There's A New Talker In Pittsburgh

Salem Media Group announced that once it closes on its $1 million transaction to purchase Radio Disney's WDDZ/Pittsburgh this week, it will launch a new conservative talk station, using the company branding of The Answer. The new station, AM 1250 The Answer, will have mostly syndicated hosts from the Salem Radio Network, plus Westwood One's Mark Levin Show and one local host: former WPGB-FM personality Rose Tennent.

The new host line-up for AM 1250 The Answer will be:
Bill Bennett:  6:00am-8:00am
Rose Tennent:  8:00am-10:00am
Mike Gallagher:  10:00am-Noon
Dennis Prager:  Noon-3:00pm
Michael Medved:  3:00pm-6:00pm
Mark Levin:  6:00pm-9:00pm
Hugh Hewitt:  9:00pm-Midnight

Clear Channel Turns Pittsburgh Talker To Country

After 10 years and eight months on the FM dial in Pittsburgh, another FM talker is moving back to AM. Clear Channel has flipped 104.7 to Country and Rush Limbaugh, Sean Hannity, and Glenn Beck will now be heard on WJAS-AM 1320, owned by Frank Iorio's Pittsburgh Radio Partners. Iorio recently purchased the station from Tony Renda for $1 million. Clear Channel will kick "Big 104.7" off with 10,000 songs in a row and feature the Bobby Bones morning show.

Clear Channel Pittsburgh VP David Edgar said, "It's a great day for Pittsburgh country music fans as we launch Big 104.7, a fresh new take on country music. This station will give our listeners a front-row seat to country's biggest artists and concerts. Listeners will also enjoy waking up with The Bobby Bones Show and his unique and entertaining insight on country music. No one is closer to the heart of Nashville than Bobby Bones."

WJAS-AM owner Iorio said, "We're excited to debut a lineup of this caliber, which will make WJAS-AM 1320 the ultimate destination for News/Talk in Pittsburgh. We look forward to providing listeners with a range of the best Talk programming, news, information, and commentary." WJAS-AM was playing a nostalgia format for the past decade. Local DJs Jack Bogut and Bill Cardille said their goodbyes on the air this week and Chris Shovlin also lost his evening show.

Benz Promoted in Pittsburgh

WXDX-FM morning host Tim Benz is now Sports Director for all of Clear Channel's Pittsburgh stations (WDVE-FM, WXDX-FM, WKST-FM, WWSW-FM, WPGB-FM and WBGG-AM). Benz will host a daily sports show on ESPN 970 and produce segments for the other stations. Benz has morning how host on WXDX since 2006. This resolution follows a second consecutive Top 5 finish for WPTS in MTVu?s ranking of the best college radio stations in the country. It also recognizes WPTS Radio?s decades-long history of providing University of Pittsburgh students with valuable hands-on experience in broadcasting and related fields, as well as providing the campus and the surrounding community with high-quality radio programming.

Steel City Media welcomes Zak Szabo as PD of Hot AC WLTJ-FM. With over 30 years of broadcast experience, Szabo has held positions as APD at WGHT in Baltimore, WXLK in Virginia, and WNVZ in Virginia Beach. Employees probably shouldn't mess with him. Szabo is a martial arts master possessing four black belts and is a member of ITF -- International Tang Soo Do Federation.

KDKA Pittsburgh Gets a New PD

Ryan Maguire, who currently serves as the PD for 610 Sportsradio KCSP in Kansas City will take over KDKA duties on November 26th. In addition to his work at KCSP over the past three years, Maguire also served as the Program Director for Sportsradio 1250 WSSP in Milwaukee along with working in the same capacity at Sportstalk 1050 WTKA in Ann Arbor.

CBS Pittsburgh Market Manager Michael Young says, ?Ryan has a very impressive track record in programming sports radio stations. Loved Pittsburgh DJ Ted Atkins Dies of Cancer

Charlie Kendall told Radio Ink last night, "Ted Atkins was the finest Program Director I've ever known. He is the biggest influence on how I tried to program later in my career. He was a coach, friend, motivator and mentor. My professional and personal life are richer for having been blessed to work with him for so many years. I am happy that he is free of pain. And I'm trying to get over my pain at his loss. I am one of the lucky ones who worked closely with Captain Showbiz. It is a unique and wonderful experience. God bless Ted and thank you, God, for letting me share so much time with this remarkable man.

Atkins began his radio career at KLAK in Denver in 1957. He had stops in Kansas City, Denver, Detroit's legendary CKLW, KFRC San Francisco and KHJ Los Angeles working for Bill Drake.

He's been in the radio industry for more than 14 years, beginning as an intern for WWSW. Salamon has had many roles with the Pittsburgh cluster from Account Executive to General Sales Manager.   Prior to joining Clear Channel Pittsburgh, Salamon worked in sales for Jet Broadcasting in Erie, Pa.

Pittsburgh Mayor Turns to Radio to Inform The Public.

Pittsburgh Mayor Luke Ravenstahl announced he'll be taping weekly radio addresses and airing them on NewsRadio KDKA. They will also be streamed on the City?s web and social media sites. Director of News/Talk Programming for KDKA Marshall Adams told Radio Ink "This is a unique and very direct way for the mayor to get his message to the people of Pittsburgh. This address is very similar to President Obama's weekly media address. Mayor Bloomberg in New York does something similar, and former Pennsylvania Governor Bob Casey did a weekly radio message too. Ideally we look forward on KDKA to being able to break news in his weekly addresses. Our mayor is very excited about this opportunity. If he chooses to run for re-election, we'll need to re-consider how we execute this under equal time rules.

?I am extremely excited to be given this opportunity to speak directly to citizens on topics that are important to them, such as the work we are doing to advance our City?s Third Renaissance,? Ravenstahl said. ?It is my goal that through these weekly addresses, our residents will not only become more aware of the work we are doing to improve their quality of life, but better understand the challenges that face City government.?
