Valle: Streaming Is Worth It To Univision

9-11-2014

Univision Radio President Jose Valle got into a little disagreement over revenue generated from streaming their radio stations. Emmis chief Jeff Smulyan said he's been streaming stations for 18 years and hasn't made a penny, nor has he met a broadcaster who's made any money from streaming. Apparently he was sitting right next to one who has, at the Thursday-morning Leadership Breakfast at the Radio Show.

Valle said some of his stations see an additional 60 percent listenership from digital audio. "It's a $20 million revenue line for us," he said. "And it cash flows for us." Valle said, "We don't abandon our over-the-air audience but we have to be where our listeners want us to be. Listeners dictate."

Valle Creates National Radio Talent System

7-2-13

The veteran consultant says, "For decades, the radio industry has talked of the long-standing need for a farm system that would identify and bring new talent into the industry. Now, the National Radio Talent System is designed to be the ?go to? place to find new, young, passionate, well-educated, entry level talent qualified to excel in radio stations across America." The National Radio Talent System will be a ten-day program held on college campuses, with the goal being that one is held in every region or state in America so students can attend in their home state, and so radio stations can recruit from their own region of the country, or nationally.

Valle says, "Due to the advent of voice-tracking, automation, syndication, and labor laws that minimize or prevent the opportunity for young people to just ?hang around? the radio station, the radio industry has lost much of its training ground." The working model for the National Radio Talent System is the Kellar Radio Talent Institute at Appalachian State University in Boone, NC, also created by Vallie.

Vallie says, "It?s the broadcasters who have vision, passion and love for the business that recognize this long-standing need and the importance of finding young, entry level talent, and the National Radio Talent System is the solution to that need. Most know that, while it?s imperative that we continue to have advances in technology and insure that radio is ubiquitous, success in our industry and the future will always depend on people. We have to attract the best and the brightest who have the talent and desire to get into radio to insure we not only hire great young talent today, but also to insure we have great leadership well into this 21st century?and that is not only possible, it has already begun. This is a noble effort.?

Jose Valle Named Executive of The Year

12-6-2012

Radio Ink magazine has chosen Univision Radio President Jose Valle as its Executive of the Year. Valle, who started out as a receptionist at KTNQ and KLVE in Los Angeles, is now responsible for 70 radio stations in 16 of the top U.S. Hispanic markets and five stations in Puerto Rico, leading 1,100 Univision employees. And among the stations Valle now runs are KTNQ and KLVE, where he once answered the phones. Valle will be featured as the cover interview in the January 7 issue of Radio Ink.

About being named Executive of the Year, Valle said, "This is radio. This is fun stuff. Being able to enjoy what we do, having a connection to our folks that put up banners ? because I've been there, working with the traffic department. I've been there, and I understand the dilemma of salespeople bringing in orders past the deadline. All those kinds of things, I think, play into it, but at the end of the day, I think it's about transparency and being authentic. I want to say thank you to Radio Ink. You have been really welcoming and warm to me. I am just a simple radio guy. I like to run my stations and run my group. You guys have more than opened the door, more than welcomed me."

Radio Ink Publisher Eric Rhoads said, "Univision Radio is going through a transformation, and we have seen a 180-degree turn in how they operate, where their focus lies, and their deep commitment to this industry. Jose has been driving this innovation, and we're watching this big ship make a dramatic change in course as a result of his leadership, which makes us proud to name him our Radio Executive of the Year."

Before joining Univision, Valle served as president and general manager of Telemundo?s flagship station, KVEA, as well as overseeing operations for Spanish-language independent KWHY station in Los Angeles from 2008 to 2010. Before that he was VP/GM of KXTX-TV/Dallas, where he played a key role in the consolidation and integration of operations with NBC O&O KXAS.

Univision Communications President & CEO Randy Falco said,  "Jose Valle epitomizes Univision's values of integrity, excellence, collaboration and innovation, which is why we are not surprised that he was selected as Radio Ink's Executive of the Year. Jose has played an integral role in the continued growth and success of Univision Radio. We join Radio Ink, a leader in the radio industry, in celebrating Jose."

Radio Ink EVP/Radio Deborah Parenti said, "Jose Valle has brought a fresh, exciting  sense of energy and vision, not only to Hispanic radio, but to the radio industry as a whole. We are proud to recognize him as Executive of the Year and look forward to hearing more from him and his team at Univision Radio in the years to come."

Jose Valle Makes Biggest Jump on Top 40 List

7-17-2012

In only his second year on Radio Ink's 40 Most Powerful People in Radio list, Univision Radio President Jose Valle enters the top ten at number 7, jumping 12 spots from number 19. The veteran radio executive and former Univision Los Angeles manager has brought an engaging leadership style since taking charge of the radio division. Univision owns 69 radio stations in 20 top Hispanic markets including Puerto Rico. Here's what Valle had to say in our Power issue about moving the radio needle forward.

"The best thing we can do to move forward is to protect our core business by overdelivering on expectations to both listeners and advertisers. AM/FM, as our listeners will always refer to us, needs to continue to be their first choice for music and entertainment. As such, Univision Radio has made significant investments in music research on listener behavior, driving changes to our on-air product on multiple levels."

Valle says, about his philosophy, "we hire and empower good people who live our company values and understand our listeners, are "ninja good" at what they do, and super-competetive. And if that isn't enough we remind them that we play music and throw parties for a living. If that doesn't motivate you, I don't know what will."
