great radio, but it sure seems to be. And, yeah, I'd say there IS something wrong with that.
