SiriusXM Reports 14% Revenue Increase

11-1-2012

Checking in with third quarter record revenue, SiriusXM says it generated $867 million for the months of July, August and September. The company also added 446K subscribers to push its total to 23.4 million. Net income for the quarter, after a debt extinguishment charge, was $75 million and free cash flow was up 159% to $195 million. Outgoing CEO Mel Karmazin said "The Company has produced more free cash flow in the first nine months of this year than in any full year in its history, and we've used this cash to reduce our debt to its lowest level since the merger of Sirius and XM."

Karmazin added, "We're excited about the increase in subscriber guidance to 1.8 million net additions that we reported earlier this month, as we believe growth in the fourth quarter will continue.  We continue to make investments across our business, particularly in R&D, customer care, infrastructure, and programming.  We are also investing in new businesses, such as the telematics service we announced in the third quarter with Nissan, and we believe these investments will reward our shareholders in the years to come."

WFAN Makes Big Move Today

11-1-2012

For 25 years, four months and one day, WFAN made its radio home solely on the AM dial. Today was the first day the station was heard on FM. At 12:01 a.m., WFAN launched its simulcast on 101.9 FM. Appropriately, the first voice heard was Suzyn Waldman. Waldman was a guest of Steve Somers. She was one of the first voices ever heard on the station 25 years ago. She told Somers, ?Thanks for having me do this. This was fun. It?s just very exciting.?

Last month, CBS radio announced it had signed a definitive agreement to purchase 101.9 FM from Merlin Media for $75 million. WFAN pioneered the all-sports format when it launched on July 1, 1987, becoming the first radio station where listeners could hear and talk about sports 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. It's the flagship station for the New York Giants, New York Mets, Brooklyn Nets and New Jersey Devils.

Day Three. 19% of Cell Towers Still Down

11-2-2012

The East Coast continues to recover from the destruction of Hurricane Sandy. One of the issues the area is still deadling with is the communication infrastructure. FCC Chairman Julius Genachowski says a lot of work still needs to be done. "The supply of fuel to generators is essential to keep communications service up and running, and we?re working with federal, state, and local authorities to speed fuel delivery. This is a priority because our commercial communications networks are essential to emergency response and recovery efforts, as well as to commercial activities and connecting with family.?

FCC Public Safety & Homeland Security Bureau Chief David Turetsky says ?Based on data from Thursday morning, the number of cell site outages overall has declined from approximately 25 percent to 19 percent. This figure includes many cases where cell sites that are otherwise operational are effectively inoperable because of outages in other parts of the communications infrastructure, which is highly interdependent." Turetsky says restoration efforts in the hardest hit areas ? including New York and New Jersey ? continues to be more difficult. Replenishing fuel supplies for generators that are enabling communications networks to continue operating is a particularly critical challenge.

KDKA Pittsburgh Gets a New PD

11-1-2012

Ryan Maguire, who currently serves as the PD for 610 Sportsradio KCSP in Kansas City will take over KDKA duties on November 26th. In addition to his work at KCSP over the past three years, Maguire also served as the Program Director for Sportsradio 1250 WSSP in Milwaukee along with working in the same capacity at Sportstalk 1050 WTKA in Ann Arbor.

CBS Pittsburgh Market Manager Michael Young says, ?Ryan has a very impressive track record in programming sports radio stations. He has produced strong ratings, and successfully developed a number of dynamic on-air sports personalities.  Furthermore, Ryan has an uncompromising passion for sports, and his leadership will well serve Pittsburgh sports fans.?

?I?m thrilled to have the opportunity and privilege to be a part of Sportsradio 93-7 The Fan in Pittsburgh,? said Maguire.  ?Western Pennsylvania is home to some of the most loyal and passionate fans in the country, and I?m looking forward to seeing KDKA-FM continue to be a big part of their sports experience.?

(11/2/2012 10:46:13 AM)
Now if they could get rid of Michael Young there could be some real hope for the cluster.

But the teflon man stays..never underestimate the power of kissing the proper ass.

How has CBS's Pittsburgh market share gone for the last 5 years again..?

Math doesn't lie.

KROQ's Bean to Donate Kidney to Friend

11-1-2012

Gene ?Bean? Baxter of the "Kevin and Bean" morning show heard on CBS's KROQ in Los Angeles announced yesterday he'll be donating a kidney to Director of Engineering Scott Mason (pictured). Mason has been with the company since 1979. This will be his second kidney transplant. His first was in 1999.  On November 13, the two will go to Cedars Sinai, one of four hospitals in the country that have the ability to match Scott?s blood type to Bean?s blood type and give him the much needed organ.

Here's a portion of Bean's blog about the kidney donation.

"I?m going to be away from the Kevin & Bean show a few days here and there over the next two weeks as I prepare for and recover from a surgery to have one of my kidneys removed. I am donating it to a friend of mine, and maybe one of yours if you are a long time KROQ fan, named Scott Mason. Scott has worked for the station for a very long time, at one time as a DJ and programmer, and in recent years as the head of engineering."
"Scott has had medical issues for much of his adult life, including his kidneys failing, and that led him to have a transplant from a cadaver back in 1999. Well, now that one has failed too and Scott is back on dialysis for many hours a week. The kidney processes waste out of the blood and without one your body is being poisoned all the time. The dialysis helps but is a temporary solution. You only get off the machine if you get a new kidney or you die."

Read the entire blog HERE. You can hear the two men discuss the issue on the air at the bottom of the page.
