More evidence for the radio industry that a permanent spot on the cellphone is vital. According to a new report by comScore and Jumptap, over half the time we spend online is done through a mobile device. Of the 51% of online time spent mobile, nearly 40% of it is done on a smartphone, 12% on a tablet. Time spent mobile has nearly doubled, going from 4,500 minutes in 2010 to nearly 9,000 minutes in 2013. 18-24 year olds have increased their monthly smartphone usage the most, jumping 40% in less than one year. According to the report, women 25-49, are most likely to be mobile-only users. Men men 25-49 are the biggest cross-platform users (74%). And, this number, may be the most important to radio. 77% of music streaming is now done off the smartphone.

To echo Bob's comments- radio's current product isn't competitive on mobile and it doesn't matter if it is streamed, simulcasted, or using the Next Radio app. Anyone who thinks they are going to "win" an audience with 4x the number of commercials (or more) is kidding themselves.
It is time to look at things differently and stop pretending that somehow things can just continue the way they always have been.
AM/FM radio is delusional if owners think that putting stations on mobile phones is going to change listening trends. It won't for two reasons. First, AM/FM is already available in cars! And listeners are opting for mobile phone streaming instead. Secondly, under 40 year olds are not going to tolerate all the commercials on FM, when there are much less, if any, on pure internet products. These are just logical, obvious conclusions.
