Is Beck in Trouble Over Bombing Comments?

The Boston Business Journal reports that Glenn Beck's attorney's requested that a federal judge dismiss a lawsuit alleging he incorrectly identified Abdulrahman Alharbi as the money source behind the Boston Marathon bombings in 2013. Beck says he's protected by the First Ammedment. Alharbi was seen on video near the bombing site which caught the attention of  investigators. He was later cleared of any wrongdoing. After the bombings, Beck called Alharbi a "bad, bad" person and identified the student as the moneyman behind the attacks. Alharbi filed a libel suit against Beck this spring.

CBS Dallas Sports Talker In Trouble

It appears longtime Dallas Sports Talker Chris Arnold (pictured) is in a bit of trouble after admitting on Twitter he stole large chunks of an article written by Scott Kacsmar which he posted on the "105.3 The Fan" website. Arnold was not on the air Monday and as far as we could tell he was not on today. CBS did not respond to e-mails for comment. Kacsmar's article was originally published at coldhardfootballfacts.com. Kacsmar sent Radio Ink the side-by-side comparison in a follow-up article he wrote called "How to Blatantly Plagiarize a NFL Article." He says he doesn't plan to pursue any legal action against Arnold at this time. If Arnold worked for you, what would you do?

Arnold is part of a three-person show called the G-Bag Nation that airs from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. in Dallas. CBS Radio in Dallas has not commented on the situation other than a report in the Dallas Morning News that the station is investigating. There was an exchange on Twitter between Arnold and Kacsmar that as of late last night was still up on Arnold's Twitter page. Arnold apologizes after being called out by Kacsmar. (DIGITAL) Avoid Legal Trouble And Get More Done

I worked for CBS several years ago. I know just how hard they try to avoid legal trouble. So I can only imagine the [expletive deleted] storm that occurred internally, leading up to the $10K fine that the FCC levied on CBS?s Urban AC in Charlotte, WBAV. You can read broadcast attorney David Oxenford's analysis of the situation for Radio Ink here.

This news is certainly being circulated to radio staffs all over the country with the instructions to be extra-careful that we do what we say we?ll do when we run contests. Instead of adding to anyone?s workload, here?s how you can use your digital tools to simplify your workday when it comes to special content and events that you?re promoting on all your different platforms.

RULES POSTED ONLINE ARE THE ONLY RULES

Once you post the copy of your contest rules, make that the only copy you work with. If you have a special Web page for the contest (and you should), link to the rules from it. Produce the rules promo for on-air from the online rules, and make sure everyone who might need them has a link. That means don?t circulate a different document with the rules once they?re posted. Consider the rules at the website the only real rules.

WRITE LESS, LINK MORE IN EMAIL

WBAV got in trouble because the contest dates in email, on the website, and on-air didn?t all line up together. Let?s solve the email part right now: send out less-wordy emails. For the ?Carolina Cuties? contest that resulted in a fine, all you would say in your email is, ?Do you have Charlotte?s cutest baby? You could win blah-blah-blah and show off your kid on v1019.com. Learn how to enter and win ?Carolina Cuties? here.? The word ?here? is a link back to the special Web page you?ve already created for this contest. That Web page shows what you can win and how to enter, and has a link to the official rules. You?re centralizing the information, which means less of a chance of someone freelancing on important details.

By the way, a huge benefit of writing less and linking more in your email is that people then tend to open them up and read them more often!

WEEKLY FOCUS MEETING

I know, the last thing you want is another meeting. But this one will actually save you time throughout the week.
Hold a weekly half-hour focus meeting for those, and only those, who are your key content providers. Those are the people who really impact what happens on the air, on your website, and in social media. Keep the list as small, yet inclusive, as you can. Then, each week, run through the major topics you?re going to focus on in the coming week: contests, concerts, appearances, special programming, key personality show bits, whatever. Talk about how they fit together: ?We?ll announce this contest on Facebook and in email a day before we start promoting it on the air on Thursday. That means the Web page needs to be ready Tuesday morning so we can see it, and the promos need to be done by Wednesday. I?m writing the copy and I?ll have it to you later today.? Brainstorm, coordinate, and prioritize. It?s project management for all your content platforms, and this will focus everyone?s to-do list for the week, leading to less confusion and fewer sloppy mistakes all around.

KTRH Houston Talker Could Be In Trouble

A Houston man has told police that conservative KTRH talker and former City Councilman Michael Berry rammed his SUV into another car outside the bar T.C.'s Show Baron Converse on January 31st. Click2Houston.com is reporting that Tuderia Bennett told Houston police that he was working as a bouncer at the front door and watched the crash happen. He told police he rushed up to the car after impact and got a good look at Berry behind the wheel. Security camera footage has been viewed of the crash. Bennett told police 'That's definitely the guy.'  For sure, 100 percent."

Bennett wrote down the license number from the car that he said caused more than $1,500 in damage to his car.  Then, when HPD officers traced that license tag to Berry, the victim said he had no doubt it was him. He said he did not know who Berry was until HPD officers told him and he viewed an online promotional photo of Berry.

Click2Houston.com reports that HPD investigators issued an internal "Significant Event Form" to notify department leaders of the former city councilman's involvement in the hit-and-run. The HPD accident report states that the SUV headed in reverse for about 70 feet on the street before colliding with the car and leaving the scene. HPD officers involved in the investigation said that the Harris County District Attorney's office has declined to file criminal hit and run charges in the case, telling officers that no one can positively identify Berry being behind the wheel for the crime. Bennett said "I'd say that's the government at work.  I mean, that's corruption at its best."

The victim told Local 2 Investigates he believes the conservative activist is trying to avoid the issue entirely because of his public stances involving gay people. "If you're going to stand up and say anti-gay things and be conservative and be Mr. Good Guy, and then when something happens that points you out and puts you in a place with the exact business that you aim to shut down, it kind of makes it seem like I need this to go away and I need it to go away quickly," said Bennett.
