Radio Show Day One Closes With Execs Talking Rates, Deals

Dickstein Shapiro's Lew Paper moderated the closing panel on the first day of the NAB-RAB Radio Show, talking with Cumulus Media Chairman/CEO Lew Dickey, Entercom President/CEO David Field, NRG Media President/CEO Mary Quass, and Cherry Creek Radio President/CEO Joe Schwartz. Among the topics under discussion: Loans and equity for radio, station deals, and pricing problems. Dickey and Field agreed that more consolidation would be good for the industry; Dickey said he thinks radio would "improve dramatically with more consolidation," and doesn't need an FCC rules change to do it.

Haley's Upbeat, Smith Talks Chips

RAB President/CEO Jeff Haley (right) and NAB President/CEO Gordon Smith took a similar tone in their remarks opening the first joint RAB-NAB-hosted Radio Show, with both positive about the future and citing some of the same stats. Haley said it's been "an amazing week, and we're just getting started with the Radio Show." Smith focused on the push to require an FM chip in mobile phones, separating the chip initiative from the performance royalties proposals put forth by the NAB over the summer. Smith said, "Beyond our advocacy efforts on the Performance Rights Act, it's clear that ensuring broadcast radio is available in mobile phones is important to America's public safety."

Radio Show: Radio's Place In Media Mix Modeling

At a Wednesday-afternoon panel at the Radio Show, Jim Spaeth and Alice Sylvester of Sequent Partners explained what radio needs to do to become a more effective part of Media Mix Modeling, which Sylvester noted is a "wildly popular" method of allocating advertising dollars. The key: Making sure radio data is provided quickly to modelers, in the most effective available forms.

The annual Radio Wayne Awards, for excellence in sales and management, are set to be presented today at the Advertiser Keynote and Luncheon at the Radio Show in Washington, DC. The finalists appeared in the September 20 issue of Radio Ink.

A federal appeals court on Tuesday said that a lower court's 2008 decision to set a 2.5% streaming royalty rate for songwriters repped by ASCAP was "unreasonable" and "imprecise" and has ordered the lower court to formulate a new method for calculation.
