In his latest company column, Greater Media CEO Peter Smyth says radio is becoming part of a larger audio universe and Nielsen's name change of Arbitron to Nielsen Audio is proof. And with that, Smyth expects radio to have to compete more with online pure plays and even podcasters when and if the ratings system is transformed to include online listening. "Today, we know little of the specific integration plan, but you can be assured that some day in the not too distant future, ratings will contain online radio stations such as Pandora, Spotify, and iTunes Radio as well as podcasts like Adam Carolla, Ricky Gervais, and 'Wait, Wait Don?t Tell Me' from NPR."
Smyth goes on to say radio can no longer believe that its rivals are the stations down the street. "Now we will see the true scale of competitors for our audiences? attention. That may scare some radio people, but it does not scare me; the truth is that we have been competing with Internet audio for some time now, regardless of what Arbitron rules have said about the listening universe."
