ESPN's "Show Killer" Gets New Gig

12-14-2012

After 13 years ?behind the glass,? ESPN's Phil ?The Show Killer? Ceppaglia is changing roles. Having helped shape the sounds of Dan Patrick, Tony Kornheiser, and most recently Mike Tirico and Scott Van Pelt, Ceppaglia shed his associate producer headphones to assume ESPN Audio?s newly created position of Commercial Production Coordinator. The vacancy was created when ESPN ended its ad sales and distribution agreement with Cumulus Media Networks.

Ceppaglia said, ?I already have a good understanding of integrating commercials into our play lists and I?m excited to start working with our New York Sales and Traffic teams. We?re all learning at the same time. Everyone has different terms ? Traffic will ask me to ?Export the XDS log,? and then I?ll have to ask our engineers, ?What are they saying?? But I?m starting to understand it.?
Similar to being in the center of this significant procedural change, Ceppaglia was in the middle of another historic ESPN Audio moment ?when it became a 24/7 network in September 1999. He had arrived in Bristol in October 1998 (?I put everything I had in the back of my Grand Am?) from Buffalo?s WBEN-AM and began working part time on the 1-4 p.m. Tony Kornheiser Show. He stayed in that time slot when The Dan Patrick Show debuted there and Kornheiser moved to the network?s last unprogrammed hours, 10 a.m.-1 p.m., to complete the 24-hour cycle.
That was also the time Phil became ?The Show Killer? to the network?s mid-day listeners. ?I was screening calls, and typed a caller?s name and home town onto the screen,? Ceppaglia explains. ?But Tony read the wrong town, and when the caller corrected him, Tony called me a show killer on air. Dan took that and ran with it.?

Smyth To Moderate Killer Forecast Panel

10-18-2012

At Forecast 2013, Greater Media CEO Peter Smyth will lead a conversation on "2013 Investment Strategy: Wall Street, Main Street -- and How About the Digital Highway?" with leading bankers and equity investors frankly discussing how the radio industry looks from their point of view. Has deleveraging made radio more attractive? What does the environment look like for private equity, debt financing, and even privatization over the next year? How much weight do investors really put on digital strategy at radio?

Smyth says, ?I look forward to moderating this exciting panel of well-respected financial experts as we hear their thoughts on what investors are looking for and where they see the radio business headed as a long-term investment.?

Even when radio thinks of itself as Main Street, Wall Street has an impact on every part of the industry, every day. Don't miss your chance to hear from the experts at Forecast 2013, set for November 28, 2012 -- the week after Thanksgiving -- at the Harvard Club in New York.

Balderas Leads Killer Revenue Panel in San Diego

1-9-2012
As March 21 quickly approaches, we want to be sure to give you the details on some of the panels that will highlight our Hispanic Radio Conference program. Angelica Balderas is the National Sales Manager for Adelante Media Group, and she'll moderate a panel focused on how stations can find and capture revenue in 2012. She says the panel will fous on several details that will help uncover that money.

- Spanish stations pricing off general-market cost per point -- and  how we move marketers, but more importantly their agencies, to plan inclusion of Spanish.
- What is the right revenue mix for a successful Spanish station (national, agency, local direct)? How much do you have to depend on Hispanic-owned businesses to make you profitable?
- How do you balance a sales staff when  you have general market sellers, bilingual sellers, and Spanish dominant sellers?
- How do you do it right and hit it out of the park?

During the show awards will be given out to the best Hispanic broadcasters in the country. Nominations are being accepted now. Here are the categories:

Perhaps Angelica can also explain Adelante Media's strategy of using live radio ads dressed up as contests for "winning" Disney vacations, not before the "winner" has to provide a credit card which will get charged hundreds of dollars after "winning" the radio "contest".

And how about all the live natural Viagra ads on Adelante stations? Talk about shamelessly misleading your audience.

I guess that's a killer revenue they are talking about.

Hispanic Origin. Persons of Hispanic origin were identified by a question that asked for self-identification of the person's origin or descent. Respondents were asked to select their origin (and the origin of other household members) from a "flash card" listing ethnic origins. Persons of Hispanic origin, in particular, were those who indicated that their origin was Mexican, Puerto Rican, Cuban, Central or South American, or some other Hispanic origin. It should be noted that persons of Hispanic

Also, to all those people that like to INCORRECTLY use the term "LATINO", could you please define it and then define the term "LATIN AMERICAN"as well, and tell me what the difference is?????
(1/19/2012 11:17:09 AM)
HISPANIC Radio???? Is there "ANGLOSAXON", "BLACK /AFRICAN/AFRICAN-AMERICAN", or "NATIVE AMERICAN" Radio as well??? I understand that the people at RADIO INK are not of Hispanic (WRONGLY phrased as Latino) descent, but if they are going to write about something, they should inform themselves FIRST, this way, they will avoid making these errors.....
The right term is "SPANISH" Radio, as it refers to the LANGUAGE format, which is obviously
SPANISH, and NOT to an ETHNICITY....

If you are attending make sure you put Angie's panel on your "must see" list. I have had the pleasure to meet and work with her over the past several years.
Bright, insightful, strategic and a dynamic seller.
