By comparison, Google took in over $50 billion in 2013, advertising spent on mobile is expected to be about $18 billion in 2014 and most estimates have radio industry revenue at about $17 billion.

BIA/Kelsey: Newspaper Worse Than Expected.

10-4-2012

BIA/Kelsey is revising its forecast for newspaper revenue down as newspapers continue to struggle to make the transition to a digital world. Where BIA/Kelsey initially expected a total decrease of -5% for the newspaper industry (print decrease of -6.6% and online increase of 6.0%), results in the newspaper industry so far this year has been more disappointing. It now expects a total decrease of -8.1% (print decrease of -10% and online increase of only 5.0%).

The update from BIA/Kelsey says, "With some high-profile newspapers cutting back on the number of days being published and the continued erosion of readership, the outlook for newspapers is proving exceptionally more challenging than expected. For the entire period of 2011 through 2016, BIA/Kelsey expects the compounded annual growth rate of all newspaper advertising to end up being -5.4% (-7.3% for print advertising and 4.6% for online advertising).

For 2013, BIA/Kelsey expects a -6.6 percent for print and an online increase of 5 percent. Collectively, print and online revenue will go down 4.9 percent.

Survival. Major Newspaper Shifting to Online

As consumers continue their lifestyle shift online and toward devices, newspapers continue to struggle to find a solution to their costly print publications. Some time this year, The New Orleans Times-Picayune will cut back it's printed edition to three days a week and eliminate jobs. When that happens, New Orleans will be the largest city without a daily newspaper.

Times-Picayune publisher Ashton Phelps Jr. confirmed the paper will cease daily publication, moving to three days a week in the fall: Wednesday, Friday and Sunday.  "Press reports have necessitated our giving you this news now. We realize it  will make people anxious, but we do not know enough today to be able to announce how the changes will affect individual employees. We will move as quickly as possible in the coming weeks to make that determination and to inform each of you personally."
The Times-Picayune announced on its site that a new company, NOLA Media Group, will run the newspaper and its website, and another new company will print and deliver the paper. It said NOLA Media Group ?will significantly increase its online news-gathering efforts 24 hours a day, seven days a week.?
