RAB Reports Q3 Revenue Dropped Slightly

11-16-2012

The Radio Advertising Bureau confirms what we've seen from most of the big reporting companies, that radio had a weak third quarter. The RAB issued its quarterly revenue report today and says total spot revenue based on 100 Miller Kaplan Markets, was $3.64 Billion. That's down from Q2 which came in at $3.76 Billion. Q1 was $3.047 Billion. That brings the radio revenue total for the first three quarters to just under $10.5 billion so far for 2012.

While Q3 spending was flat compared to the same time period last year, several categories increased their Spot Radio spending over Q3 2011 levels according to the RAB:
Health Care +26%
Auto Dealers/Dealer Groups/Manufacturers + 7%
Department/Discount Stores/Shopping Centers + 7%
Television/Networks/Cable Providers + 3%
Beverages + 3%
Grocery/Convenience/Liquor Stores + 1%
Casinos/Lottery + 1%

Pandora Listener Hours Down Slightly

10-4-12

Pandora released its listener hours for the month of September and says that number was 1.15 billion. The August numbers were 1.16 billion. Active listeners for September were 58.3 million compared to 56.2 million in August. The company also says it now has 6.53% of all radio listening in the U.S. That's an increase over August which was 6.30%. It's difficult to prove the total accuracy of that number. It's derived from listening hours publicly stated by Arbitron for radio and public statements made by Sirius XM. According to Pandora Executives, those two totals are added to the total listening hours from Pandora to make up the total universe of listening hours. From that Pandora says it now has 6.3%.

Alfred Liggins reported in his numbers and they were down a touch compared to a year ago. Radio One (radio revenue) was $58.7 million compared to $57.9 million in the third quarter of 2010. Liggins also told investors he expected Q4 to be worse for Radio One, stating it is pacing down 10%. National is pacing down 17%. Radio President Barry Mayo attributed the negative pacings on some of the 2012 comps.

The obvious non-returning comp is political advertising. However, Radio One also received a $1.3 million buy from Comcast related to the merger and aimed at minority owned businesses. Kodak also placed a $903,000 buy targeting ethnic markets. When those 2012 comps are backed out, Radio One is pacing down 4% and all of that is national advertising.

Liggins also said recent changes the company has made were geared toward better performance in the 2nd quarter of 2012. Radio One announced a format flip in Houston to all news, the first all news station in that city. And, it swapped Urban frequencies in Philly. Typically format flips are not big revenue generators until, and if, ratings can be developed. Liggins says the news station in Houston give Radio One more inventory to monetize his assets in that market. He says the company is making "strategic d
