Radio Still Matters to Auto Dealers

10-17-15
On a panel that combined auto dealers with radio managers the theme was, "with great technology comes great responsibility." While connected cars have great tech capabilities, they also require a lot of knowledge to operate. An advantage for radio if it keeps its content strong is that, as the auto dealers on the panel explained, consumers simply do not want to wait around to learn how to properly use the technology, most car buyers absolutely want their phones paired.

Shuman Chrysler Dodge Jeep Ram President Bob Shuman (pictured) said, ?It takes 30 minutes to explain the full user experience for the connected car and most consumers don?t want to take that time.? The panel concluded that this relationship was vital and radio & advertisers get hurt if AM/FM is diminished during car buying process ? "local broadcasters bring people to dealerships."

Content Still Matters. Rush Still Matters.

7-10-14

That is the opinion of Richard Harker at Harker Research who writes in his new blog that one thing is clear, "Stations that have cut programming costs by cheapening their product will ultimately pay a significant price for their actions." Harker references the January 2014 Rush Limbaugh station switches in New York and Los Angeles. "In each case, Limbaugh left the leading News-Talk station and moved to a much weaker competitor. Now with six months of PPM data we can see what happened. In both instances the stations that added Limbaugh benefited, and the stations that lost Limbaugh took major ratings hits."

Harker created a detailed chart of the change showing the decline in share for the two stations that lost Rush. It is important to note that in L.A. both KFI (which had Rush) and KEIB (Rush's new home) are both owned by Clear Channel. Harker says, "While it still ranked well below KFI,  KEIB has seen its full week AQH nearly double, and Limbaugh?s time-slot numbers nearly triple. (All comparisons are based on three month averages to smooth out wobbles.)"

Our New York City Radio Discussion Board is also talking about this issue HERE

In New York, Harker says the change was even more dramatic. "WABC (Rush' old home) lost a quarter of its 6+ AQH in the first month without Limbaugh, and has continued to lose listeners virtually every month since. Today the station indexes at 35, indicating that two thirds of the station's quarter-hours have evaporated since the beginning of 2014. WOR (Rush' new home) closed out 2013 with about half the quarter-hour persons of WABC. Today the station indexes at 370, suggesting that the station share is nearly four times its pre-Limbaugh level.

Harker writes how important the content is in every format, not just talk. "Listeners have options, more than ever. They will not remain loyal to stations that stop delivering on expectations. Too many broadcast leaders have decided that cheaper trumps better, that downgrading the product to squeeze a little more profit out of local radio is good business. The next quarter?s bottom line might look a little better, but the lessons of what?s happened in New York and Los Angeles suggest that the gains are short lived. The negative long term implications will long remain after the momentary bump in profit is forgotten."

Rush Spokesman Says Media Matters Hurting Business With Ad Boycott Campaign

3-21-2012

In an editorial at Politico.com, Rush Limbaugh Show spokesman Brian Glicklich went after David Brock's Media Matters for America, the organization that's been leading the campaign to boycott advertisers on the Rush Limbaugh program. Glicklich writes, "Media Matters for America stands for censorship, and nothing more than that. Their ginned-up election year anger is directed at the words of their media political opposition." These Media Matters mobs bear a simple message: Renounce our enemies or become one of them. They distribute target lists of advertiser phone numbers, email addresses, Facebook links and Twitter handles, and then they come out of nowhere, en masse, against selected advertisers in rotation. They barrage small business with threats until they cancel their advertising." Glicklich says the Brock plan is hurting real businesses.
"By putting small business in the crosshairs of their war on expression, Media Matters is causing real harm. They are hurting these businesses, their employees and their families. As a business owner, imagine waking up one morning and being assaulted by hundreds of coordinated attacks from operatives who never were or will be your customers. If businesses give in to these demands, they lose access to the customers who helped build their company. Let?s be clear ? most advertisers aren?t making a political statement when they decide where to spend their money. Most chose varied programs to reach audiences with different points of view. When they buy talk radio advertising in general, or ?The Rush Limbaugh Show? in particular, they are reaching an audience, as well as creating jobs and supporting families. That?s all they want."

Waa waa waa! A conservative mouthpiece cries foul when the free market his philosophy idolizes punishes him and cries "censorship!" It is to laugh!

This is almost too easy, almost too comical to comment on, but I will anyway. Basically every charge Brian Glicklich made about Media Matters could be made against EIB. Come on guys. Really now. The only business that are hurt by advertisers turning away from Rush is EIB. Its a classic case of the pot calling the kettle black. It was quite humorous though. Thanks.

It will air for six weeks on SiriusXM Left. The show will be hosted by Ari Rabin-Havt, an executive at Media Matters, and Bradley Herring, an executive producer of the Media Matters Web site. They say they will analyze a ?cross section of print, broadcast, cable, radio and Internet media outlets? and alert listeners to ?take action? against misinformation, according to a news release.
