Radio Show Opens Today

The first joint NAB-RAB Radio Show opens today in Washington, DC. The show, continuing through Friday, is radio's premier gathering for sales, programming, and just about every aspect of the industry. Opening day will include sessions on tech, sales, digital, and more, and addresses from NAB chief Gordon Smith and RAB top exec Jeff Haley.

CEA: Americans Don't Want Required FM In Cellphones

The Consumer Electronics Association has commissioned a poll that, says the CEA, found that 70 percent of cellphone and smartphone owners aren't interested in receiving FM on the phone, and 80 percent oppose a government requirement that the FM chips be included. The NAB responds by standing behind its own, earlier poll which found that most consumers like the idea of FM in a phone, with 66 percent of adults saying they'd use a radio if their phones had it.

On the eve of the Radio Show, the NAB launches a new consumer-oriented website to promote radio-capable mobile phones, at RadioRocksMyPhone.com. The site talks about the potential benefits of an FM chip in phones disputes cellphone maker and carrier claims about lack of demand and the expense of adding FM.

Mediator Endorses Tribune Settlement

Tribune Co. has come to an agreement with major creditors Oaktree Capital Management and Angelo, Gordon & Co. that will settle claims surrounding "Step 1" of Tribune's 2007 going-private deal -- claims that were judged to have less than a 50/50 chance of success. The claims related to "Step 2" of the transaction will go into a litigation trust. The settlement plan was overseen and is endorsed by the court-appointed mediator in the case, and may finally mean an end to Tribune's nearly 2-year-old Chapter 11 proceedings.

Ford is launching a digital marketing campaign by way of Pandora, with artists Jewel and John Legend. The campaign, said Ford, "represents a transition in Ford's digital advertising strategy, focus on on working with digital content creators upstream."

BIA/Kelsey: U.S. Mobile Revs Will Exceed $2B In 2014

BIA/Kelsey projects that U.S. mobile local advertising revenues will increase from $213 million in 2009 to $2.02 billion in 2014, representing a compound annual growth rate of 56.9 percent. That adds up to 1.4 percent of local media in 2014, up from just 0.2 percent last year. Smartphone penetration and mobile Web usage are helping drive the increase.

Global Security Systems signs up Educational Media Foundation's K-Love and Air1 radio stations to implement Alert FM. The rollout will double the number of stations using the FM-based alerting and messaging system.

Coleman: Streaming Is 'Underdeveloped'

Coleman Insights' "Successful Audio Streaming Strategy" study found that the only audio streams with "meaningful awareness levels" are those offered by broadcasters -- and Pandora. Says Coleman, "The low awareness levels and shallow perception found in the research lead Coleman Insights to conclude that streaming audio is a brand category that remains highly underdeveloped." Coleman presented the study at RAIN Summit East in DC.

HD Adds 'Artist Experience' Visuals

iBiquity Digital debuts new advanced service "Artist Experience," with the first devices due in stores next month. The new receivers can show album cover art, along with images related to the songs being played and to station promotions, and they let stations display ads synced to audio spots.
