Latest Borrell Report Reveals Fascinating Digital Facts About Radio

5-29-13

Digital revenue is all the rage. In the first quarter of 2013, according to the RAB, radio's digital revenue jumped 9 percent to $179 million. We see the record Pandora revenue numbers every quarter and we know there is money to be made in mobile...just ask Emmis CEO Jeff Smulyan. So, how much of an effort is the radio industry putting into grabbing that digital dollar?

Borell and Associates Senior Research Analyst Greg Harmon released his third report in a series examining how media hires and pays digital account execuitives. According to the study, 11 percent of radio stations have dedicated digital sellers, compared to 44 percent in TV and 57 percent in newspaper. The average starting salary of a digital AE in radio is $32,200 according to the Borrell study. Newspaper pays an average salary of $34,458. Television $42,250. And a Pureplay Internet company pays $54,100. (All are before bonuses and commissions.)

The Borrell study reveals that when a company has a dedicated digital seller, it will average twice the online revenue of those without digital reps. That's because the sales staff exhibits a greater ability to consult with and educate advertisers and has stronger capabilities to understand and sell digital products. But not everyone wants to be part of this digital revenue shift. One radio manager is quoted in the survey saying, ?We should be focusing on our strength, audio advertising, not selling our clients the pipe dream of ?interactivity? that digital has promised but seldom delivers.? It?s a minority opinion, but certainly represents a sibling rivalry occurring in local media families where the cute digital brother gets all the attention."

Hiring digital sales reps is on the upswing again. The first Borrell study in 2009 revealed that 60 percent of respondents had at least one rep whose sole focus was digital products. By 2011, the recession had cut that figure to 46 percent. This latest survey shows 62 percent of sales managers in newspapers, radio, TV, and yellow pages companies reporting that they employ digital-only reps.

The Borrell report examines responses from 220 media managers in the pureplay, newspaper, radio, TV, and directory industries. One-third were from newspaper companies, 56 percent from broadcasting, 12 percent from yellow pages, and 4 percent from Internet pureplays. It includes more than 200 open-ended responses from those managers offering insights and suggestions on digital vs. traditional sales compensation plans.

You have to forgive the sales manager. He has spent his career doing marketing the real way by building brands through a powerful medium that probably reaches tens of thousands of people in his market simultaneously. A medium that can make a clients business thought of first and liked the best. Now, he is asked to talk to businesses about how they can get 50 likes on their Facebook page. What does truly building a client's business have to do with that? That's "old school".

ProFlowers Latest 7th Advertiser to Drop Rush

3-3-2012

ProFlowers became the 7th company to pull its ads from The Rush Limbaugh Program. Social Media has played yet another role in how consumers give and take information. ProFlowers customers were giving the company instant feedback about what Rush said and their choice to advertise on his program. And, the company responded Sunday by ending its relationship with Rush and did it by posting a statement on Facebook. Here is what they posted...

"At ProFlowers, our mission is to delight our customers with fresh and long lasting flowers, and that is our singular focus each and every day. We do not base our advertising decisions to align with any particular political view or opinion as our employees and customers are as diverse as the USA. Mr. Limbaugh?s recent comments went beyond political discourse to a personal attack and do not reflect our values as a company. As such, ProFlowers has suspended advertising on The Rush Limbaugh radio program."

Spitzer's Latest Big Name to Keynote Forecast 2012

Former New York State Attorney General and Governor Eliot Spitzer will highlight an exclusive keynote presentation at Forecast 2012. Forecast is set for December 6, 2011 at the Harvard Club in New York. During a groundbreaking eight-year run as attorney general of New York State, Spitzer's crusade against Wall Street corruption led the Financial Times to name him Man of the Year.

A lightning rod for controversy and criticism, Spitzer went after more than just Wall Street: He took aim at the radio and record industries, leading an FCC investigation into alleged payola practices that resulted in four radio broadcasters paying a combined $12.5 million in settlements.

Spitzer's no-nonsense, whistle-blowing career took him from the Manhattan DA's office all the way to the governor's mansion in Albany. He'll draw upon his extensive political background to discuss the current state of the financial sector, the Occupy Wall Street movement, and his take on what to expect in the 2012 elections and beyond. Who will seize power? How will government regulate business, and what will it mean for media? Award-winning Dial Global-syndicated host and interviewer Michael Smerconish will conduct a one-on-one interview with Spitzer in a unique and candid opening keynote.

"Though controversial, we're confident that Eliot Spitzer will shed some strong light on the Wall Street accountability issues and its impact on the elections," says Radio Ink Publisher Eric Rhoads. "Especially now that the Occupy Wall Street movement is gathering steam. We'll hear his candid, off-camera comments and his unique insights into the inner workings of politics."

Forecast 2012 is closed to the working press, and sessions will not be recorded. The only way to learn and absorb all the information delivered at Forecast 2012 is to attend. There are only 200 seats available, so early registration is encouraged.

Forecast is Radio Ink's eagerly anticipated annual radio industry financial conference -- the only one of its kind. Radio owners, CEOs, CFOs, group executives, managers and Wall Street analysts gather to discuss the state of the radio industry and predictions for the coming year. Participants hear about current and upcoming trends and opportunities, and meet the trendsetters of tomorrow.

If the trend continues Randy Michaels will make another staff announcement today as he has every day since the launch of his new company Merlin Media was announced. Yesterday, Jerry Rohira was added as Vice President for Production for Merlin.  Michaels recently agreed to buy Emmis' WKQX and WLUP in Chicago and WRXP in New York. Rohira was most recently creative director at Sirius XM. There is still no official word yet on what will happen to Emmis employees when Merlin starts running the three stations.

"Jerry will be responsible for creating the highest level of innovative production that exists in American media," Merlin COO Walter Sabo said. "The overall sound, philosophy, and imagery of Merlin stations in all formats will benefit from his soundscapes."
