Chuck D Slams Hot 97 Summer Jam

6-9-14

Billboard reports The Public Enemy co-founder has been in a Twitter fight with Hot 97 since the June 1 Summer Jam. He says his unhappiness about Summer Jam was over the prolific use of the N-word and a musical line-up he said did not adequately represent the New York hip-hop community. He says it's time things changed. "If there was a festival and it was filled with anti-Semitic slurs... or racial slurs at anyone but black people, what do you think would happen? Why does there have to be such a double standard?" (picture courtesy Billboard)

O'Reilly Slams Radio. Endorses Pandora.

1-16-14

Bill O'Reilly Factor Tip of The Day Thursday was to turn off your radio and turn on Pandora. O'Reilly finished his show last night by asking the question, "Do you like music?" The answer to his own question was, "The easiest was is you turn on the radio." But O'Reilly then said "for every good song there are three bad songs." That's why you want to check out Pandora.com. It's free and you type in a song you like. Then you get other songs similar to it." If you believe O'Reilly's take on radio, then the Wall Street Journal story (see above) is wrong and radio is not repetitive enough. Watch the O'Reilly Tip of the Day HERE

SCBA President Thom Callahan Slams Borrell Study

1-11-14

Southern California Broadcasters Association President Thom Callahan took issue with the recent Borrell Report (SEE OUR STORY HERE) in a post on Don Barrett's L.A. Radio website. Barrett's column pointed out that L.A. radio revenue was once $1 billion and in 2013 it's projected to be only $640 million. Borrell predicted that radio would be treading water over the next five years. Callahan told Barrett, ?It is easy to project the future when you don?t divulge how you arrive at your projections. I can only tell you what I hear from our member stations and that is optimism, based on ratings growth, improving revenue, and an exceptional new generation of salespeople that is giving the market new energy and results.?

Callahan also told Barrett radio is not in a 13-year decline as the Borrell Report indicates. ?The Borrell ?study? states that radio?s revenue decline began as early as 2006 and suggests it can?t all be blamed on the recession. Well, the fact is that 2007 was the radio industry?s greatest revenue year ever! All the trades should make a pledge that if they print negatives about radio, they should also report the positives as well. I think that is called being ?fair?.?

To be fair, most trades, including this one, always print positive stories about the radio industry and are often accused of carrying the water for the industry. One fact is clear, in the past few years radio has been, at best, flat, when other industries have seen tremendous revenue growth.

I thought that Bob Struble's shyster technology was supposed to save the radio industry.

Sheppard Quits, Slams Entercom

4-15-13
Weekend and fill-in host Pete Sheppard used the WEEI airwaves to quit his job Saturday burning any bridge he may have had with Entercom. Sheppard said he could no longer stand working for the company. Boston.com reports Sheppard used he Facebook page to tease his plan then announced on the air he was quitting on the spot, stating he was frustrated with the way Entercom was running the station over the past several months. He said he was going out on his own terms this time. Sheppard was fired by Entercom once before.

Sheppard was often heard on "The Big Show'' hosted by Glenn Ordway in the early 2000s. He was fired back in 2000 and rehired in March 2012, according to the Globe. Read more here at The Boston Herald. The paper writes, "He Quit With Flair While on the Air."

Ah yes. Another weekend jock that thinks he can run the company better than those who do. If I weren't so pitiful, it would be funny.
