GM Case Study: Is Dan McNeil Being Ungrateful?

7-1-14

Business is business, everyone understands that. As a manager how far would you let this one go before you made a new hire? WSCR's Dan McNeil is now in his 8th week off the air in what everyone in Chicago believes is a contract dispute with the CBS station. Chicago media writer Robert Feder says McNeil - who does middays on the sports talker - wants a raise from $300,000 to $500,000 (yes - those numbers are correct) and he wants to be moved to afternoon drive. You may recall, back in December McNeil returned to WSCR after going AWOL from his shift for awhile. That vacation had nothing to do with money.

When McNeil returned his explanation was that he turned back to drugs, the host has had personal issue he's had to deal with before. "I returned to a lifestyle of daily weed and pain medication. I got lazy, stopped going to meetings and contacting my sponsor. I'm an addict." When he was ready, the station welcomed him back. This is the thanks they get.

For the most part, McNeil has been posting pictures of his yard on his Facebook page, however, yesterday he did post this note. "I'm sorry I don't have any real news on my future at the Score. We're still talking, but the game is in the fourth quarter. Sincerest thanks to all who've expressed they miss me. Hang tight. I'm not done world shakin' just yet." CBS Chicago Market Manager Rod Zimmerman and PD Mitch Rosen have to be fuming over McNeil's latest stunt after allowing him back when he bailed on them in late 2013. All Zimmerman would say to Feder was the two sides were still talking and he expects to have the matter resolved in the next week or so.

If you were the GM, would you put up with this?
