Wall Street Rewards Pandora for Q2 Earnings

8-30-2012

Pandora jumped 14% on Thursday after the company reported huge Q2 revenue gains, especially in the mobile space. Some of the stock gain came from shorts (investors betting the stock would decline) who got squeezed when earnings came in better than expected. Pandora lost over $5 Million in the second quarter but apparently that number was better than expected and investors felt reassured after hearing from CEO Joe Kennedy.

The company expects revenue to be about $115 million in the third quarter, hoping to break even in that quarter. Several analysts upgraded Pandora which may have also helped push the stock higher. On the Pandora conference call Wednesday one analyst even questioned if Pandora was spending enough to keep up with its growth. He indicated he might like to see more money spent on salespeople, which the company is deploying in major markets, to help speed up the growth.

The Clear Channel Board Rewards Bob Pittman

The details of the Clear Channel/Bob Pittman deal were filed in an 8K with the SEC yesterday and they show that the company is rewarding Mr. Pittman handsomely for what he has done so far and what they hope he will accomplish for Clear Channel in the future. The new CEO will receive a base salary of $1 million which can be increased at the discretion of Clear Channel's compensation committee.  Pittman will also have the opportunity to earn an annual bonus for hitting "reasonable" goals established by the committee after consultation with Pittman. The agreement says "The aggregate target performance bonus that may be earned when all of Pittman?s performance objectives are achieved will be not less than $1,650,000".  Pittman has become a positive pitchman for the entire industry giving pro-radio slide filled presentations detailing and highlighting how successful both Clear Channel and radio are with both consumers and advertisers.

Here are more details for the new CEO of Radio's biggest company. "During the term of his employment, clear channel will make an aircraft (which, to the extent available, will be a Dassault-Breguet Mystere Falcon 900) available to Mr. Pittman for his business and personal use and will pay all costs associated with the provision of the aircraft.  If a company aircraft is not available due to service or maintenance issues, Clear Channel will charter a private aircraft for Pittman's business and personal use. Clear Channel will also make a car and driver available for Pittman's business and personal use in and around the New York area as well as anywhere else on company business."

Beasley Rewards Employees For 2011

by Ed Ryan

It's like I tell my daughter every day, just remember Jilly if you're not first, you're last. So kick some butt out there. She always shakes her head as she heads out the door into the real world. It's my Knute Rockne speech for the day. She's 14 by the way. And while I'm not too sure that's exactly what George Beasley tells his people, it's great to see the family stir up the competitive juices and hand out achievement awards to employees. It's a dog-eat-dog world out there and there's too much rewarding going on for just trying. So, enough of that "let's give a ribbon to everyone in the game" stuff and hand out some winning trophies.

And the winners are:
? 103#9 WXKB-FM ? Radio Station of the Year / Fort Myers-Naples, FL
? Bruce Simel ? General Manager of the Year / Greenville-New Bern-Jacksonville, NC
? Justin Chase? Program Director of the Year / KKLZ-FM, Las Vegas
? Matt Smith? Sales Manager of the Year / WXTU-FM, Philadelphia
? AJ Lurie- Interactive Sales Manager of the Year / Fort Myers-Naples, FL
? Lisa Lewis? Business Manager of the Year / Greenville-New Bern-Jacksonville, NC
? Don Melnyk? Engineer of the Year / Philadelphia

Beasley Founder, Chairman and CEO George Beasley said ?Acknowledging the outstanding performances of our employees is one of the most gratifying aspects of managing the Company. This year?s awards dinner was especially poignant in that we also celebrated our 50th Anniversary in the radio broadcasting business. Such a milestone is only reached through teamwork; the Beasley family is thankful to be surrounded by incredible professionals operating at every level of the Company. The station and individuals who earned distinction as 2011 winners of our annual awards are to be commended for going the extra mile this past year, their dedication and efforts are greatly appreciated.?

Much better than my Knute Rockne speech big George. And Congratulations to all the Beasley WINNERS!

Is your company handing out achievement awards? Let us know about it. Send all details to edryan@radioink.com. You'd be surprised how motivating a little recognition by a well-known writer in a highly respected publication can be.
