(DASH) A Plea On Behalf Of Great Talent

10-9-2013

Ed Ryan really nailed it better than I ever could in yesterday's piece featuring Pierre Robert from WMMR.

As we gear up for the Dash Conference in Detroit in a few weeks, it's important to break down the competitive terrain of the dashboard and focus on what is The Priority.

The excellence of local talent is the absolute best way for us to compete with any form of competition. And great talent of national importance can also stack up against any form of competition.

Yes we need to be completely abreast of the warp-speed pace of change with technology of all types, particularly in the car; and that includes app usage, USB ports, voice recognition, and everything in between.

But all across cities and states of all sizes we must celebrate what great talent means to our brands. Great Talent -- and great local talent -- is the driving force that brings results for local and national advertisers.

Local talent is the difference when it comes to rallying an audience to help out a community in need.

Isn't that the core tenant of our responsibility as license holders?

When we think of music discovery, the curation that local talent can facilitate is the difference maker. When a station has local talent that captures the essence of a moment of local or national significance, they serve the audience in a way that can't be duplicated.

As we all think of the possibilities and importance of our social role, it should be ALL about our great talent.

The tireless crew that comes in at any time and hour needed. Yes, this is the crew that can exhaust us at times. But it's also the best in show.

When we think of all the challenges and competition we face, let's celebrate the saving graces of our on-air talent.

In our organization, we are very fortunate to have a chairman/CEO like Peter Smyth at Greater Media who believes in developing and supporting talent.

I look forward to the panel I'm moderating with great Detroit air talent at Dash.

Hope to see you there.
