Smyth Among Giants to be Honored

Greater Media CEO Peter Smyth, along with Pablo Raul Alarcon Sr. and Raul Alarcon Jr and several others will be honored this year at the annual Giants of Broadcasting luncheon on October 16. The Giants of Broadcasting event recognizes individuals "who have for the past century been the creators, the innovators, the entrepreneurs, the performers and the journalists who have brought the electronic arts to the prominence they occupy in the United States and the world today."  The Giants Honors were established in 2003 by the Library of American Broadcasting on the campus of the University of Maryland.

Sotelo, Garner, Dahl, Meier Among NRHOF Class Of 2013

The National Radio Hall of Fame announces its 2013 inductees:  KSCA/Los Angeles-based personality Eddie "Piolin" Sotelo (pictured), Chicago radio legends Steve Dahl and Garry Meier, After MidNite host Blair Garner, John Lanigan of WJMI/Cleveland's Lanigan & Malone, WJR/Detroit talk host Paul W. Smith, and Dodgers broadcaster Charlie Steiner. There will be a posthumous induction for Powel Crosley Jr. of Crosley Radio Corp.

Eddie "Piolin" Sotelo, heard in mornings on Spanish-language KSCA/Los Angeles and syndicated nationally by Univision Radio, has one of the most popular shows on L.A. radio. Steve Dahl and Garry Meier teamed up in 1979 on WLUP/Chicago, where Dahl was doing mornings and Meier overnights. They were heard on crosstown WLS-AM & FM for a few years, and later returned to WLUP.

Blair Garner has hosted the Premiere-syndicated AfterMidnite from Nashville for more than 20 years, and recently added the morning show at Cumulus' WNSH (NASH FM) in New York. AfterMidnite airs six hours nightly and is heard on about 230 affiliates. John Lanigan is the longtime co-host of the Lanigan & Malone Show on WJMI/Cleveland, while Paul W. Smith has been heard on WJR since 1996. He's also been heard filling in for Rush Limbaugh and Sean Hannity and has hosted shows on ABC Radio Network and the Financial News Network.  Charlie Steiner, now doing play-by-play for the L.A. Dodgers, before that spent three years with the Yankees. He earlier spent 14 years at ESPN, anchoring SportsCenter and doing Major League Baseball play-by-play on ESPN Radio and TV.

Powel Crosley Jr., who with his father founded Crosley Radio Corp., will be inducted posthumously. Crosley Radio launched WLW/Cincinnati in 1922.

KYW/Philly, WKRQ/Cincinnati Among Crystal Radio Winners

The NAB named the 10 winners of its annual Crystal Radio Awards for community service during the Radio Luncheon at the NAB Show, taking place this week in Las Vegas. The luncheon was keynoted by Donny Osmond Show host Donny Osmond, and also featured the induction of baseball announcer Bob Uecker into the Broadcasting Hall of Fame.

Buck Owens Production Co.'s Country KUZZ-FM/Bakersfield became only the third station to be honored with the Crystal Heritage Award, presented to stations that have won five Crystal Radio Awards for their ongoing commitment to community service.

The stations provided descriptions of their community-service efforts to the NAB; WKRQ noted that it has raised $4.4 million for charities, and its Jeff & Jenn's morning show outreach included events for the Heart Association and a breast cancer fundraiser. Clustermate WREW cited its involvement in raising money for victims of the Missouri and Alabama tornadoes last year, and its Tour de Cure, raising $132,000 to fight diabetes.

KYW, meanwhile, noted that it celebrated 90 years on the air in 2011, and its programming includes  community series like the Regional Affairs Council, Community Affairs Reporting, and Positively Philadelphia. KYW also offers a Newstudies Student Reporter program for local high school students.

KNOM-AM, meanwhile, pointed to its successful charity appeals in one of the nation's poorest communities, and said in its description of its 2011 activities, "KNOM staff donated over 8,000 hours to community outreach including radio community service, EMT/ambulance duties, food bank and e-waste collections and volunteering at a variety of community events. Overcoming violent weather and extreme conditions, KNOM is devoted to serving the people of Western Alaska."
