Award-winning executive producer of NPR?s Tell Me More, Teshima Walker, died Friday at the age of 44 after a two-year battle with colon cancer. Walker first joined All Things Considered as a journalism fellow in 2000. Later, she spent three years as a producer for The Tavis Smiley Show, and then for News and Notes. In 2007, Walker signed on as senior supervising producer of Tell Me More. Walker first came to NPR by way of WBEZ, where she was a senior producer for morning news magazine Eight Forty-Eight.

?Teshima was a terrific journalist who worked tirelessly to bring new and diverse voices to air,? says Ellen McDonnell, executive editor for NPR News Programming. ?She was a phenomenal advocate for the show, the staff and the audience. Tell Me More ? and everyone who was lucky enough to work with Teshima ? thrived under her leadership.?

?Teshima made us all want to dig a little deeper, think harder, and be better,? shares Tell Me More host Michel Martin. ?She was everything you could want in a manager and friend: kind and open-hearted when you needed her to be, and tough, but fair, when you needed her to be. While I already miss her amazing laugh and her incredible off-key rendition of the 'Happy Birthday' song, I know I am better for having heard them both. We are all very grateful for the time we had with her, and thank her husband, parents, and sister for sharing these precious last days with us.?

Walker is survived by her husband, writer Jimi Izrael, her parents William and Vonceal Walker, and her sister Eureva Walker.

Executive Bonuses Yes. Rank-And-File Raises, No.

12-26-2012

It was only six months ago that Radio One CEO Alfred Liggins wrote an e-mail to his troops that, despite the good start to the year, belt-tightening was still needed. He said the company needed to "aggressively" manage expenses to adhere to an agreement it had with a bank so there would be no employee raises. Employees did receive an additional three days of paid time off. In an 8K document filed with the SEC yesterday, Radio One announced it would be handing out half a million dollars in bonus money to two executives.

Here's a portion of the Liggins e-mail from June of this year. "I would like to start by sincerely thanking all of you for your hard work and continued commitment to the company. As you are aware, we had a successful Q1 and the outlook on Q2 is positive as well. It goes without saying that our success is dependent upon our employees, so congratulations and thank you. While I am very pleased with our current performance, it is my position and that of our Board of Directors that we must continue to aggressively manage our expenses and grow our revenue in order to adhere to the terms of our bank agreement."

(12/28/2012 6:55:29 AM)
Doyle, you may be right. We might not know all the facts. If the two receiving bonuses had worked for little or nothing all year, then yes they would be entitled to something at the end of the year. But if not, then they should either turn down the bonuses or find a way to share them with all the company's employees; one is the CFO, after all, and he should be able to figure out something. Their good fortune was achieved through the sacrifices of others. They should recognize that.
(12/27/2012 5:45:55 PM)
A sure bet will be that ACL3 and his mother will get so much that the half million will seem very small... Unbelievably predictable...
(12/27/2012 1:30:50 PM)
No doubt that Alfred could have handled this situation in a more open and straight-forward manner, with an explanation to his employees. Secondly, the bonuses to his two top people have put them in a difficult situation. However, before we all crucify Alfred, there must be a logical explanation. Was the bonus part of these two top level employees compensation package? Was he merely living up to an incentive obligation. I know Alfred as a fair CEO. Cut him some slack until we know the facts.
(12/27/2012 11:44:19 AM)
Sadly, the shareholders come before staffers at most companies. CBS is an exception.

Surrounded by challenges, radio really needs to shine now. Meanwhile, industry leaders are busy swallowing their own tail.

(12/27/2012 11:16:01 AM)
I can understand as an owner why raises were not given. With the uncertainties with our economy and the world conditions, owners and managers who answer to stock holders have to be really careful to not give something they can't afford long term (Does General Motors ring a bell?) However that doesn't mean when the bonuses come out they should go all the way through the ranks to all deserving associates.
Your people will understand and will appreciate your commitment to their welfare and respond in-kind! It works.

Jose Valle Named Executive of The Year

12-6-2012

Radio Ink magazine has chosen Univision Radio President Jose Valle as its Executive of the Year. Valle, who started out as a receptionist at KTNQ and KLVE in Los Angeles, is now responsible for 70 radio stations in 16 of the top U.S. Hispanic markets and five stations in Puerto Rico, leading 1,100 Univision employees. And among the stations Valle now runs are KTNQ and KLVE, where he once answered the phones. Valle will be featured as the cover interview in the January 7 issue of Radio Ink.

About being named Executive of the Year, Valle said, "This is radio. This is fun stuff. Being able to enjoy what we do, having a connection to our folks that put up banners ? because I've been there, working with the traffic department. I've been there, and I understand the dilemma of salespeople bringing in orders past the deadline. All those kinds of things, I think, play into it, but at the end of the day, I think it's about transparency and being authentic. I want to say thank you to Radio Ink. You have been really welcoming and warm to me. I am just a simple radio guy. I like to run my stations and run my group. You guys have more than opened the door, more than welcomed me."

Radio Ink Publisher Eric Rhoads said, "Univision Radio is going through a transformation, and we have seen a 180-degree turn in how they operate, where their focus lies, and their deep commitment to this industry. Jose has been driving this innovation, and we're watching this big ship make a dramatic change in course as a result of his leadership, which makes us proud to name him our Radio Executive of the Year."

Before joining Univision, Valle served as president and general manager of Telemundo?s flagship station, KVEA, as well as overseeing operations for Spanish-language independent KWHY station in Los Angeles from 2008 to 2010. Before that he was VP/GM of KXTX-TV/Dallas, where he played a key role in the consolidation and integration of operations with NBC O&O KXAS.

Univision Communications President & CEO Randy Falco said,  "Jose Valle epitomizes Univision's values of integrity, excellence, collaboration and innovation, which is why we are not surprised that he was selected as Radio Ink's Executive of the Year. Jose has played an integral role in the continued growth and success of Univision Radio. We join Radio Ink, a leader in the radio industry, in celebrating Jose."

Radio Ink EVP/Radio Deborah Parenti said, "Jose Valle has brought a fresh, exciting  sense of energy and vision, not only to Hispanic radio, but to the radio industry as a whole. We are proud to recognize him as Executive of the Year and look forward to hearing more from him and his team at Univision Radio in the years to come."

Florida Drops Charges Against SBS Executive

8-14-2012

Salas said, "I am happy that this is finally over. This is an unfortunate situation my family and I have endured, and we're ready to put this behind us and move forward. I have never had any problems with the law, not even a parking ticket," said Salas. SBS CEO Raul Alarcon said, "Congratulations to Jesus on a wonderful outcome! I always knew he would be totally vindicated."

Salas is the EVP of Programming for Spanish Broadcasting System. He began his career as an air personality and got his first programming job at age 19. VIDEO)MRC Executive Director Talks Arbitron

3-22-2012

He doesn't make many public appearances or give many interviews. One of the reasons may be because everyone wants to ask him questions about Arbitron and that's an especially touchy subject. Media Ratings Council CEO/Executive Director George Ivie appeared on a panel at the Radio Ink Hispanic Radio conference last week and we did ask him about Arbitron. We asked him why the MRC dropped Arbitron from five markets? Does take Arbitron take the MRC seriously? When might those five markets be added back, as well as any others? Is the Hispanic population being measured fairly? Here's our video interview with George Ivie.

(LEADERSHIP) Executive Toughness: How to Get It!

2-14-2012

This week?s blog is a book review:  Executive Toughness: The Mental Training Program to Increase your Leadership Performance by Dr. Jason Selk published by McGraw Hill. Why am I blogging about this book? My objective in addressing sales leadership issues is to provide you ideas, tools and concepts to increase your professionalism.

I like to read a business book focused on some aspect of my profession, then I will switch to another form of book for personal fun. I believe your sales teams and you should have a personal development plan. You need to add this book to your library!

After writing four books myself, I found ?Executive Toughness? a terrific read that a new manager or any experienced business leader can find something new or an aspect of their life to improve upon. As each page flew by, I found myself underlining sentences, circling ideas and folding over pages as concepts and tools were introduced.  Dr. Selk opens each new idea with a story of a person that defines his message, I liked the way he personalized the concepts that the reader could relate to.

His conversations and stories with the famed Coach John Madden were terrific.  Before I cover the topics, the one aspect of the book I really thought was a great concept was at the conclusion of each section where Dr. Self was making a point, he included tools where the reader could begin to build their own personal ?training? program.  This allowed the reader not only to read and understand the topic, but to put the information into their Personalized Action Plan!

The topics of the book that I really enjoyed were:
? Accountability: The Process of Achievement (readers of this blog know my feelings on ?accountability, discipline and control?.
? Self-Evaluation: Look into the mirror everyday
? Improving Execution and Consistency: in our sales leadership workshops I discuss that execution is the key element that in high performance sales organizations...
? The Mental Work: ?100 seconds a day keeps failure away.?  This section pays for the book!
? Optimism: Overcoming All Obstacles:   Becoming relentless and unremitting action.

And to make the book even better, the last 12 pages gives you the Handbook to move forward with your personalize program.  Dr. Selk hits the point, you must be personally in balance and know what you want and you must take action to achieve high performance.

Buy it, read it and take action, you will be a better person because of it.

Christian Named Executive Of The Year

12-13-2011

Employees love to work for him. Listeners love his radio stations. Shareholders love to invest in him. Radio Ink has named Saga Communications CEO Ed Christian Radio Executive of the year for 2011. There was a time the major players in radio were the darlings of Wall Street. Times have certainly changed as many of those monster radio companies have seen their stocks crater into the single digits, some having to file for bankruptcy to survive, leaving investors looking elsewhere to put their money. Then, there is Saga Communications. The Saga stock price will open today at $36.72. Year-to-date, Saga is up over 40%. The Company operates 61 FM's, 30 AM's 3 state radio networks and 2 farm networks in 26 small and medium markets. Christian says the key to his success, "everything that you do and say has to be centered around the community."

Here's a little preview of our interview with our 2011 Radio Executive of the Year, Ed Christian. "I have had a chance to listen to a lot of radio and watch TV as of late and it amazes me on television how much they mention local communities, local events on their newscasts, even in their breaks to try to involve the people and make them feel, "this is really my TV station." Once you have the feeling that "the station belongs to me" it becomes immaterial. Perception becomes reality. After a while, you are so good for so long. Let me give you an example. Look back at the old days, the days of The Real Don Steele. He had long outlived his usefulness and really wasn't a great morning talent. But the fact is, everybody listened to him just out of habit because he had always been there. You establish this thing in the community where you are what they expect. You are their go-to place. You are their destination. The whole radio station and everybody else there has to have the central philosophy of what we do here is important. We are the ones who control the community."

Christian with  will be featured on the cover of Radio Ink's January 9th issue.

Ford Executive Tells Broadcasters: "Get in SYNC"

It's no secret that the battle for the automobile dashboard is well underway as consumers start to expect computer-like experiences between the seats. They want maps, they  want reliable real-time traffic, they want an easy way to hook up their smart phones and, of course, they want entertainment. By now most consumers have heard of the SYNC, Ford's introduction into the mobile infotainment arena. Ford's SYNC is just one product auto makers are rolling out to integrate all the digital systems and entertainment customers have come to expect. Is Radio being nudged out of the dash because it refuses to get with the times?

Jim Buczkowski (pictured) is the Director of Global Electrical and Electronics Systems Engineering at the Ford Motor Company. He recently wrote a letter to broadcasters urging them to get with the program. His message to broadcasters; move more quickly on digital. "AM/FM  now competes with crystal clear music and talk radio sources in the car like  Pandora, Spotify, Music Unlimited, Slacker, Stitcher, iHeartRadio and other audio streams.  But it?s not just the experience created by great sound and reception.  Consumers have come to expect the same consistent ?look and feel? from their in-car media experience as they experience with their iPods, smartphones, Internet radio and other digital technology.  HD Radio technology can provide this look and feel as well but analog radio cannot."

Buczkowski  says consumers want more than broadcasters are now offering. "I think there is a a lot of competition out there. Customers have a lot more choices than they have ever had in the past. I think the AM/FM broadcasters still have some content that is really important to our customers, but they wonder why they can't get digital quality sound like with Sirius, podcasts, or MP3 players? Why do I have to listen to a scratchy sound? Why can't I see the meta data that I can see other places? I think it's going to be a really competitive environment for the AM/FM broadcasters. We would like to see them continue to create great experiences that would match what customers can see from other sources."

We asked Buczkowski if there was ever a possibility that AM/FM would be left behind, or even left out of the dash, in the future. The real challenge is, although AM/FM has the opportunity with the local talent, is the upgraded sound quality, plus some of the added content like the current song and artist name that can appear on the radio display had not been part of AM/FM local broadcast in the past. With HD radio, that does become available for customers to see on the head units. If a song from Beyonce is playing, I don't have to wait until the personality comes back on at the end of the broadcast, they may move on to the next song and you may not know who just played the last song. Satellite radio offers that. Certainly the mp3 players, if you bring mp3 music into the vehicle you would have that. With HD radio, you would have that as well. AM and FM have the chance to catch up a bit, by moving to digital broadcast through HD radio. There are also some opportunities going forward that the HD technology provides. I know there are markets, not necessarily here in Detroit, but in New York, and so on there are only so many slots on the bandwidth and they are all filled up. There are certain types of genres and content that can't be provided with a traditional AM/FM broadcast, because there just aren't any channels left. With digital broadcasting, HD radio, they can add some additional channels that allow for even more variety for customers."

SYNC allows consumers to control their smartphones, entertainment choices and information services via voice commands or through a simple, intuitive set of button or touch screen commands.  SYNC can connect to many  popular digital music sources via Bluetooth or USB connections. Users can browse through their music collections by genre, album, artist, and song title  using simple voice commands. Today, there are over 2,000 AM & FM stations broadcasting with HD Radio Technology with more than 1,300 additional digital only FM HD2/HD3/HD4 multicast channels.
