Smulyan: Alden Claimed 'Big Interest In The Industry'

Emmis Communications Chairman/CEO Jeff Smulyan is quoted in a New York Times article on Randall, Smith the principal of Alden Global Capital -- now being sued by Smulyan over backing away from an agreement to finance a now-defunct go-private plan for Emmis. Smulyan told the paper Alden "said they had a big interest in the [media] industry."

The Dial Global-syndicated Thom Hartmann Program heads east, as Hartmann is set to begin broadcasting from Washington, DC, next week. The show has been airing from Portland, OR.

Canadian Contest Goes Really Wrong

A contest by Canada's K-Rock 10 on Prince Edward Island led to listeners causing havoc in a local store after the station gave "half price" and "steaks" as clues in a $10,000 contest to find the "missing 5.5" for K-Rock 10, which is heard at 105.5 FM. The station has now made clear that Half Price Steaks is not part of its contest.

Bill Mayne of Country Radio Broadcasters is elected chairman of the Academy of Country Music for the 2010-2011 term. Great American Country’s Sara Trahern is president.

Radio One Gets Delisting Notice

Radio One has been told by Nasdaq that its class D common stock is in danger of delisting. The stock has closed below the $1 minimum share price for more than 30 consecutive business days. Radio One has until mid-March to get back in compliance.

Media Monitors Gets Political

Media Monitors reports on political spending for the week of September 15-21, saying there have been some "amazing changes." In California, Democratic candidate for governor Jerry Brown had 2,318 radio spots on the air (his own campaign's and ads endorsing him by the Peace Officer's Research Association), compared to Republican candidate Meg Whitman's 3,012.
