Barry Young Retiring From KFYI Phoenix

After nearly three decades with Newstalk 550 KFYI Phoenix, morning man Barry Young (pictured left) will retire in November. Young started on KFYI on April 27, 1987 as an on-air talent and PD. He said, ?Being a part of KFYI's growth and development from a new renegade start-up Talk radio station into one of America's great and mature heritage radio stations has been both a wonderful challenge and delight. It has been an incredible privilege to be an integral part of all this and to be a part of the day-to-day lives of so many thousands of our listeners, our neighbors, all across Arizona. Although I am retiring from a day-to-day Talk radio program, my heart will always be in broadcasting and at KFYI. I know that I will miss being on the air more than I can express, but I know I leave KFYI and all of our listeners in good hands.?

Listeners, friends, co-workers, and clients will have the chance to say goodbye to Young at the Barry Young Celebrity Roast in late October. Barry?s final day as a full-time show host will be November 7. Afternoon driver Mike Broomhead will take over mornings. Broomhead has spent five years hosting on KFYI and has added national duties on Glenn Beck?s Blaze Network.

Broomhead said, ?Barry Young is a legend in this business and will someday soon be in the Arizona Broadcasting Hall of Fame. It has been an honor to work with and learn from him. I'm looking forward to hosting mornings. I want to talk about the issues that concern all of us and find solutions that are best for Arizona. I?m not always right, but I always want what is best.? PD Neil Larrimore added, ?Mike is a superstar who has worked hard to earn this opportunity. He's a great host, but even more so, he's a good man. We?re so excited to move him into mornings at Newstalk 550 KFYI."

Barry Thomas Parts Ways With Lincoln

Thomas joined Lincoln Financial Media in 2006 not long after they merged with Jefferson Pilot. He was the Vice President of Engineering based out of the Atlanta office. Thomas is still the Chairman, NAB Radio Technology Committee and can be reached at barryt@sbe.org

Barry Drake Continues to Unload Stations

After announcing he's selling Elmira/Corning and Olean in upstate New York to Bruce Mittman's Community Broadcasters, Drake's Backyard Broadcasting now says it has an agreement to sell its Muncie Indiana cluster. The Buyer is a new group formed by J. Chapman called Woof Boom Radio who said, "I believe that radio is an effective and unmatched way for those with a message to reach listeners. Radio works when it's authentic and local. You can hear passion and you can't fake it." No dollar amount was announced for the deal that Kalil and Company brokered. This leaves Drake with one cluster of stations in Williamsport, PA.

Saga Hires Barry Brown To Run Asheville

Brown is currently the NextMedia Market Manager in Myrtle Beach and will join Saga in a few weeks. Brown has spent more than 19 years in the Myrtle Beach area including 10 years with NextMedia and nine as an owner/operator in the market. He's served as past President of the South Carolina Broadcasters Association and is in the South Carolina Broadcasters Hall of Fame.

Barry Drake Deals 6 To Duke Wright

The market is Sioux Falls, South Dakota where Drake?s Backyard Broadcasting will sell a cluster to Wright?s Midwest Communications. The purchase price was not announced. Midwest, based out of  Wisconsin owns 47 stations in Wisconsin, Minnesota, Illinois and Indiana. The deal with Backyard includes 5 FM?s and 1 AM (KELO-FM, KSQB-FM, KXQL-FM, KRRO-FM, KTWB-FM and KWSN-AM).

Kalil and Company was the exclusive broker for the deal.

Talkers Honors Barry Farber

Talk Radio Network personality Barry Farber will be honored with the Talkers Magazine Lifetime Achievement Award, on June 7 at the New Media Seminar in New York. The Barry Farber Show host will receive the award from Talkers publisher Michael Harrison. 

Farber said, "I never tasted this kind of sweetness before, and I wish I could share it with the whole world, beginning with Michael Harrison and his team at Talkers Magazine and Mark Masters, my boss at Talk Radio Network."

Talk Radio Network CEO Mark Masters said, "Barry Farber is one of America?s legendary talk show hosts. He brings meaning to what otherwise would be information through the art of storytelling. Barry transports the listener to places no other medium can take them, painting memorable images with a gentle Southern accent -- he is one of a kind. Congratulations, Barry!?

Farber began his career as a talk host in 1960 on WINS/New York, and went on to shows on WOR-AM and WMCA-AM/New York, then joined ABC Radio Network and Talk Radio Network. He's also an author, whose books include Making People Talk: You Can Turn Every Conversation Into a Magic Moment and the upcoming Cocktails With Molotov: A Generation of Unlikely Detours.

The Barry Farber Show is heard Saturdays live from 4-5 p.m. ET.
